Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? A Guide to the Use of Option 2 |
NJDOE
As of June 2009, N.J.A.C. 6A:8-5.1(a) 2 required schools districts to develop a policy that enables students to engage in educational experiences that serve as an alternative to traditional instruction. These experiences, known as Option Two, are meant to be meaningful learning opportunities that support student achievement of local curricular goals as well as the Core Curriculum Content Standards. Option Two is not an exemption or "opt-out" but an alternative opportunity for students to attain credits for high school graduation. Option Two opportunities should meet or exceed local district-approved curricula aligned to the Core Curriculum Content Standards.
The link below includes a guide to the use of Option Two policy development and implementation.

CPR/AED Training mandatory in NJ Public Schools |
Article Subheading
CPR INSTRUCTION
On August 20, 2014, P.L. 2014, c.36 was signed into law requiring public school districts serving students in grades 9-12 to provide instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillation (AED). This instruction must be provided prior to graduation as part of the implementation of the current 2009 New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. This law should not represent a new requirement for any high school district with a curriculum aligned to the 2009 NJCCCS for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. Boards of Education or Boards of Trustees may select a no-cost, non-certification instructional program to meet the requirement.

A small school making a big difference in the fight against cardiovascular diseases |
The Huffington Post
French Road Elementary School has become the epicenter of the Jump Rope For Heart universe - a small school using this fundraiser to make a big difference in the fight against cardiovascular diseases. Folks in this community have been doing it since the 1980s, long enough that children who once jumped are now watching their children jump. While French Road's fundraising totals are amazing, what makes their story so powerful is the way the event has become part of the framework for the school year. From planning the three-day extravaganza to the ongoing lessons of what it means to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle, Jump Rope For Heart is a regular part of the daily school routine. "The common way to describe our event is that success is breeding success," said SHAPE America member Rick LaPaglia, a physical education teacher in his 23rd year of overseeing French Road's Jump Rope For Heart program. High school PE: Going on offense to improve programs and prevent loss |

Writes Charles B. "Chuck" Corbin: Recently, I was asked to participate in a college class activity in which students "defended physical education" before a simulated school board. I, along with several others, served as "board members" for this activity. The activity was realistic because we in physical education often find ourselves on the defensive. MORE

Physical Activity Tips |
MVPA
Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) refers to the intensity level of an activity. MVPA produces large increases in breathing or heart rate, such as jogging, aerobic dance, or bicycling uphill. Most traditional physical education classes yield between 10-40 percent of class time in MVPA. However, current recommendations are for students to spend at least 50 percent of physical education class time in MVPA. Check out these teaching strategies to ramp up MVPA:
- Start all physical education classes with an instant activity
- Focus on individual or small group activities
- Put a new spin on existing activities
- Get students moving during roll call
- Increase motivation with small physical activity challenges during class

New Online Fundraising Tool
Raising money online for the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events! MORE

FREE: Share the keys program facilitator training |
Kean University and NJDHTS
Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety developed a parent/teen safe driving orientation called Share the Keys (STK). STK is a research based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.
Share the Keys is presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and is approximately 90 minutes in length. STK is offered both as voluntary and mandated programs linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. STK is designed ideally for parents and their teens during the pre-permit or permit stage of licensure. However, parents and young drivers already holding a probationary license will also benefit. The program includes a resource guide full of user friendly practical information and tools that support safe driving practices.

NJ's Teen Safe Driving peer-to-peer program |
Application Deadline: November 14th
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is hosting its 5th Annual U Got Brains Champion Schools Program - a contest to challenge New Jersey high school students and a faculty advisor to create a unique project aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving. All schools will receive a stipend to help implement their campaign. This year, three driving simulators and other prizes will be awarded. Deadline to apply is November 14th. Apply here
NEW THIS YEAR! Advisors will receive up to 3 professional development hours for participating in the Champion Schools Program Here's how it works: Develop an idea in your school for a project related to teen driving safety based on the key safety issues provided. Submit your project name and a short summary of the proposed project. If your school's project is selected, you will receive a stipend to implement it. Selected schools will have several months to implement their projects and receive ongoing technical support. Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen injuries and death and you have the power to help change that. This is a great opportunity to engage your students in an educational, fun and interactive competition, while addressing an important safety issue. To quote a teacher advisor who has participated in this program for three straight years, "In 25 years of teaching, this is the best program I've ever been involved in!". We are looking for creative campaign ideas that will draw attention and make an impact on new drivers. Learn more and Apply today! Please email Wendy Berk or call her at 732-972-3451 with questions.
