A message from your president |

Thank you to all of you who have advocated for NJAHPERD's Assembly Bill No. 3256. The Bill requires teachers of health and physical education in grades kindergarten through six in public schools to possess the appropriate endorsement to the instructional certificate, and includes a "grandfather" provision. Recently, Assemblywoman Mila M. Jasey (D 18) of South Orange-Maplewood signed on as a co-sponsor. The more support the bill receives, the faster it will be moved. Let your voice be heard! Make the phone call or send an email to your local Assembly district office in support of the bill. Go one step further and ask your local State Senator to support and co-sponsor Peter J. Barnes, III (D18), Bill S2245 so that once it moves through the Assembly we will have strong support in the Senate as well. You can find your Legislator's name and contact information HERE.
Advocacy in support of school health and physical education is vital to the future of our profession as well as to the millions of school age children across the country. We can make an even greater impact at the Federal level. Please plan ahead and join me in attending SPEAK Out! Day, February 10-11, 2015. SPEAK Out! Day is SHAPE America's annual member lobby event in Washington, DC. Join your NJ colleagues and meet members of Congress and "speak out" in support of school health and physical education. Our MAJOR Legislative ASKS for 2015:
-
Co sponsor the PHYSICAL ACT - designate health and physical education as core subjects in federal education law
-
Support PEP grant funding - the only federal education funding for physical education which New Jersey has benefited from in the past.
Schedule: On Tuesday, February 10, 2015 - Prep Day (Mandatory) at Crowne Plaza, Old Town Alexandria, 4:00-6:00 PM, for an in-depth Issue briefing. On Wednesday, February 11, 2015, - SPEAK Out! Day, NJAHPERD travels to DC by car for our assigned Congressional meetings (9:00-3:00 PM) and then head home. SHAPE America will be offering individual travel scholarships of $150.00. If you are interested in attending, contact the NJAHPERD office
NJAHPERD will car pool to Alexandria. Cost to our members will be at a minimum. Last year, we had six members attend including 3 Future Professionals who made a big impact! We would like to double that number to reach more Congressmen. The more voices, the greater the impact! Advocacy Moving Forward will only happen with your help!
Thank you and enjoy the rest of the beautiful Fall season.
Best wishes,
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD President

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

The researchers recruited 40 8-to-10-year-old boys and girls, half of whom had ADHD. All the kids took a series of computerized academic and attentional tests. Later, on one occasion they sat and read quietly for 20 minutes. MORE

Managing Halloween Candy Tips |
Nourishinteractive.com
Follow these simple tips to keep your child healthy and the treats under control.
- Halloween treats show up in the stores late September. The first thing is to not fall into the marketing trap and get tempted to buy candy early, that includes the grocery line where kids will get tempted with all sorts of Halloween promotions. Buying candy too early makes it way too tempting to get into the stash before trick-or-treating even starts. Buy your candy a couple of days before Halloween.
- Set expectations early. Prepare your child the day before Halloween. Talk about how much fun it will be to go trick-or-treating but not so much fun for their body if they eat a lot of candy. It is important for kids to learn that candy is a treat that should be eaten in small doses. They can spread their candy over many days, by dividing it up. Help your child see the benefit of making Halloween treats last longer.
- Determine a reasonable number of days to enjoy the candy. Five days is a good goal. Most children will get way more candy than needed, even when they divide it up.
- Agree upon when the candy treat will be eaten. This helps your child learn that candy can be an occasional part of a healthy meal plan. You don't want to teach your child to eat candy every day, since it is a once in a while treat.
- Discuss candy-eating rules with your child before they go out trick-or-treating. Children should not eat candy until they have come home and allowed you to inspect all the candy. This is a good rule that is part of safe Halloween. Look at the wrapping carefully for a tight seal and toss out anything that looks suspicious.
- It is best to feed your child dinner or a healthy snack such as a peanut butter sandwich and a piece of fresh fruit before going trick-or-treating. They will be less tempted to dig into their bag before they get home.
- Have your child actively participate in dividing up their candy and making little treat bags they can enjoy, one each day. This gets the child involved in the decision-making and helps them feel ownership of the process. Keep it fun! you can take advantage of the candy by playing games. For example, have your child count all of the chocolate bars or separate the candy into groups all the M&M's in one pile, all the Skittles in another, and so on
- Using mini-sized bags, help your child pick and choose a couple of pieces of their favorite candy to place in each baggie. This helps them learn portion control, a very important part of healthy eating.
- Store the extra baggies of candy in a cabinet out of reach. It is best not to store the candy in their room to help them avoid temptation.
This Halloween plan for a healthy season that helps your child learn about healthy choices while forming a positive association with nutrition. Have a happy Halloween and watch out for all the witches, ghosts and goblins!

New Online Fundraising Tool
Raising money online for the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events! MORE

FREE: Share the keys program facilitator training |
November 14, 2014
Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety developed a parent/teen safe driving orientation called Share the Keys (STK). STK is a research based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.
Share the Keys is presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and is approximately 90 minutes in length. STK is offered both as voluntary and mandated programs linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. STK is designed ideally for parents and their teens during the pre-permit or permit stage of licensure. However, parents and young drivers already holding a probationary license will also benefit. The program includes a resource guide full of user friendly practical information and tools that support safe driving practices. MORE |
NJ's Teen Safe Driving peer-to-peer program |
Application Deadline: November 14th
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is hosting its 5th Annual U Got Brains Champion Schools Program - a contest to challenge New Jersey high school students and a faculty advisor to create a unique project aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving. All schools will receive a stipend to help implement their campaign. This year, three driving simulators and other prizes will be awarded. Deadline to apply is November 14th. Apply here
NEW THIS YEAR! Advisors will receive up to 3 professional development hours for participating in the Champion Schools Program Here's how it works: Develop an idea in your school for a project related to teen driving safety based on the key safety issues provided. Submit your project name and a short summary of the proposed project. If your school's project is selected, you will receive a stipend to implement it. Selected schools will have several months to implement their projects and receive ongoing technical support. Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen injuries and death and you have the power to help change that. This is a great opportunity to engage your students in an educational, fun and interactive competition, while addressing an important safety issue. To quote a teacher advisor who has participated in this program for three straight years, "In 25 years of teaching, this is the best program I've ever been involved in!". We are looking for creative campaign ideas that will draw attention and make an impact on new drivers. Learn more and Apply today! Please email Wendy Berk or call her at 732-972-3451 with questions. Working roadside is a dangerous and sometimes deadly job. That's why when motorists see flashing lights on the side of the road, they're required to slow down and if it's safe, move over -- away from police, fire crews, paramedics, tow truck drivers, and DOT workers. The M.A.R.C. campaign, founded in memory of New Jersey State Trooper Marc Castellano who was struck and killed in 2010 while conducting a criminal investigation on the shoulder of I-195 by an individual who failed to adhere to New Jersey's Move Over Law, provides in school presentations to ensure all new drivers know and adhere to this lifesaving provision.
