EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

My fellow colleagues, "ADVOCACY is Moving Forward!" On Thursday, September 11th, NJAHPERD's Assembly Bill A3256 was heard by the Assembly Education Committee. Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan (D18) Committee Chair and Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin (D18) were sponsors. The bill "requires teachers of health and physical education in grades kindergarten through six in public schools to possess the appropriate endorsement to the instructional certificate, and includes a "grandfather" provision".  In other words, only certified health and/or physical education teachers/specialists should teach health and/or physical education. As President, I gave support testimony for bill A3256 during the hearing. The bill passed unanimously with 10-0-0 vote. NJAHPERD Testimony

The bill was supported by NJ Council of Administrators of Health and Physical Education, American Heart Association, NJ YMCA State Alliance, NJ Principals and Supervisors Association, SHAPE America, and NJEA. All gave written testimony and we are grateful for their support. NJAHPERD's legislative consultant was instrumental in providing us guidance.

I would like to thank Jackie Malaska, Executive Director, for putting all the material together to write NJAHPERD's testimony and for contacting all of our partners for support. Thanks also to Dr. James McCall, Advocacy Chair, and committee members for their input in the process. Our dedicated volunteers are critical to our success! And so are YOU!

So that the bill continues to move forward, we need your help! Now is the time for you to advocate to move our bill A3256 out of a possible 2nd Assembly hearing and directly to the Assembly floor for a vote. Here's what you can do:

  1. If you live in District 18 (Middlesex) email/call Assemblyman Diegnan and Assemblywoman Pinkin to thank them for sponsoring the bill and then urge them to move the bill to the full floor of the Assembly for a vote.

  2. All members can contact the Assembly Speaker, Vincent Prieto (D-32), and urge him to move A3256 to the Assembly floor for a vote.

  3. Contact your local District offices and urge your Assemblymen/women to move our bill right to the Assembly floor for a vote, Find your legislator HERE.

If you stand up for Advocacy, now, you will be standing up for quality Health and Physical Education programs in all our schools. I am confident that I can count on all of you to let your voice be heard. NJAHPERD has laid the groundwork and now it's your turn to advocate for the benefit of our students here in New Jersey. Thank you for taking that extra step to ensure our children receive a quality health and physical education program in every grade.

Best wishes,

JoAnn Doherty

Request for Applications for the 2015 ShapingNJ Healthy Community Grants
NJDOH
The NJ Department of Health will be releasing a Request for Applications for the 2015 ShapingNJ Healthy Community Grants on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the 5th Leaders' Academy for Healthy Community Development, a bi-annual event co-sponsored by the NJ Department of Health with the NJ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.  Held at the Robert Wood Johnson Fitness and Wellness Center in Hamilton, this event will feature expert speakers, highlight success stories from recent grantees and also serve as the bidders conference for this new funding opportunity.

The ShapingNJ Healthy Community Grants initiative funds communities with small grants (approximately $10,000) for policy and environmental work at the local level - to improve access to healthy food and increase opportunities for routine, daily physical activity and thus, prevent/reduce obesity. To see some of the current efforts taking place throughout NJ, go to ShapingNJ.Wordpress.com.

Eligible applicants may include New Jersey public and private nonprofit entities such as municipalities, parks and recreation programs, schools/districts, local health departments, hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, YW-YMCA's and other community based organizations capable of carrying out the work.

Although community teams are not required to attend the 5th Leaders'
Academy for Healthy Community Development skill building workshop on October 24, 2014, additional points will be awarded on the application for attendance (at least three members must be in attendance to be awarded additional points). Community teams may include local health departments, policy and decision making agencies, private voluntary agencies, local advocates, faith based-organizations and other community stakeholders.

If you meet the criteria above and would like to attend on October 24, 2014, please RSVP to Pamela Howard at (609) 292-2209 or electronically to pamela.howard@doh.state.nj.us including all names of team members and contact information (email, organization, phone number). Do you hear groans and moans when you announce it's time to dance? Are you feeling a little rhythmically challenged yourself? And who better to present these innovative ideas and successful strategies than the 2014 SHAPE America National Dance Teacher of the Year! Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education

ARCHIVED

Cost: Free

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

Framework for Physical Activity and Physical Education & Resources to Support Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs
Can physical education make children smarter?
The University of Texas
"Sit still and pay attention." It has been a common refrain in classrooms for years, and for a long time, there was nothing wrong with that. These days, however, physical education programs are routinely being slashed by ever tightening school budgets. As a result, sitting still may be doing more harm than good to children's physical and cognitive health.

In response to this trend, University of Texas researchers, led by Darla Castelli, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education and a top national expert on physical education, are studying children's physical activity and its effects on cognitive health, brain health, behavior and academic performance. Getting back in the game after a concussion
dailyRx
While a concussion is often considered a relatively minor brain injury and is somewhat common in athletes, it's still important to take the time needed to fully recover before returning to play. A recent study found that athletes recovering from a concussion had a regression in physical ability and brain function after returning to play. MORE
Rethinking PE class
Athletic Business
Not every kid likes to play sports. For the athletically disinclined, a game of gym class dodgeball or basketball can be an anxiety-inducing experience. In fact, a recent study by researchers at Brigham Young University found that kids who were ridiculed in gym class (by peers and teachers) were less likely to engage in physical activity one year later - not good news for a nation facing an obesity and sedentary-lifestyle epidemic. MORE
Put the 'physical' in education
The New York Times
When confronted with an overly active child, many exasperated teachers and parents respond the same way: "Sit still!" It might be more effective, though, to encourage the child to run. Recent research suggests that even small amounts of exercise enable children to improve their focus and academic performance. MORE
The role and value of dance in education
Dance Plus
The inclusion in statutory learning frameworks of any subject depends on the contribution it offers to the educational experience. It is believed that dance has enormous potential for enabling students to develop many skills that are fundamentally important to life, such as problem-solving, creativity, critical, expressive and communication skills. It also evidently has physical benefits such as supporting the development of children's balance, coordination, motor skills, etc., and can play a positive role in promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles. Never heard of FitnessGram? It's only the "gold standard" of fitness testing for kids
The Post and Courier
FitnessGram sounds like a new app for your phone or tablet or some play on Instagram.

But long before apps became the craze they are today, FitnessGram was helping physical educators assess the health and fitness of school children and, as attention has turned, to battling the childhood obesity epidemic.

Developed by The Cooper Institute of Dallas more than 30 years ago, FitnessGram is an assessment of fitness related to health, not athletics. The tests typically are taken at the beginning and end of every school year to measure progress. MORE

Lack of sleep not only puts teens at risk for poor grades, it also puts them at increased risk for obesity, researchers warn. The study authors analyzed data collected from more than 10,000 Americans when they were aged 16 and 21. Nearly one-fifth of them got less than six hours of sleep a night when they were age 16, and this group was 20 percent more likely to be obese at age 21 than those who got more than eight hours of sleep per night at age 16, the investigators found. 2. Help students refocus or "freeze" quickly using a signal or sign when you need to speak or end an activity. Grab their attention with a music trick to start and end an activity.
  3. Get students moving using LMAS Fitness Trail Cards in the classroom in a station format.

New Online Fundraising Tool

Raising money online for  the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events! Working roadside is a dangerous and sometimes deadly job. That's why when motorists see flashing lights on the side of the road, they're required to slow down and if it's safe, move over -- away from police, fire crews, paramedics, tow truck drivers, and DOT workers.

The M.A.R.C. campaign, founded in memory of New Jersey State Trooper Marc Castellano who was struck and killed in 2010 while conducting a criminal investigation on the shoulder of I-195 by an individual who failed to adhere to New Jersey's Move Over Law, provides in school presentations to ensure all new drivers know and adhere to this lifesaving provision.
