In case you missed my August 15th message, here is the updated SGO information from the NJDOE.
- How Teachers Develop SGOs powerpoint. I recommend that you review so that you are clear with the expectations.
- The State Board also made it easier for teachers to appeal those scores. Under the new process, a teacher can get a review if his/her SGO score causes a rating to drop to "ineffective" or "partially effective". The scores can be adjusted by a chief school administrator or the commissioner if the appeal is unsuccessful.
Please contact NJAHPERD if you incur any problems that affect the quality of your Health Education and Physical Education program and your students.

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

How to help children fall in love with fitness |
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
According to an Institute of Medicine study, participating in physical activity can improve a child's performance at school thanks to greater attention and focus. Practicing physical activity at an early age, even if it's just throwing or kicking a ball, can also help develop essential motor skills and coordination, in addition to maintaining healthy weight and helping kids develop a positive body image. Study finds obesity, bullying and gun-related violence among top childhood health concerns |
The Ann Arbor News
Americans believe that obesity and bullying are the two most significant childhood health concerns nationally, while gun-related violence and teen pregnancy round out the top 10 issues. According to a new University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, 55 percent of the 2,027 adults surveyed said childhood obesity remains as the biggest problem in the country, while 52 percent identified bullying as the second-biggest problem. At lunch, home-packed may not mean healthy |
The Boston Globe
The nutritional shortcomings of school lunches have been a matter of national debate for decades - but the focus has been on what schools serve, not on what moms and dads pack in the lunch bags. Now Tufts University researchers have looked inside all those bags - and discovered that none of the lunches met all five National School Lunch Program standards, which emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low- or nonfat dairy, and only 27 percent of the lunches met at least three of the goals. Physical activity in our schools isn't a frill |
The Hamilton Spectator
So, a new study from McMaster University's Child Health and Exercise Medicine program and a Burlington charitable group called Start2Finish finds there is a clear connection between fitness levels and improved school performance. Why do we need another study to tell us what we already know? We need academic and scientific work like this because, while we know in general terms that more exercise is better, we don't necessarily know to what extent that is true, nor do we have quantifiable data. School vending-machine bans and kids' nutrition |
HealthDay News via WebMD
Banning vending machines from schools without making other food policy changes can actually lead to greater consumption of fast food and soda, according to a new U.S. study. If kids still have access to high-fat, high-calorie foods and beverages from other sources, restricting vending-machine fare won't have much effect, the University of Illinois at Chicago researchers explained. Scientists say child's play helps build a better brain |
NPR
When it comes to brain development, time in the classroom may be less important than time on the playground. "The experience of play changes the connections of the neurons at the front end of your brain," says Sergio Pellis, a researcher at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. NJ Driver Education Conferences |
We are excited to report that the first regional Driver Education Conferences held last Monday and Tuesday at Maple Shade High School and Westfield High School, respectively, were a tremendous success. Over 160 driver education teachers from schools across the state attended the day-long conference which focused on helping them leverage a myriad of free resources as they prepare to start the new school year. From learning about Share the Keys, Champion Schools and the GDL Game Plan for Coaches to the Mover Over program and bike and pedestrian safety initiatives and much, much more, the teachers were thrilled with all of the free resources they were introduced to. They also worked cooperatively on developing lesson plans and will be able to use these this fall, and had the chance to ask questions of the Motor Vehicle Commission at both sessions. A huge thank you to all of the organizations who participated in the "speed" resources (think speed dating) session, to NJAHPERD for handling the registration process and CEUs, to Drive Safer and their entire team for the set-up, resource booklet, videography, in-car demonstration and more (it's just unbelievable all that Jason Friedman and his team did!). To NJ Manufacturers for their sponsorship, which enabled us to keep the registration fee very low and give every teacher who attended a one-year NJAPHERD membership, and to Maple Shade and Westfield High Schools (Sue and Barbara you rock!) for making their facility available to us. And last but not least, a HUGE thank you to Maureen Nussman, the Teen Safe Driver Coalition's volunteer driver education coordinator, for pulling this all together.
