EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

What wonderful summer weather we have had! I hope you have enjoyed the outdoor physical activites and relaxation the summer months bring. If you are looking for one more fun event to attend, come join us at the Barclays Golf Tournament on August 19-24, at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus. NJAHPERD has a few tickets available for purchase or you can purchase through TicketMaster until August 17th. Southside Johnny will be performing on August 22nd and the Irish Rover concert will be on August 23rd on the 17th Hole. Also available are numerous food trucks, mini golf and other FUN activities. Kids go FREE with paid adult ticket.

On a more serious note, here are updates from the New Jersey State Board of Education meetings that I attended on behalf of NJAHPERD on July 9th and August 6th.

  • The Revised Core Curriculum Content Standards were adopted. You can find the newly revised Comprehensive Health Education and Physical Education Standards HERE
  • The Revised PRAXIS II Tests and Qualifying Scores were adopted.
  • As the result of conversations with teachers, administrators, and other education stakeholders, the DOE proposed minor changes to the educator evaluation rules in N.J.A.C. 6A:10, Educator Effectiveness. (TEACHNJ) CHANGES
  • How Teachers Develop SGOs powerpoint was presented. I recommned that you review so that you are clear with the expectations.
  •  The State Board also made it easier for teachers to appeal those scores. Under the new process, a teacher can get a review if his/her SGO score causes a rating to drop to "ineffective" or "partially effective". The scores can be adjusted by a chief school administrator or the commissioner if the appeal is unsuccessful.

Please contact NJAHPERD if you incur any problems that affect the quality of your Health Education and Physical Education program and your students.

Enjoy the remaining weeks of Summer!

JoAnn Doherty

WEBINARS:

Wednesday, Aug. 20

6-6:45pm

Cost: Free

For many teachers, the first few weeks of school are an emotional rollercoaster.  So much to prepare for, so much to do!  We all know it's important to establish a positive learning environment from the very first minute with our students; yet how exactly do we accomplish that?  How do we set the right tone, introduce learning objectives, establish protocols for class management, and foster an atmosphere of cooperation and trust?

Attend this free SPARK webinar and leave with strategies and activities that lay a solid foundation for student learning, ready to build upon.  Brick by brick, your program will grow the entire year!

Join SPARK Project Specialist Jeff Mushkin and guest speaker Steve Bruecker for this webinar.  Steve has over 33 years of teaching experience, a master's degree in physical education, and was the 1999 National Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year.  He began implementing SPARK into his classes in 1995 and became a SPARK middle school trainer in June 2002.

Attendees will learn:

  • Ideas for introducing, teaching, and assessing social skills

  • Strategies for implementing student-centered guidelines, expectations, and routines

  • Sample cooperation and trust activities for the first few weeks of school

Wednesday, Sept 10
1:00-2:00pm
This webinar will discuss the implications of the PA Report Card, including a question and answer session with Drs. Katzmarzyk and Pate.

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education

ARCHIVED

Cost: Free

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.
