WEBINARS:
Time: 3:00-4:00 pm EDT
Learn how your community can take action to increase physical activity using the National Physical Activity Plan, a comprehensive set of policies, programs, and initiatives that aim to increase physical activity in all segments of the American population. The Plan aims to create a national culture that supports physically active lifestyles to improve health, prevent disease and disability, and enhance quality of life.
On this webinar, we'll discuss the Plan's recommendations for the parks and recreation sector, public health agencies, and local governments. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the effects that transportation systems, development patterns, and community design can have on physical activity. You'll also learn how providing access, education, and resources that help local residents incorporate fun and meaningful physical activity into their daily lives can foster real change in the national level of physical activity.
Speakers will include two members of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, National Physical Activity Plan Alliance:
--Russell R. Pate, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Exercise Science, Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina
--Jim Whitehead, Executive Vice President/CEO, American College of Sports Medicine
Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

Masters athletes face unique physiological and nutritional challenges
|
President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition
Taking a holistic approach means that in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle, we must pay close attention to our energy balance equation. In addition to regular physical activity, good nutrition is also critical to ensuring athletes maintain a competitive edge as they age, and reach new heights in their sports or recreational activities throughout their lifespan. Proper nutrition includes staying hydrated and consistently consuming complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthy fats. When older "masters" athletes are fueled by the right nutrients, they can achieve better performance outcomes. MORE

Experts: Outdoor play should be a key part of kids' activity |
The Canadian Press via The Province
As children gear up to participate in sports leagues and camps this summer, experts say it's important to ensure time is also devoted for youngsters to enjoy less structured outdoor, active play. Mark Tremblay, chief scientific officer of Active Healthy Kids Canada, has previously described active play as the "overlooked sibling" of the physical activity equation. MORE

Physical activity tied to strong bones, but most teens don't get enough |
Reuters via Chicago Tribune
Young people who are more active growing up tend to end up with stronger bones, but many older teenagers don't get enough exercise to see those benefits, a recent study found. The good news, researchers said, is that lots of physical activity during childhood seems to set up young adults for years of strong bones, even if they don't exercise much during their teen years. Brain signals link physical fitness to better language skills in kids |
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign via Medical Xpress
Children who are physically fit have faster and more robust neuro-electrical brain responses during reading than their less-fit peers, researchers report. These differences correspond with better language skills in the children who are more fit, and occur whether they're reading straightforward sentences or sentences that contain errors of grammar or syntax. Get Outside and Play! Summer Physical Activity Tips |
Let's Move Active Schools
Beautiful weather is in the forecast, and getting outside for some fresh air, sunshine, and a dose of Vitamin D is a great way to get students ready to focus and learn. Here are a few tips: 1. Take Your Students on a "Power Walk" Get their arms pumping at a 90 degree angle, and take brisk steps. Mark a walking trail on your school grounds if you do not have a track and begin a walking tradition. 2. Use the Playground Equipment as a Form of Exercise Take the class outside, and as they walk or jog, have their path lead them to the playground. Cross the bars, climb up, climb down, or slide down. Spread the class out to start at different intervals 3. Lead by Example Participate with your students during the activity breaks. It will help you to refocus and get ready to teach! 4. Get Inspired Check out our Resource Library for ideas to keep your students moving throughout the summer! 5. PASS the Test Use the Physical Activity School Score (PASS) to assess activity at your elementary school and learn about evidence-based school practices that can increase students' moderate to vigorous physical activity.

June is CPR Awareness Month
|
AHA
June is CPR Awareness Month!!! Here are some ideas for a quick and easy activity for your students and information about what CPR will mean to them as they continue their high school education: Just 62 seconds could save the life of a family member, loved one, student, coworker, friend or bystander.
June 1-7 is National CPR and AED Awareness Week, a time of year that spotlights how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. Please consider gathering your students and/or faculty to share this short 62 second Hands-Only CPR demonstration video and be a part of our life saving campaign to train One Million Community Lifesavers in One Minute. | Hands-Only CPR Demo Video | By showing the 62 second video your students it will increase their connection to the AHA mission and they can also learn about making a difference just like they do when they participate in Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart. For the CPR training numbers to be valid, we will need a simple roster of attendees (just first and last name) who viewed the video. (roster template) When complete, please scan and email or send the roster to me at 15 Gerald Ave., Red Bank, NJ. Please keep in mind that....More than 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests happen in private or residential settings. Unfortunately, only 41 percent of people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in public receive the immediate help that they need before emergency help arrives. You can be the difference between life and death. Hands-OnlyTM CPR can double or even triple a victim's chance of survival, and most often the victim is someone you love or know.
Heroes Aren't Born. They're Trained ... by Learning CPR!

CPR In Schools!!!! |
AHA
Did you know that on Thursday, May 15th, the Assembly Education Committee in Trenton voted unanimously to release the CPR in Schools Bill from the committee. This Bill would require students to receive instruction in CPR and the use of an AED prior to their graduation from high school. The next step in the process is for the full Assembly to vote on the legislation. Please take a few moments to thank the members of the Assembly Education Committee for voting yes and to encourage your legislators to vote yes when the bill comes up for a vote, which we hope will happen in June. The Senate has not yet moved the legislation, but we hope that they will soon! Click here to take action now!
