Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education

ARCHIVED

Cost: Free

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

A report card you couldn't bring home
Washington Post
If you ever received a report card like the one issued on the physical activity of U.S. youngsters recently, you simply wouldn't bring it home. When four "incompletes" are the best you can point to, it's time to get ready for summer school. Specifically, the assessment of children's physical activity included a B-, two C- grades, a D, a D-, an F and those four incompletes. Aside from the head scratcher of deciding there wasn't enough information to grade 40 percent of the categories their own committee developed, the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance and the American College of Sports Medicine delivered another well researched critique of how little exercise our children get and why. • Foot Fire gets kids running on the balls of their feet and improves speed

Tips for Goal Setting
NYRR Newsletter

Setting goals keeps runners focused and motivated and, moreover, will help them achieve results in all areas of their life-in sports, school, and life.

Encourage your team to set end-of-season goals. Explain that vague goals like "get faster" and "improve" are not precise enough. Similarly, easily attainable goals lack the punch needed to produce long-term change. The biggest personal strides are products of goals that are both specific and challenging.

To help runners set appropriate goals, establish a baseline or starting point for them. If speed is the goal, holding a time trial is a simple way to do this. At the start of the week, when runners' legs are fresh, time them at their race distances. Runners must give a serious effort for this to work effectively. Once your runners have baseline times to work from, discuss goals for the season individually.

Good sample goals include:

  • Running a mile without stopping
  • Breaking 8 minutes in the mile
  • Placing in the top 5 at the county championship
  • Jumping over 16 feet in the long jump

Check out our time trial instructional video for high school runners for more tips.

ADHD and sports: Setting children up for success on and off the field
Deleware County News Network
For children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, participation in sports can be a great way to practice many of the skills that are impacted by their disorder. In addition, playing sports may allow these children to develop self-confidence that they may lack due to difficulties at home or at school. It's important for coaches to understand the child's strengths and weaknesses. Here are some general tips that may be useful for coaching children with ADHD. MORE
Are athletes really getting faster, better, stronger?
TED
When you look at sporting achievements over the last decades, it seems like humans have gotten faster, better and stronger in nearly every way. Yet as David Epstein points out in this delightfully counter-intuitive talk, we might want to lay off the self-congratulation. Many factors are at play in shattering athletic records and the development of our natural talents is just one of them. MORE

While boosting health and fitness are often promoted as the key benefits to increased physical activity, growing attention is now being given to its potential to impact across all areas of life. Gregor Henderson, who advises the U.K. government on public health and well-being issues, said there was now good scientific evidence that taking part in sport boosted educational achievement, increased confidence and improved mental health. Few children outgrow obesity risk
WTSP-TV
New research out of All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, reveals "very few at-risk children are able to outgrow their weight risk during school age." Lead researcher Dr. Racquel Hernandez said it's a long-standing expectation from parents and providers that with time, children outgrow obesity when they're young, so she set out to find out if it happens and how often. "We found that fewer than one in five children outgrow their risk of obesity, and if they're gonna do it, they're gonna do it between the ages of kindergarten and first grade," Hernandez said. "They're not gonna do it later on."  MORE
Why education matters to health
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Why is education such a major factor in shaping health? The links are complex and tied closely to income and to the opportunities people have to lead healthy lives in their communities. Smaller social networks, higher neighborhood crime rates and exposure to childhood trauma are just a few reasons why those with fewer years of education tend to live sicker, shorter lives. MORE

Bill requires parent/teen education as a prerequisite to obtaining permit
Legislative update
The Assembly Transportation Committee will hear testimony on A1699 tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the State House Annex in Trenton.  The bill, which is sponsored by Committee Chairman John
Wisniewski and Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, requires parent/teen education as a prerequisite for a teen to obtain a permit, extends the permit from a minimum of 6 to 12 months, and requires permit holders to log a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving.  You may recall this bill was approved by both houses of the NJ Legislature last December only to be pocket vetoed by the Governor on the final day of the Lame Duck session in mid-January.

NJAHPERD supports this bill and  has submitted a letter of support. We will keep you posted on the bill's status as it begins its journey through the Legislature.

Teen Driver 365 Program
Toyota
Last month, Coalition member Andy Anderson (Essex Cty Police Academy), his daughters, Kristin and Hannah, and Pam Fisher of NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition were invited to attend the opening day of the NY Auto Show to test drive Toyota's TeenDriver 365 distracted driving simulator.  The girls and Pam each gave it a try and Pam confessed that she didn't do very well.  Each sat in a Toyota and were instructed to put on a 3D visor that was connected to a computer.  Cameras monitored the driving and displayed what each was  seeing in the visor on a TV screen.  Toyota employees instructed each to perform a task (i.e., pick up a water bottle, text, reach behind the seat for a bag, change the radio station) that many motorists attempt to do while driving.  These activities clearly distracted each driver and impacted their ability to safely operate the vehicle.  If you'd like to learn more about the Teen Driver 365 program click here.
Notes on 32nd Annual Lifesavers Conference
NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition
Later in the month, Andy, Violet Marrero (Div. of Highway Traffic Safety), Maureen Nussman (volunteer DE coordinator) and Pam Fisher traveled to Nashville for the 32nd annual Lifesavers Conference .  Each spoke on a workshop panel focused on teen safe driving and also had the opportunity to connect with over 2,000 safety advocates from around the country.  It was a great opportunity to talk about the important and good work we're doing here in NJ.  Pam was pleased to report that our state is held up as a model for our work in promoting the proven principles of graduated driver licensing.  So thank you to each and everyone of you for all you are doing to help NJ teens survive their most dangerous driving years!!!!!

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program from National Dairy Council (NDC) andNational Football League, in collaboration with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program encourages students to lead the charge in making healthy changes in their school by implementing strategies to increase access to nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and physical activity.

Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 is a competitive funding opportunity to help schools implement the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. The money is intended specifically to help schools jumpstart and sustain healthy nutrition and physical-activity improvements.
