A message from your president |
CELEBRATE THE PROFESSION!
What better way to advocate for our profession and be recognized for the impact we have on the health of our students than to celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. We encourage you to do something "special" during the week of May 1-7 to call attention to the importance of quality physical education and physical activity. If your school is involved in state testing this week, it's a great time to send the message that physically active students are better learners. Classroom teachers may appreciate a list of "activity breaks". SHAPE America has some quick and easy suggestions for activities to get you and your students moving! More
Don't forget to share the fun and excitement of your May events with NJAHPERD so we can post on our Facebook page and in the next edition of the FYI.
The New Jersey State Board of Education will honor NJAHPERD by presenting a RESOLUTION at the State Board of Education meeting in Trenton, on Wednesday, May 7th to recognize National Physical Education and Sports Week May 1-7, 2014. Jackie Malaska, Executive Director and I will accept the RESOLUTION on behalf of NJAHPERD and we invite you to join us at 10AM at the NJ DOE.
I also want to give you a heads up on what happened at last month's State Board of Education meeting. David Hespe, the new Acting Commissioner of Education, at the April 2, 2014 monthly meeting had two items on his AGENDA you might want to look at as teachers in NJ.
Item H - Educator Effectiveness (Sunset: October 2, 2019) - these amendments proposed are intended to facilitate the continued establishment of fair, accurate, and robust evaluation systems in NJ public schools. The amendments reflect lessons learned during the past six months from pilot school districts and input from stakeholders across the state - particularly from school districts (read more on their website).
NJAC 6A 10 Educator Evaluation TEACHNJ FD - A SLIDE presentation on Amendments to TEACHNJ - Educator Evaluation Regulations- At the meeting regulations were introduced to provide clarification, correct minor errors and make adjustments to the current regulations to improve implementation in 2014-2015. Please review slides 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11 of the powerpoint presentation given at the meeting.
You can find all this valuable information regarding the evaluation process on the NJDOE website. Click on "meetings" and go to "agenda."
NJEA has included an article in the May 2014 REVIEW that may help you prepare for your summative evaluation.
Best wishes,
JoAnn Doherty

For Your Administrator...Moving Kids Towards Success! School Policies that Support Active, Attentive Students |
Thursday, May 14, 2pm-3:30pm EST
Children who are physically active and fit tend to perform better in the classroom, but many schools allow little to no time for students to be active, due to a lack of resources, personnel, or time in the day. Policies that support daily physical education and regular activity breaks during the school day can help increase physical activity, elevate physical fitness levels, and improve academic performance and classroom behavior among students. This Web Forum will provide evidence for the importance of physical activity in the school setting, and offer ideas and strategies to get kids moving during the school day.
Specifically, this forum will:
Define quality physical education and physical activity; Draw relationships and summarize findings between physical activity and academic achievement; Address the challenges of implementing activity programs in schools; and Offer recommendations to prioritize schooltime activity on a local level.

The Record
Thomas Jefferson Middle School students say it's a myth that children don't like fruits and vegetables, and they listed the kinds they like to eat: tomatoes, cucumbers, corn. The garden, dedicated recently as the Michelle Obama Interdisciplinary Outdoor Garden, was inspired by the first lady's Let's Move campaign to fight childhood obesity. MORE

Let children play: The benefits of physical activity

Daily Local News
Children don't exercise. Children play. But if the play becomes too competitive and not enough fun, some children get turned off to sports or physical activity altogether. The trick to getting children to love exercise includes making it fun and offering multiple opportunities for them to feel comfortable playing without the pressure to perform. MORE

Still much work to be done...childhood obesity |
AHA
I'd like to take a moment to address recent media reports on childhood obesity that have been conflicting and somewhat confusing. First, the CDC released numbers in February showing that obesity in children aged 2-5 dropped by 43% from 2003-2012. This news was of particular interest to us here in New Jersey. The Garden State's obesity rate for children from low-income families in this age group has been one of the highest in the country.
However, the optimism resulting from those numbers were short lived. In April, another article in JAMA Pediatrics took another look at the data and found that while the obesity rate for all children ages 2-19 has leveled off since 2010, but there was not a substantial decrease. In addition, rates of severe obesity are increasing in some groups.
If you would like to learn more about this issue, Preventobesity.net recently ran an interview with Sally Wong, PhD RD CDN Associate Science and Medicine Advisor at the American Heart Association. It does a great job of explaining the difference in data.
The important thing to note is that there is still much work to be done to address childhood obesity in New Jersey and throughout the country. I thank you for your action and attention on this issues and hope that you will continue to support the American Heart Association's efforts to address childhood obesity by increasing access to healthy foods and physical activity for all New Jersey children and their families.
Sincerely, Corinne Orlando Government Relations Director New Jersey

Leading Sexual Health Organizations Release National Teacher Preparation |
Standards for Sexuality Education Developed so every student has high quality, comprehensive sexuality education
In an unprecedented unified effort, the nation's leading sexual health education organizations have come together to release The National Teacher Preparation Standards on Sexuality Education. These standards were created to provide guidance to institutions of higher education in order to better prepare undergraduate physical and health education teachers to deliver sexuality education in school settings. In the United States, sexuality education is most commonly taught within the health curriculum at the middle and high school levels. In addition to parents, America's teachers play a vital role in providing young people with the information they need to protect their health and futures. However, only 61% of colleges and universities require sexuality education courses for health education certification and nearly one third of teachers responsible for sexuality education report receiving no pre-service or in-service training in this area. The National Teacher Preparation Standards will better prepare undergraduate physical- and health education students to provide high-quality comprehensive sexuality education that is developmentally, culturally, and age appropriate. "Providing instruction on sexual health education can be challenging, we understand that," said Elissa Barr, PhD, co-author and Associate Professor of Public Health, Director of Community Health, Brooks College of Health, University of North Florida. "Teachers have the unique opportunity to directly impact the health of our youth, including their current and future relationships." The National Teacher Preparation Standards address seven broad professional areas: Standard 1: Professional Disposition Teacher candidates demonstrate comfort with, commitment to, and self-efficacy in teaching sexuality education. Standard 2: Diversity and Equity Teacher candidates show respect for individual, family, and cultural characteristics and experiences that may influence student learning about sexuality. Standard 3: Content Knowledge Teacher candidates have accurate and current knowledge of the biological, emotional, social, and legal aspects of human sexuality. Standard 4: Legal and Professional Ethics Teacher candidates make decisions based on applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies, as well as professional ethics. Standard 5: Planning Teacher candidates plan age- and developmentally-appropriate sexuality education that is aligned with standards, policies, and laws and reflects the diversity of the community. Standard 6: Implementation Teacher candidates use a variety of effective strategies to teach sexuality education. Standard 7: Assessment Teacher candidates implement effective strategies to assess student knowledge, attitudes, and skills in order to improve sexuality education instruction. With these standards, teacher-preparation programs will be able to guide curriculum, instruction, and assessment decisions among their undergraduate students who will eventually be responsible for teaching sexuality education. The recent CDC findings that report 80 percent of teens ages 15-17 have had no formal sex education before they have sex for the first time, certainly point to a missed opportunity for educators and community members to provide young people with the skills and tools to make healthy decisions about sex and relationships. "We expect teachers to be well prepared in every other curricular area. Why should sexuality education be any different?" asks Nora Gelperin, director of training at Answer. "Health teachers are hungry for support. With the release of the National Teacher Preparation Standards we are stepping up and providing teachers with the training they need." Polls show there is broad support for comprehensive sex education among parents, teachers, health care professionals, and young people. "Comprehensive sex education, when done well, can provide a foundation not just for the prevention of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, but for the promotion of health throughout young people's lifetimes," said Debra Hauser, president of Advocates for Youth. "Preparing our nation's educators is an essential step towards making sure that young people have the information and skills they need to make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health." The development of the National Teacher Preparation Standards is part of the ongoing Future of Sex Education (FoSE) Initiative. After wide success with the National Sexuality Education Standards, which has spurred state and local level implementation of sexual health education in states as varied as Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Washington and Connecticut, this new focus is on writing guidance specifically for faculty in teacher preparation programs. "The Future of Sex Education (FoSE) partners are committed to ensuring that all public school students in the United States have access to high-quality, age, culturally, and developmentally appropriate comprehensive sexuality education delivered by well-trained teachers," said Monica Rodriguez, president of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). "We hope that school administrators, classroom teachers, university faculty, and others who care about public education are able to use the resources and tools that we've developed to ensure that our nation's young people have the foundational elements needed to live a sexually healthy life." The National Teacher Preparation Standards for Sexuality Education is currently available in the online publication of the Journal of School Health and will also be available in the printed June edition. More information on the Teacher Standards can be found here.
The Future of Sex Education (FoSE) Initiative is a partnership between Advocates for Youth, Answer, and the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS) that seeks to create a national dialogue about the future of sex education and to promote the institutionalization of comprehensive sexuality education in public schools. Share the Keys...register now! |
Friday, May 9
Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety has made numerous updates to Share the Keys, the New Jersey Parent Teen Orientation since over the last few years. The orientation has been researched, evaluated and refined to effectively reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.
Share the Keys is approximately 90 minutes in length, presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and can be linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. The orientation is designed for parents and their teens in the pre-permit or permit state of licensure (parents and their teens already holding a probationary license will also benefit) and includes a resource guide full of materials that support parental involvement and safe driving behaviors. New PSA campaign for pedestrian and railroad safety |
Operation Lifesaver
Operation Lifesaver (rail safety) has launched a new 30-second PSA campaign to highlight pedestrian and driver safety at railroad tracks, dubbed "See Tracks? Think Train!" You may not be aware that NJ has more than 300 rail crosses statewide so this is an important issue that we should share with our family, friends, colleagues, teens, parents and others in our networks.

Up to $4,000 Per School Available Through "Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60" |
Deadline: June 4, 2014
Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program from National Dairy Council (NDC) andNational Football League, in collaboration with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program encourages students to lead the charge in making healthy changes in their school by implementing strategies to increase access to nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and physical activity.
Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 is a competitive funding opportunity to help schools implement the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. The money is intended specifically to help schools jumpstart and sustain healthy nutrition and physical-activity improvements.
Any school in the U.S. can enroll in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Signing up online is free, easy, and fast, at www.FuelUpToPlay60.com. In addition to being enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60, schools applying for Funds must participate in the National School Lunch Program and have an adult Program Advisor, registered through the website. Schools enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60 are eligible to receive up to $4,000 per school year for projects, efforts, and initiatives designed to help increase awareness of, and access to, nutrient-rich foods and physical activity opportunities. The Fuel Up to Play 60 program's online "Playbook" offers many healthy eating and physical activity ideas to choose from that are suitable for funding.
Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 are used for a variety of activities and purposes -- from resources that help enhance students' healthy eating (such as foodservice equipment and nutrition education materials) to items that help schools address students' physical activity needs (including exercise equipment and student and staff incentives). Funding proposals must include both healthy eating and physical activity elements. There are two application opportunities for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. The first of application window closes on June 4, 2014, and the second on November 5, 2014.
In addition to the opportunity to apply for Funds, there are many other reasons for schools to join Fuel Up to Play 60! More than 73,000 schools across the nation are already Fuel Up to Play 60 schools, encouraging students daily to eat healthy, be active, and implement long-term, positive changes. The program offers an enormous array of FREE tools, resources, instruction, and encouragement to do just that. There are also leadership opportunities for students as part of the Ambassador program.
