EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

We're back!  NJAHPERD was strongly represented at the SHAPE America (formerly AAHPERD) Convention in St. Louis, MO last week. We also have great stories to tell about our interrupted dinners, 5am wake up calls and our  trips to basement garages or hotel hallways as a result of tornado warnings! You can't believe all the networking you can accomplish while waiting for the "all clear" signal. It was just amazing!

The convention was the platform for the official announcement for the new name, tag line and logo for the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America. Many new initiatives and resources are available to help you including the NEW National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education. Download a flyer listing the new Standards as well as an extensive chart that details grade-specific outcomes for students.

Other changes were evident with the last AAHPERD Representative Assembly. Under the new guidelines for SHAPE America, New Jersey will represent the Eastern District with a member-at-large and one alternate member-at-large delegate to the National meeting to represent all SHAPE America members. The same will hold true for the Eastern District Association meeting.

On the State level, I want to update you on the progress made from our March 12th "SPEAK OUT! Day" visit to "The Hill".  Through our combined efforts, Representative Albio Sires (D-NJ- District 8) has joined Representative Donald Payne, Jr. as a co-sponsor of The PHYSICAL ACT Bill.  Please thank them for co-sponsoring Representative Marcia Fudge's (D-Ohio-District 11) House of Representative Bill H-R- 2160 (Promoting Health as Youth Skills in Classrooms and Life Act) to have Health Education and Physical Education as core academic subjects.

Our Representatives and Senators will back in their home Districts from April 14th through April 25th. We still have the power and voice of 2,000 strong in membership to get them to co-sponsor the PHYSICAL Act, which by the way they all support. I urge you to help make our life long profession stronger and call, email, or personally visit their offices and ask them to co-sponsor the PHYSICAL Act Bill (H.R. 2160 and Senate Bill 392).

Check out the new SHAPE America Legislative Action webpage and click on the  TAKE ACTION NOW button. Please continue to use this site at least once a week to send your prepared email to your Federal Legislators (over 8,000 email letters have been sent thus far).

  11. Representative Chris H. Smith (R-NJ-District 4) Freehold - 732-780-3035

I know your call, email or personal visit can and will make a difference. We are very close to getting additional Legislators to support the Bill, but we need all of you to push them by asking them to sign on as a Co-Sponsor to The Physical Act.

We can do this because we care about our students and the quality Health Education and Physical Education programs in New Jersey. Thank you in advance for your assistance and let's keep "ADVOCACY MOVING FORWARD".

Happy Passover and Happy Easter!

Sincerely yours,

Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Elementary schools increasingly offering walking and biking programs
SRTS

The prevalence of elementary school participation in Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs increased by 54 percent between 2006-2007 and 2012-2013, according to a research brief from Bridging the Gap. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the brief's authors found that nearly one-third of students attending schools with SRTS programs walked or biked to school, compared to approximately 20 percent of students at schools without such programs.

Safe Routes to School

Through collaboration with existing organizations, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership is working to ensure that the existing Safe Routes to School federal funds, the new Transportation Alternatives funds, and other possible MAP-21 funding sources are put to the best possible use at the state and local levels.

Sports: A means to peace and development
Express Tribune
For 15-year-old Kainat Hameed, standing in front of an audience was a major challenge a year ago. Recently, a confident Hameed didn't shy away while recounting this in front of a large gathering at the International Day for Sport for Development and Peace. Crediting her passion for volleyball and table tennis, she said that her active engagement in sports had taught her the discipline to address large gatherings and host events. The intentional use of sport, physical activity and play to harness values such as peace and development is a relatively new concept for many, especially in societies closed off to the idea of change. However, learning these skills at school and practicing them at home, children are benefiting from sports.  MORE

Let's Move! Active Schools is designed to address these challenges by spurring innovative solutions and offering customized support every step of the way.  We know that our kids need 60 minutes of physical activity daily, not only so they can grow up healthy, but also because we know it helps them succeed in school.  That's why this program empowers schools to find free or low-cost ways to incorporate movement before, during, and after the school day.  We'll help connect schools to grant opportunities, online resources, personal assistance, and hands-on professional development.

There's just one thing we're still missing-YOU, the CHAMPION! The one dedicated person to step up and start making a difference.

All you have to do is sign up at LetsMoveSchools.org and follow a simple, six-step process to create an active school environment and build support among leadership, staff, families, and other community members.  Along the way, you'll have access to free tools and resources to help you take action.

From the New Jersey Teen Safe Driving Coalition
April 22, 2014
From the New Jersey Teen Safe Driving Coalition:
You are invited to participate in the New Jersey's Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP).  If you're not familiar with the SHSP, every state is required to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses its most significant traffic safety issues using the four E's -- engineering, education, enforcement and emergency services.  NJ adopted its first SHSP in 2007 with significant stakeholder input from the four E's.  The NJ Dept. of Transportation and the NJ Div. of Highway Traffic Safety, in partnership with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance (the state's three MPOs), will hold an SHSP planning workshop on Tuesday, April 22 from 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at The Conference Center at Mercer, 1200 Old Trenton Rd, West Windsor, NJ 08550.

The workshop agenda will include an overview of the planning process, goal setting and NJ's vision for transportation safety, updates on best practices using the 4 E's in NJ, and the plan emphasis areas.  After lunch, there will be breakout sessions to discuss individual emphasis areas one of which is teen drivers.  I'll be facilitating that breakout session (which will also address older drivers) with Cheri Marti from the project consultant CH2MHill (she is also the former Highway Safety Director of Minnesota)  If your schedule permits, I encourage you to attend the workshop and participate in the teen/older driver track.  There is no fee to participate and lunch will be provided.  However, you do need to register by contacting Pat Ott, Principal of MBO Engineering (also a member of the project consultant team), ASAP.
Share the Keys...register now!
Friday, May 9

Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety has made numerous updates to Share the Keys, the New Jersey Parent Teen Orientation since over the last few years. The orientation has been researched, evaluated and refined to effectively reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.

Share the Keys is approximately 90 minutes in length, presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and can be linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. The orientation is designed for parents and their teens in the pre-permit or permit state of licensure (parents and their teens already holding a probationary license will also benefit) and includes a resource guide full of materials that support parental involvement and safe driving behaviors.  MORE

New PSA campaign for pedestrian and railroad safety
Operation Lifesaver
Operation Lifesaver (rail safety) has launched a new 30-second PSA campaign to highlight pedestrian and driver safety at railroad tracks, dubbed "See Tracks? Think Train!" You may not be aware that NJ has more than 300 rail crosses statewide so this is an important issue that we should share with our family, friends, colleagues, teens, parents and others in our networks.
