Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Is recess necessary? |
Tallahassee.com
As our children face more demands of higher level thinking at a younger age, the time for preparation, teaching, learning and discovery has changed for our 21st century learners. We, as adults recall days of recess being a daily portion for every grade kindergarten through fifth-grade student and the purpose behind it was social interaction and physical activity. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child's development and, as such, it should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons. MORE |

Allowing Youth Sports to be Child's PlayWhy Do Kids Play Sports? |
Nationwide Children
The picture of youth sports today is far different from that of the early 20th century. Physical activity in the form of "free play" was a more common daily occurrence for most children then. This unstructured and spontaneous form of activity improved motor skills while developing creativity and encouraging interaction with others.
Today, the child-organized games in the neighborhood that many of us remember have given way to adult-organized youth sports. The experience that a young athlete has with a sport can be positive or negative depending on the focus of the league and goals set by parents and coaches. MORE

10 Ways to Celebrate National Nutrition Month |
Presidentschallenge.org
March marks National Nutrition Month, a campaign developed by the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to emphasize the importance of nutrition education and awareness. This special month provides an opportunity for individuals to gain information on making healthy choices through learning about nutrition and how to incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives. When you're deciding new ways to incorporate more nutritious foods and new activities into your daily routines, consider the following ideas:
- Try one new vegetable or fruit once a week to expand your nutrition repertoire.
- Over the weekend, prepare a new recipe with your whole family, giving everyone the opportunity to try a new dish and have some fun in the kitchen.
- When visiting your favorite restaurant, try a new, lighter option.
- Experiment with a new cuisine such as Korean, Indian, Mexican, or Italian - these cuisines often feature flavorful, nutritious foods prepared in exciting ways.
- For the entire month, whenever you are grocery shopping, purchase one new meat, vegetable, fruit, or grain each week.
- Prepare lean proteins in new ways - broiling, baking, pan-searing, grilling.
- Add new flavor additions to favorite dishes, such as mango chutney, wasabi, tapenade, and hummus.
- Throughout the month, pair lean proteins with different, wholesome grains such as brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, or bulgur for a healthy dose of fiber.
- At the beginning of the week, cut up veggie sticks that can easily be accessed throughout the week.
- Start taking a leisurely stroll outside with friends or family after dinner a few times a week - this is a great way to enjoy the warmer weather and sneak in a little exercise at the end of the day.

Learning fractions may never be the same - nor, for that matter, may understanding photosynthesis, remembering which is an isosceles triangle or even choosing the right words for a poem. It's called "arts integration" and whether it involves personifying fractions with body shapes or enacting the water cycle in movement, it's a primary goal of "Any Given Child," the Kennedy Center arts education initiative. About a dozen Florida dance teachers, from the public school system and local arts organizations, recently got a daylong dose of what integration looks like in practice, discovering how their art can enhance a student's academic understanding - or vice versa.
