EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

Happy Spring, Happy Ides of March and Happy St. Patrick's Day to each and every one of you.

First, I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for breaking all previous records at our Annual NJAHPERD Convention in attendance, convention sessions and the amount of vendors we had present.  The positive vibrations of professionalism, networking, and excitement going on all three days was contagious, enthusiastic and heartwarming.  I could see and hear "Advocacy on the Move" as I went around the convention and I knew individual learning was taking place that would definitely add to each individual's quality health and physical education programs and ultimately benefit your students.

Second, as your second-year President, my theme for 2014-2015 is "Advocacy Moving Forward."  What better way to start advocating than for our membership to have gotten involved in SHAPE AMERICA's (formerly AAHPERD) Speak Out Day?   I am very proud to say that NJAHPE RD was able to send six members who volunteered to attend.  The six representatives we sent to The Hill on March 11-12 were Jackie Malaska, Kelly Graham, Grace Kaler, Jill Julian, Ted Olsen and I. Shape America had a total of 125 participants.  This was the largest delegation in the six years since the program's inception and represented 36 States.  NJAHPERD's delegates visited with seven legislative assistants/correspondents from Senator Menendez, Senator Booker, Representative Lance (District 7), Representative Smith (District 4), Representative Pascrell (District 9), Representative Frelinghuysen (District 11) and Representative Garrett (District 5).

All of the Senators and Representatives we saw from New Jersey support recognizing Physical Education and Health Education as Core Academic Subjects, but as of yesterday, had not signed on to Co-Sponsor the Physical Act Senate Bill S-392 nor the House Bill HR. 2160.  Our purpose for being in their offices was to ask them to co-sponsor those Bills.  The only Representative from New Jersey who has signed on to HR. 2160 is Donald Payne, Jr. (District 10).  If you live in his district please send him an email thanking him for co-sponsoring and please ask him to continue his support for our programs.  We are also pleased to tell you that they all support the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP).  We asked them to please continue to support the PEP Grant as a stand-alone program at the current funding level of $ 74.5 million.

A BIG thank you to our members, their families and friends for responding to NJAHPERD's e-blasts ACT NOW and Asks by going to SHAPE AMERICA's Legislative Action Center and sending letters to your Legislators and visiting THUNDERCLAP.  Our goal was met.  The results of the THUNDERCLAP Campaign to support Health and Physical Education are SUPPORTERS 607 of 500 = 121% of goal supported and SOCIAL REACH = 217,070 people.

I would appreciate your continued support over the next two weeks to keep on our Federal officials by continuing to send those letters through SHAPE AMERICA's Legislative Action Center.  I told all the Representatives we spoke to on Wednesday that I would be following up with them in two weeks regarding our ASKS.

Let's continue to keep "Advocacy Moving Forward" here in New Jersey so the whole child is insured a quality Physical Education and Health Education program as a common core subject.

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

No recess? No problem!

With temperatures across the US at all-time lows, recess is being cancelled and students are stuck indoors. This doesn't mean the kids have to be sitting still. Turn your classroom into an interactive gaming center in four steps.

Give each group dice and a mat with activities in squares around the edge. Activities are easy to do in a limited space and range from strength to stretching and aerobic conditioning.
Let each person take a turn to roll the dice. To see how many of each activity the group should perform, the teacher or leader can also roll another dice.
Add some math equations to the game by having the class add the two rolls or multiply.

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart!  To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).

Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association.  These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues.  Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.

How It Works....
JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers.  They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school.  Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:

- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event.
- Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event.
- Tips for fundraising.  Participants ask friends and family for donations.  The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier!
- Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.

But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store.  Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.

With your support, we can help protect and improve children's health!  Sign up today!

Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in women, taking the life of 1 in 3 women each year.  If your school does not currently participate in Wear Red Day consider joining the movement to create awareness about this health threat facing women and educate your co-workers about cardiovascular disease.  Please contact Go Red For Women now for information and to register for your complimentary fund raising kit which includes our Red Dress pins, posters and educational resources about risk factors, warning signs and much more.

What is more impactful than teaching your students to save lives?
At www.bethebeat.heart.org  students will tour through an online lesson with fun, engaging sections about how the heart works, recognizing a sudden cardiac arrest, performing Hands-Only CPR and using an AED.  Consider incorporating Be The Beat into one of your health lessons this year.  See the attached Be The Beat lesson plan from one of our Hoops For Heart coordinators in Ocean Township, NJ. Click here for additional lesson plans.

NJAHPERD Actively Monitors NJ Legislation
Did you know that NJAHPERD pays a legislative consultant to monitor bills that come forward that affect our profession? We also work closely and seek advice from the AHA Government Relations Director on Health and Physical Education, NJEA and our ShapingNJ partners.

Recess Bills A3935/S1501 if approved by Legislators, requires 20 minutes of daily recess for K-5 elementary students.

Newly introduced legislation includes:

S-2981/A-4452
Requires State Board of Education to adopt standards and benchmark of performance for improvement of teacher preparation  programs and teacher certification candidates who complete the programs and develop a program rating system.
S-3017
Requires school districts to incorporate age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education in grades preschool through 12 as part of the Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.
