Convincing Your Administrator of the Value of Attending the NJAHPERD Convention |
NJAHPERD understands the challenges in obtaining approval to attend professional development events and we are here to help. If you have never attended or need to justify your participation at the NJAHPERD Annual Convention, we suggest you consider the following tips:
Don't be afraid to ask your administrator to attend. Many are not aware of the availability of content specific health and physical education professional development opportunities, unless you tell them. Have a list of specific sessions that you plan to attend and cite how the information will assist you in improving teacher effectiveness and student learning. Especially note the sessions focusing on assessment, Common Core, teaching strategies, fitness and current health issues. Consider sharing your learning experiences at an in-service day, staff meeting or in a summary report to your collegues.
If your administrator tells you funding is not available this year, ask the PTA/PTO to supplement the registration fee or award a grant. Consider paying your own registration fee this year and request that your supervisor add the expense to the budget for next year. A small investment in your own professional development will be paid back many times over.
Discuss attending the Convention with your administrator with confidence. Professional Development is critical to effective teaching.

How Are You Evaluated? |
The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples. |
Eastern District Association/AAHPERD Announces Award Recipients |
Kandice Point-Du-Jour has been awarded the EDA Dance Education Teacher of the Year Award. Kandice teaches at Columbia High School in South-Orange Maplewood School District.
Jill Goldman, has received the EDA Outstanding Professional Award for Physical Activity and Recreation. The award is given annually to up to two people in each discipline who best exemplify exceptional and outstanding contributions to their respective disciplines. Jill serves as the Council for Services Representative for NJAHPERD.
Kelly Graham, a senior at Montclair State University, and Grace Kaler, a senior at Rowan University, have both been awarded the EDA Future Professional Award. This award is given annual to up to two undergraduate students.
Award recipients will be honored at the EDA Awards Banquet during the EDA Convention in Newport, RI.
Congratulations to both Jill and Kandice.

While planning for this year's fundraiser for the American Heart Association, Thomas Jefferson Middle School learned it was an award winner for last year's endeavor.
Last year the middle school hosted its first Hoops for Heart event in February, which featured a basketball tournament. After the school surpassed its goal of raising more than $10,000 by collecting $13,000, Vice Principal Dominick Tarquinio offered more incentive. If students reached $16,000 he agreed to shave his head. Music teacher Scott Avidon and math teacher Matthew Cecconi also agreed to have their heads shaved. MORE

Olympic Resources and Lesson Ideas |

Modify PE activities to re-create and simulate some of the Olympic sport events and spirit with the students. An example: Simulate Speed Skating for elementary students by using sheets of 8x11 kitchen wax paper. Smooth side down on the floor, students' feet on the rough side up. Set some cones a distance away and have them do the skating motion keeping feet on the floor continuously to move the paper..... it works and is challenging but fun. Bob sleds were the scooters as another idea. Finally, keep a chart or graph of medals won. The official Olympic music video is very inspirational and could be a great discussion prompt for Character Education, physical training, etc. It could also just be a great listen for fun and entertainment or stations in your classroom. The Paralympics is an opportunity to talk about and address diversity and sensitivity. The Winter Olympics give us plenty of opportunity for implementing athletic development and the common core into our lessons. Germany has pretty much dominated the Bobsled competition dating way back to the 1920s. If you watch this video of them in training you'll see why.
EXERCISE: Kata with Exercise Bands
PURPOSE: Shoulder stability, strength, and power. Overall body agility and Coordination.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Exercise Bands, music. IMPORTANT- CHECK BANDS FOR WEAR AND TEAR BEFORE USING.
TWEAK DOWN: One person holds bands while the other moves; use a smaller diameter band; keep the elbows slightly bent; keep hands in peripheral vision; use a smaller arc of motion; use one band/two hands.
TWEAK UP: Use a wider diameter band; mirror a partner.
REPS/SETS: 3-4 sets of 30-60 seconds.
COMMON CORE INTEGRATION:
Math: "How does the resistance on the bands change as it elongates? How does it correlate to traditional dumbbells"..."Measure the circumference of the circle you are training in".
Literacy:
In your opinion, based on this chapter, what is the purpose of kata, and why do you think the German Bobsledder is doing it with exercise bands?
Language: "What is the English translation of Kata? What words are synonyms...antonyms? "How is it used outside of Martial Arts?"

PEP Maintains $74.5 million in FY2014 Budget Battle! |

The US House and Senate have approved an omnibus spending bill that will fund government operations through September 30, 2014. The bill included $74.5 million for the PEP program.
As you know, PEP has been the focus of elimination by some members of the US House. Its survival is due in no small part to the activity and voices of AAHPERD members. In an era where federal budgets are shrinking, but childhood obesity rates are expanding, this is wonderful news for those of us on the frontlines working to keep our nation's students active and healthy.
I ask that you keep our message strong as the final year of the 113th Congress gets underway. SPEAK Out Day is March 12TH! Please sure to have your state represented. Thank you again for your hard work and congratulations! Carly Braxton AAHPERD

One Thing Could Make A Real Difference In Chris Christie's Call For A Longer School Day |

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is in the middle of a huge scandal over the closing of approach lanes to the George Washington Bridge. While giving his State of the State address earlier today, he acknowledged the unfolding political woes of "bridgegate." Soon after, he turned his attention-and a sizable chunk of the speech-to education. He mentioned that New Jersey boasts a 87.5 percent high school graduation rate and more than $25 billion in annual investments in public education, though shortcomings and challenges still exist. So, how to make improvements? Lengthen both the school day and the school year.
Without more time in class, Christie warned, it will be tough to produce students who can stay competitive in the global economy. What he did not say is that without more exercise and recess activity built into those longer days and years, bridge traffic will continue to be a problem for New Jersey residents. That's because unless the governor adds in some funding for more physical activity in schools, the only way the next generation of kids will be able to approach the George Washington Bridge-or any other roadway-is in an ambulance. Did you know that less than half of youth get the recommended 60 minutes of daily vigorous to moderate-level physical activity? A new interactive infographic from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) shows how students can meet those requirements, based on recommendations from the 2013 IOM report Educating the Student Body: Taking Physical Activity and Physical Education to School. Check out the website.
The IOM report says that even with busy schedules, youth can get 60 minutes of physical activity per day through taking advantage of active transport to and from school, classroom activity time, recess, physical education class, after-school programs, and intra and extramural sports. The number of kids and teens who are obese has nearly tripled in the past three decades, leading to a generation at risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other serious health problems. However, there is hope. For the first time in recent years, obesity rates have declined. Innovative public health approaches and partnerships are contributing to improved food choices and creating opportunities for physical activity, helping to curb obesity. We must continue to fund public health programs to ensure healthy futures for all of our nation's children.

Most children are not meeting daily physical activity requirements |

Over the last thirty years the rate of childhood obesity has doubled in young children and tripled in adolescents. So, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to learn that most children aren't getting enough physical activity each day. "It is concerning that the kids aren't getting as much exercise as they need. Being bullied can lessen physical activity later |

Overweight or obese children are often teased when they exercise, which can cause a child to be less likely to participate in physical activity one year later, according to new research. The children who were teased experienced a lower perceived health-related quality of life. Health-related life quality is measured by an individual's perception of their physical, social, academic and emotional functioning. The USDA Food and Nutrition Services published the Joint Statement of Collaboration for Local School Wellness on their website (see below for full text). The national associations and organizations listed below have joined the US Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (USDA FNS), US Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the US Department of Education (ED) by sharing resources pertaining to local school wellness policies. In the joint statement below, these associations and organizations express their support of local school wellness policies as a key framework for schools' efforts to create a healthy environment for children that supports nutritious food choices and physically active lifestyles.
The following co-signed national associations and organizations issue this joint statement to recognize the critical role schools play in promoting wellness among staff, students, and families.
"We firmly believe that the Local School Wellness Policy, as required by the US Congress in Public Law 111-296, Section 204, provides a tremendous opportunity for schools to assess and improve how their school environment, wellness policies, programs, and activities contribute to the health and well-being of our nation's children. We are committed to providing assistance to school districts and schools as they assess, revise, adopt, implement, maintain, monitor, and evaluate local school wellness policies that will positively affect their students, schools, and communities. We are committed to supporting the efforts of school districts through collaborations, resources, and other forms of assistance.

But students in both wealthy and less affluent areas are coming up short with regard to physical activity, finds a new study in the American Journal of Health Promotion. "Kids living in low SES areas often lack outlets for activity near home, with less access to safe streets, parks and playgrounds," commented Dr. Russell Pate, director of the Children's Physical Activity Research Group at the University of South Carolina. | Pam Powers has been a certified fitness instructor and personal trainer for over thirty years. Her most recent certifications are Zumba® and Zumba® Kids. Other awards include Outstanding Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator, Professional Merit Award, and National Dance Association Honor Award. Pam has presented at a wide range of conferences and in-services for teachers across the United States and she has been a NASPE Pipeline presenter. She grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and currently resides in Houston, Texas. She taught physical education for ten years in Albuquerque. Pam served as the Director of Educational Services and Professional Development for Sportime from 2007 to 2013. She is an exercise enthusiast and enjoys a variety of physical activities including yoga, Zumba, TRX, walking, and jogging.
Pam holds a BS in Physical Education, and an MS in Curriculum and Instruction. She has an extensive dance background and competed in ballroom dance.

PA Tips for Cold Weather | No recess? No problem!
With temperatures across the US at all-time lows, recess is being cancelled and students are stuck indoors. This doesn't mean the kids have to be sitting still. Turn your classroom into an interactive gaming center in four steps.
Place activity boards on the center of tables with students in groups of 4-6. Give each group dice and a mat with activities in squares around the edge. Activities are easy to do in a limited space and range from strength to stretching and aerobic conditioning. Let each person take a turn to roll the dice. To see how many of each activity the group should perform, the teacher or leader can also roll another dice. Add some math equations to the game by having the class add the two rolls or multiply. You can find this game and others similar to it in our resource section.

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
| This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart! To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).
Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association. These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues. Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.
How It Works.... JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers. They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school. Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:
- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event. - Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event. - Tips for fundraising. Participants ask friends and family for donations. The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier! - Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.
But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store. Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.

D3 (Don't Drive Distracted) 2014 Contest Launched |
DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation
The DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation launched its D3 (Don't Drive Distracted) contest for 2014. The 2014 contest is similar to those in the past, but this year we've decided to change it up a bit. In the past, we asked students to submit ideas for public service campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. This year, we're asking students to focus on developing campaign ideas on how teens can act as role models for their parents and other adults to get them to put down the phone, slow down, lower the music and, well that list goes on, while driving. Contest registration continues through February 28th. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on May 3rd, and will have their choice of a new car or $18,000 college scholarship (to date, each winner has selected the scholarship.) This year's contest is open to high school students in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. MORE
