Convincing Your Administrator of the Value of Attending the NJAHPERD Convention |
NJAHPERD understands the challenges in obtaining approval to attend professional development events and we are here to help. If you have never attended or need to justify your participation at the NJAHPERD Annual Convention, we suggest you consider the following tips:
Don't be afraid to ask your administrator to attend. Many are not aware of the availability of content specific health and physical education professional development opportunities, unless you tell them. Have a list of specific sessions that you plan to attend and cite how the information will assist you in improving teacher effectiveness and student learning. Especially note the sessions focusing on assessment, Common Core, teaching strategies, fitness and current health issues. Consider sharing your learning experiences at an in-service day, staff meeting or in a summary report to your colleagues.
If your administrator tells you funding is not available this year, ask the PTA/PTO to supplement the registration fee or award a grant. Consider paying your own registration fee this year and request that your supervisor add the expense to the budget for next year. A small investment in your own professional development will be paid back many times over.
Discuss attending the Convention with your administrator with confidence. Professional Development is critical to effective teaching.
We hope to see you at the Jersey Shore in February!
Please contact the NJAHPERD office if you have any questions.

Convention Volunteers Needed |
The NJAHPERD Convention Planning Committee is seeking volunteers to assist at the convention in various capacities and time requirements. If you have interest in assisting at registration, introducing speakers, selling NJAHPERD apparel or helping in any way, please contact the NJAHPERD office or indicate your choice during the online registration process.

AAHPERD is now SHAPE America |
A managing partner of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Active Schools initiative, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) has announced that its membership has approved changing the association's name to the Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America.
According to President Gale Wiedow, interim dean of the College of Education at Dakota State University in Madison, SD, "We are now poised to move forward in creating a new chapter in our 128-year-old history with our new name, vision and mission. A new logo, tagline and brand for the organization, as well as a new website, will be introduced early in 2014."
Through our new name we are working to:
∙ Shape a future where healthy is the norm
∙ Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education
∙ Shape the lifelong habits of young people
∙ Shape and influence policy related to physical education and school health education
SHAPE America is the organization's seventh name change since its founding in 1885 as the Association for the Advancement of Physical Education. The largest organization of physical educators in the country with close to 20,000 members, SHAPE America created the first ever National Standards for K-12 Physical Education, developed the Let's Move in School public awareness campaign to increase physical activity before, during and after school, and originated the Shape of the Nation Report, which reviews the status of physical education across the United States, among its many professional firsts.
Wiedow added, "Having an acronym that actually says and means something helps to make our new name more memorable. In addition, the verb shape means influence and communicates leadership and power. We want SHAPE America to have increased visibility and recognition among our primary audiences of physical and health educators as well as our secondary audiences ─ parents, principals, school administrators, policy makers, and the media. I am confident that our strong, memorable and simple new name will help us do just that."

New PE Standards & Outcomes Offer More Guidance Than Ever Before |
AAHPERD Physical education teachers across the country now have access to the fundamental tools they need to provide their students with quality physical education programs. AAHPERD is proud to announce that the new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education are now posted on-line. |
How Are You Evaluated? |
NJAHPERD recommends that you review the article that appeared in the second edition of MOMENTUM, the new newsletter of the AAHPERD, Fall 2013 entitled: Please Share with Your Principal "What's going on in the gym?" Three Things to Look for When Evaluating Physical Education Teachers. Please share this with your colleagues and administrators.
The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples. |

Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Integrating Common Core Standards into Physical Education |
PELINKS4U
The Common Core is a national movement to adopt common standards and assessments for English language arts and mathematics. These standards aim to create assessments that will not vary among states and will determine whether students are meeting those standards. Common learning goals provide a clear direction for what educators and parents should aim for. It creates a level playing field for all students independent of the state they reside in. Common Core Standards are designed to make the student college and career ready. The goal is to have the students succeed in a global economy and society. Students are provided with rigorous content that creates an environment in which they have a deeper level of understanding. MORE

Get ready for "No Name-Calling Week" |
GLSEN
Every child deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. That's why NJAHPERD has joined forces with GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network) Central New Jersey Chapter to promote No Name-Calling Week during January 20-24, 2014. No Name Calling Week (NNCW) is a national initiative started in 2004. The concept of NNCW builds on the story in the young adult novel by James Howe, The Misfits. In this story a group of students join forces to face the challenges of name calling and ultimately make a powerful impact on their school with the proposal of a no name calling day. This year's No Name Calling Week focuses on Celebrating Kindness while working to create safe schools free of name-calling, bullying and bias.
Educators can join the NNCW Listserv and download a variety of free materials. GLSEN also sponsors The National Creative Expression Exhibit for NNCW. This exhibit gives students the opportunity to submit works of art that express their ideas and experiences with bullying. In 2011, over 1,000 students submitted pieces from a variety of artistic mediums. MORE Additional information and assistance in developing No Name-Calling Week programs as well as a limited supply of free materials can be arranged by contacting GLSEN Central New Jersey Chapter, cnj@njglsen.org. BTW, each school and program is welcome to choose any time of the year to offer No Name-Calling Week. The immediacy of the national dates, January 20-24, does not need to be a constraint for your program.

Saul Hudson is better known to millions of rock fans as Slash. And to a younger generation of gamers, the former Guns N' Roses lead guitarist is known for his work on Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock back in 2009 and the new Realta Entertainment BandFuse: Rock Legends Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game. Games like BandFuse and Ubisoft's Rocksmith franchise are bringing about a resurgence in videogame music at a time when many schools have eliminated musical education. 'Fitness Trail' offers glimpse at possible future of recess
|
WTVJ-TV
The future of recess might be happening at Rockway Elementary School in Westchester, Fla. They call it the "Fitness Trail," a series of signs posted along the school's hallways. Using an iPad, children scan the quick response codes from the posters and follow along to the short exercise video that appears on the screen. "And the kids are motivated," said Dr. Jayne Greenberg, Miami-Dade's school district director or physical education. "It's a different way to incorporate physical activity into the school day." The idea isn't to replace the playground, it's to find other ways to get kids active in between classes. MORE

Physical education in school is changing for 'your' better
|
Miami Herald
Physical education was primarily about the physical, playing basketball or football, with not much on the education side. Athletic children would dominate, and many of the rest would stand around and watch. The children who most needed physical education got the least out of it. Times have changed. Nowadays, physical education plays a vital role in the students' development and growth. According to recent medical studies, the physical well-being of a student is directly related to his or her development in class. It's only in physical educational classrooms that students learn the value of taking care of themselves through healthy eating, exercise knowledge, successful academics, high self-confidence, good sportsmanship and a positive lifestyle. How to be prepared for a fitness resolution |
Maple Valley Reporter
That time of year is once again upon us where the new year provides a fresh start in achieving those fitness goals that have proven to be so elusive in years past. There is a group of people who, every year around this time, end up in either my office or the orthopedist's office. These are the people who, in spite of doing no physical activity all spring, summer or fall, run to their local gym and try to make up for their inactivity in their first two hour workout. One can guess the common results: injury, overexertion, chest pain, and a baffled realization that perhaps we aren't all as young as we once were. When starting to exercise, it is critical to get your body back into shape and reteach it what to do. MORE |

Paying children to eat healthier school lunch increases consumption of fruits, veggies |
Medical Daily
The phrase "eat your fruits and vegetables" is often echoed by parents during childhood years to encourage healthy eating habits at a young age. However, getting children to eat fruits and veggies could often be a burden as parents may feel their children dislike for these healthy snacks seems like second nature. Now, getting children to eat their recommended serving of fruits and veggies may have gotten a little bit easier but also a little bit sneakier. Children who are offered small monetary rewards for healthy eating increase their fruit and vegetable consumption by 80 percent, according to a recent study. MORE

Studies show the long-term, positive effects of fitness on cognitive abilities |
Washington Post
It has long been accepted that exercise cuts the risk of heart disease and recent studies suggest a raft of more general benefits, such as reducing the risk of certain types of cancer and even preventing the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Now it seems that gym junkies can also expect a boost in brainpower, too. This is not just the vague glow of well-being suggested by sayings such as "a sound mind lives in a healthy body." John Ratey, a neoropsychiatrist at Harvard Medical School and others are finding that fitness has a long-term influence on a wide range of cognitive abilities. MORE |

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
| This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart! To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).
Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association. These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues. Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.
How It Works.... JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers. They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school. Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:
- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event. - Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event. - Tips for fundraising. Participants ask friends and family for donations. The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier! - Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.
But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store. Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.
With your support, we can help protect and improve children's health! Sign up today!
