EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

I hope the New Year has been good to you all in spite of the weather!

In my message in the December 15th FYI Newsletter, I wrote about my theme for NJAHPERD this year, "Advocacy on the Move," and how important it is to be diligent in educating others about our programs and profession.  I believe 2014 is the year we should take our advocacy efforts to the next level.  I encourage New Jersey professionals and future professionals to join the NJAHPERD leadership for a road trip to Washington, DC on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 and for our Hill visits on Wednesday, March 12th. This is our chance to educate our Federal Legislators on the value of quality health and physical education programs. Let's change the attitude and thinking of the Congressmen and women that we sent to Washington and convince them to sign on and co-sponsor the Physical Act (Promoting Health as Youth Skills in Classroom and Life.) This bill will designate health and physical education as core subjects in federal education law.  We will also be encouraging our federal lawmakers to support the PEP grant funding which is the only federal education funding for physical education.

All 50 states are invited to attend Speak Out! Day which is organized by SHAPE America (formerly AAHPERD). The POWER is in the hands and voices of the people and NJAHPERD can have a strong, powerful voice if we all work together and speak out on the HILL.

Leave the driving to us! Limited funding is also available to help defray the cost of lodging. If you are interested in joining us, please register with SHAPE America (AAHPERD) or call the NJAHPERD office for more information. Help us make a difference on Capitol Hill for our students.

Convincing Your Administrator of the Value of Attending the NJAHPERD Convention

NJAHPERD understands the challenges in obtaining approval to attend professional development events and we are here to help. If you have never attended or need to justify your participation at the NJAHPERD Annual Convention, we suggest you consider the following tips:

Don't be afraid to ask your administrator to attend. Many are not aware of the availability of content specific health and physical education professional development opportunities, unless you tell them. Have a list of specific sessions that you plan to attend and cite how the information will assist you in improving teacher effectiveness and student learning. Especially note the sessions focusing on assessment, Common Core, teaching strategies, fitness and current health issues. Consider sharing your learning experiences at an in-service day, staff meeting or in a summary report to your collegues.

If your administrator tells you funding is not available this year, ask the PTA/PTO to supplement the registration fee or award a grant. Consider paying your own registration fee this year and request that your supervisor add the expense to the budget for next year. A small investment in your own professional development will be paid back many times over.

Discuss attending the Convention with your administrator with confidence. Professional Development is critical to effective teaching.

We hope to see you at the Jersey Shore in February!

Please contact the NJAHPERD office if you have any questions.

Convention Volunteers Needed

The NJAHPERD Convention Planning Committee is seeking volunteers to assist at the convention in various capacities and time requirements. If you have interest in assisting at registration, introducing speakers, selling NJAHPERD apparel or helping in any way, please contact the NJAHPERD office or indicate your choice during the online registration process.

 How Are You Evaluated?

The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples.

Shellie Pfohl, the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will be the featured speaker at the Opening Session on Monday, February 24, 2014. Shellie  was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation.

Let's Move Active Schools: Helping Students to Reach their Greatest Potential
Shellie will discuss the current obesity and physical inactivity epidemics that plague our nation's youth and share information on current initiatives, including Let's Move! Active Schools and the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which support educators in engaging students in physical activity every day. She will also share opportunities for health and physical educators to become champions for change within their schools environment. Additionally, she will discuss the importance of collaboration at all levels - local, state and federal - to improve the health of our nation's youth.

 Tuesday Closing Session

Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, will present YOU DON'T KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME, a one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.

Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.

More Bang for YOUR Buck  "Effective Teaching Strategies for Large Class Sizes"
Wednesday, January 15, 2014

6pm Eastern
Cost: Free

As school budgets decrease, physical education class sizes grow.  Large class sizes limit learning and teacher feedback, and usually have a negative effect on the student MVPA levels (time engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity).

Research shows smaller classes are associated with higher achievement at all grade levels.  Unfortunately, physical educators must play with the hand they are dealt.  We need to maximize our time and resources to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to learn.

Attend this SPARK webinar and learn strategies large class/limited space strategies that really work!

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education

ARCHIVED

Cost: Free

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Advocating for our profession. Is anyone listening & do we really need to do it? (Part 1)
PELinks4U
We have all had the following experience; you have just finished what you felt was an outstanding presentation to your students and as you gaze at their faces you would bet your next paycheck that not a one of them really listened to anything you just said. Interestingly, if you made that bet you would likely lose that paycheck because most of us who have taught for a fair length of time have also had another type of experience. Years later, a student you viewed as a "slacker" and who you would have sworn was not taking your lessons to heart comes back to visit, and much to your surprise they are in great shape and doing well, and tell you how much your PE class helped them.

Advocating for your profession, similar to teaching, can sometimes seem like a fruitless effort. While passionately advocating for what we believe in we secretly doubt that the message is getting through. Advocacy is also like teaching in that the results of what we do are rarely immediate and almost never predictable. Trying to predict when and if that student who appeared disinterested in your classes will take your message to heart is impossible but we deliver the message anyway. To further our chances of success most teachers also learn to deliver information frequently and consistently. When I taught middle school our 6th graders did not really seem to understand the sermon of health and fitness that I was preaching but somewhere in the following three years, after repeated exposure, I discovered that the vast majority of them saw the light and started to understand the importance of maintaining their health and fitness. Want Authentic Learning? Don't Forget That Children Have Bodies!
Early Chilhood Teacher
Too often it seems as though we believe children exist only from the neck up - that they consist of brains alone.

In George Graham's book, Teaching Children Physical Education, he talks about going to school boards to fight for the inclusion of physical education in the curriculum. Yes, he admits, it would be easier and far more cost-effective if we could just bus the children's heads to school ... but, inconveniently, they do happen to be comprised of other body parts, as well. His book also features an illustration depicting headless children walking into a gym. The implication being that we must not move in the classroom or think in the gym.

Whence comes this fervent belief in the mind and body as separate entities? MORE
Getting out of seat stimulates brain
PSEA
Judy Millar and Tim McCord took a Harvard researcher's saying to heart, and they are seeing the results in the classroom.

Millar's high school English classes aren't where one would expect to see physical exercise emphasized.

But Millar, like the now retired McCord, believes in the words of renowned Harvard Medical School professor John Ratey: "Exercise is Miracle-Gro for the brain.''
So, about 20 minutes into her 43-minute classes in the Titusville Area School District, Millar tells her students, "It's time to get the blood out of your butts.''

They may stand and do exercises during these "brain breaks,'' or they may run out of the classroom, through the hallway, down the stairs, and out the door; then traverse the same route while heading back to class.

Mentally, "I have them for the rest of the class after that,'' said Millar, noting that the attention span of adolescents is roughly the equivalent in minutes to their age. MORE

Education: It Matters More to Health Than Ever Before

1 in 4 Youth Meeting Daily Physical Activity Guidelines - CDC 2014 Report
CDC
The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, which have been adopted by the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative and the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend that youth participate in daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for at least 60 minutes (1-5). This report presents the most recent national data from 2012 on self-reported physical activity among youth aged 12-15 years, by sex and weight status. This report also describes the most common types of physical activities-outside of school-based physical education (PE) or gym classes-in which youth engage. MORE
Elementary school uses sports to teach math
Fox News
VideoBriefFifth grade math students at suburban Atlanta's Woodward Elementary are keeping track of college football scores and records. They're converting raw data into fractions and percentages. Although their teacher Scarlett Childers could have used a variety of real world examples to teach math, it's no coincidence she focuses on college sports. MORE
Use it or lose it: Dancing makes you smarter
Stanford University
For centuries, dance manuals and other writings have lauded the health benefits of dancing, usually as physical exercise. More recently we've seen research on further health benefits of dancing, such as stress reduction and increased serotonin level, with its sense of well-being. Most recently we've heard of another benefit: Frequent dancing apparently makes us smarter. A major study added to the growing evidence that stimulating one's mind by dancing can ward off Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit. Dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages. MORE
iPads new trend to engage students in physical education
Daily Times Herald
Iowa's Wade Obrecht moves around the gym with motivation and excitement. The Fairview Elementary School third-grader is working on his volleyball serve and a classmate is offering instruction. Other students in the gym are working on forearm passes or overhead passes while some fellow students record the action on iPads. "You put weight on your right foot and then locate it to the left, and then swing your arms to the ball," Obrecht explained. "It's really fun." This fun is a new way iPads - often labeled the enemy to activity - have come to Keith Petersen's classes to engage students in physical education. MORE
CDC and AAHPERD Release New Guide For Developing Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs
CDC and AAHPERD
CDC, in collaboration with American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), developed a step-by-step guide for schools and school districts to develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school physical activity programs. The guide can be read and utilized by an existing school health council or wellness committee, or by a new group or committee made up of physical education coordinators and teachers, classroom teachers, school administrators, recess supervisors, before- and after-school program supervisors, parents, and community members. It can be used to develop a new comprehensive school physical activity program or assess and improve an existing one. MORE

HEALTH EDUCATOR NEWS YOU CAN USE

US to relax healthy school-lunch rules after student complaints
Reuters via CBS News
There may be some good news for students complaining that their school lunches are unappetizing and leave them hungry. U.S. regulators said they were permanently relaxing school meal rules that were designed to combat childhood obesity by reining in calories and portion sizes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had initially loosened the rules in late 2012, suspending daily and weekly maximum amounts for grains and meat or meal alternatives. That allowed school districts to service larger portions without penalty. MORE

Playing high school sports associated with better health, fitness in old age
The Huffington Post
If you played high school sports, your future self may thank you. A new study shows that playing sports in high school is a predictor of whether a man in his 70s will be fit and healthy. The study, published in the journal BMC Public Health, shows that elderly men needed to visit their doctors fewer times a year if they played high school sports. Plus, men who played high school sports were more likely to exercise 50 years later than those who didn't play high school sports. MORE

We know that you are facing all sorts of challenges and balancing multiple priorities, while striving to do every single thing you can to help your students learn and grow.

Let's Move! Active Schools is designed to address these challenges by spurring innovative solutions and offering customized support every step of the way.  We know that our kids need 60 minutes of physical activity daily, not only so they can grow up healthy, but also because we know it helps them succeed in school.  That's why this program empowers schools to find free or low-cost ways to incorporate movement before, during, and after the school day.  We'll help connect schools to grant opportunities, online resources, personal assistance, and hands-on professional development.

There's just one thing we're still missing-YOU, the CHAMPION! The one dedicated person to step up and start making a difference.

All you have to do is sign up at LetsMoveSchools.org and follow a simple, six-step process to create an active school environment and build support among leadership, staff, families, and other community members.  Along the way, you'll have access to free tools and resources to help you take action.

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart!  To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).

Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association.  These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues.  Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.

How It Works....
JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers.  They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school.  Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:

- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event.
- Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event.
- Tips for fundraising.  Participants ask friends and family for donations.  The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier!
- Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.

But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store.  Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.

With your support, we can help protect and improve children's health!  Sign up today!

The Keys to Control

Your students want to drive, but there's more to getting behind the wheel than accelerating and braking. Learn from the pros about the importance of vehicle dynamics and car control. Understanding how to control your car, why it does what it does, and the physics behind it are essential for understanding how to properly "TELL" your car what to do. This session is a must for every driver educator and anyone who drives --be sure to bring a colleague!

D3 (Don't Drive Distracted) 2014 Contest Launched
DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation
The DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation launched its D3 (Don't Drive Distracted) contest for 2014.   The 2014 contest is similar to those in the past, but this year we've decided to change it up a bit.  In the past, we asked students to submit ideas for public service campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.  This year, we're asking students to focus on developing campaign ideas on how teens can act as role models for their parents and other adults to get them to put down the phone, slow down, lower the music and, well that list goes on, while driving.

Contest registration continues through February 28th.  The winner will be announced at a ceremony on May 3rd, and will have their choice of a new car or $18,000 college scholarship (to date, each winner has selected the scholarship.)  This year's contest is open to high school students in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
