A message from your president |

I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, happy Kwanza and a very healthy, happy and productive New Year.
As you reflect on the past year and make plans for 2014, please include a professional New Year's resolution as one of your goals. As you know, my theme for my presidency has been "Advocacy on the Move". Now more than ever, we all need to be a "grassroots" advocate and stand up for what we believe will help our profession, students, schools and communities. As educators and future educators we need to be proactive in 2014. Silence may appear as apathy or satisfaction with the status quo and administrators and boards of education will continue to make decisions about our programs based on their own past experiences. Academic achievement weighs heavily on the minds of decision makers and this should be our point of entry. We must invite administrators into our gymnasiums to shine the spotlight on ways in which we infuse the common core content standards in physical education and in our health education classrooms. We also need to meet with our classrooms colleagues and use our expertise to help them get students active in the classroom as a means by which to raise tests scores and improve attendance and behavior. Yes, collaboration with our professional colleagues really does work.
To assist our members in their advocacy efforts, I have invited Carly Braxton, Senior Manager of Advocacy, SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators (formerly AAHPERD) to present a convention session on why advocacy is vital to the success of quality health and physical education programs across the country and here in New Jersey. As a participant you will receive valuable advocacy training and access to resources to strengthen your advocacy efforts at the national, state and local levels.
If you would like to learn more, I invite you to join me on Tuesday, February 25th from 9:15 to 10:15 AM, in the McKinley Room at the Ocean Place Resort. I look forward to seeing a room filled with passionate professionals learning to advocate for your students and the profession. Together, let's find out the best way to correct something that doesn't seem right. Let's keep "Advocacy on the Move" here in New Jersey. Thank you for doing your part.

AAHPERD is now SHAPE America |
A managing partner of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Active Schools initiative, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) has announced that its membership has approved changing the association's name to the Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America.
According to President Gale Wiedow, interim dean of the College of Education at Dakota State University in Madison, SD, "We are now poised to move forward in creating a new chapter in our 128-year-old history with our new name, vision and mission. A new logo, tagline and brand for the organization, as well as a new website, will be introduced early in 2014."
Through our new name we are working to:
∙ Shape a future where healthy is the norm
∙ Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education
∙ Shape the lifelong habits of young people
∙ Shape and influence policy related to physical education and school health education
SHAPE America is the organization's seventh name change since its founding in 1885 as the Association for the Advancement of Physical Education. The largest organization of physical educators in the country with close to 20,000 members, SHAPE America created the first ever National Standards for K-12 Physical Education, developed the Let's Move in School public awareness campaign to increase physical activity before, during and after school, and originated the Shape of the Nation Report, which reviews the status of physical education across the United States, among its many professional firsts.
Wiedow added, "Having an acronym that actually says and means something helps to make our new name more memorable. In addition, the verb shape means influence and communicates leadership and power. We want SHAPE America to have increased visibility and recognition among our primary audiences of physical and health educators as well as our secondary audiences ─ parents, principals, school administrators, policy makers, and the media. I am confident that our strong, memorable and simple new name will help us do just that."

New PE Standards & Outcomes Offer More Guidance Than Ever Before |
AAHPERD Physical education teachers across the country now have access to the fundamental tools they need to provide their students with quality physical education programs. AAHPERD is proud to announce that the new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education are now posted on-line. |
How Are You Evaluated? |
NJAHPERD recommends that you review the article that appeared in the second edition of MOMENTUM, the new newsletter of the AAHPERD, Fall 2013 entitled: Please Share with Your Principal "What's going on in the gym?" Three Things to Look for When Evaluating Physical Education Teachers. Please share this with your colleagues and administrators.
The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples. |

Monday Opening Session
Shellie Pfohl, the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will be the featured speaker at the Opening Session on Monday, February 24, 2014. Shellie was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation.
Let's Move Active Schools: Helping Students to Reach their Greatest Potential Shellie will discuss the current obesity and physical inactivity epidemics that plague our nation's youth and share information on current initiatives, including Let's Move! Active Schools and the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which support educators in engaging students in physical activity every day. She will also share opportunities for health and physical educators to become champions for change within their schools environment. Additionally, she will discuss the importance of collaboration at all levels - local, state and federal - to improve the health of our nation's youth.
Tuesday Closing Session
Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, will present YOU DON'T KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME, a one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.
Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.

Discussing Health and PE as National Core Curriculum Subjects |
by Steven Wehrle, Physical Education Teacher, Greenwich Township, NJ
Obesity in this county has reached an all-time high. More than one third of all Americans are considered obese and over two thirds are considered overweight. This shocking trend of Americans who are at an unhealthy weight has had tremendous consequences to the healthcare costs in the country. One of the main combatants of obesity is daily physical activity. In order to foster a love of movement and activity in adult years, students need to be enrolled in quality Health and Physical Education programs during a child's schooling years. With those thoughts in mind, I believe that a comprehensive Health and Physical Education program is important to children and should be added to the National Core Curriculum Standards.

Principal Leadership Magazine
E. Paul Roetert and Shellie Y. School administrators face pressures: achieving competitive test scores to receive funding; addressing new ways to manage behavioral issues in the classroom; and implementing new methods to focus today's generation of students, who are constantly looking for stimulation. A cost-effective and unique approach to accomplish those goals is to help your students be more physically active throughout the school day." MORE

Why a brisk walk is better |
New York Times
Walking - fast or slow - is wonderful exercise. But now a first-of-its-kind study shows that to get the most health benefits from walking, many of us need to pick up the pace. The findings stem from a new analysis of the National Walkers' Health Study, a large database of information maintained at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory about thousands of middle-age men and women who walk regularly for exercise. Motivation key in physical education class |
Kennebec Journal
PE 2 at Coney High in Augusta, Maine, is intended to help students develop confidence, discover their strengths beyond the physical ones and learn how to communicate and solve problems within a team. The class is part of a long-term movement in physical education that de-emphasizes calisthenics, competition and, to some extent, team sports, in favor of alternative activities, development of workforce skills and grading students on their individual effort or progress. "I think very traditional physical education was a great place for athletes or people who had some genetic predisposition to athletic ability," said Cheryl Richardson, an official of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. "That obviously is not the environment that we are trying for now. Now we're trying to motivate and inspire. If they hate PE, they may not choose to be active outside of PE class." MORE

Effective Education and Development of Youth Sport Coaches |
President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition
Organized sports programs are among the most popular activities in which children and youth participate. More than 40 million children ages 18 and under take part in these programs.1 Moreover, children and youth are profoundly affected by sports, which influence them physically, psychologically, and emotionally.2 Children who take part in youth sport programs are guided by coaches, many of whom are untrained volunteers.3 Researchers have shown that coaches have a great influence on the experiences and outcomes of children and youth who participate in sports.5

Then, it examines America's youth sport coaches-who they are, their educational needs, how they learn to coach-as well as evidence on the efficacy of coaching education programs and the key principles for effective youth coach development. Regular Breaks From Sedentary Time Found to Improve Children's Health |
Education Week
It's not exactly breaking news that large amounts of sedentary time tend to have negative effects when it comes to a child's health.
The simple act of regularly interrupting sedentary time by standing up, on the other hand, could have beneficial effects for children, according to a study published last week in the open-access online journal PLOS ONE.
Researchers analyzed data from 522 children from Quebec, Canada, between the ages of 8 and 11 (286 boys and 236 girls), all of whom had at least one biological parent with a body mass index of 30 or greater. Each child used an accelerometer for seven days to track when he or she was engaging in light or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and when he or she was sedentary. The children self-reported how much time they spent watching television and playing video games or using a computer. MORE

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
| This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart! To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).
Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association. These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues. Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.
How It Works.... JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers. They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school. Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:
- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event. - Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event. - Tips for fundraising. Participants ask friends and family for donations. The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier! - Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.
But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store. Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.
With your support, we can help protect and improve children's health! Sign up today!
