New PE Standards & Outcomes Offer More Guidance Than Ever Before
AAHPERD
Physical education teachers across the country now have access to the fundamental tools they need to provide their students with quality physical education programs.   AAHPERD is proud to announce that the new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education are now posted on-line.

In addition to the listing of the National Standards you will find grade-level outcomes-benchmarks that identify what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade.  They provide a roadmap that PE teachers can use to track students' progress toward becoming a "physically literate individual," which is the goal for all of the five new National Standards.

Click here to download a flyer listing the new National Standards for K-12 Physical Education.

Click here to download an extensive chart that details grade-specific outcomes for students under the new National Standards.
Important Updates on the Teacher Evaluation Process

NJAHPERD recommends that you review the article that appeared in the second edition of MOMENTUM, the new newsletter of the AAHPERD, Fall 2013 entitled: Please Share with Your Principal "What's going on in the gym?" Three Things to Look for When Evaluating Physical Education Teachers. Please share this with your colleagues and administrators.

The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples.

We are pleased to announce the following National Teachers of the Year will be presenting at the Annual Convention.

Patty Kestell (Wisconsin) - National Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Charla Tedder Parker (North Carolina) - National High School Teacher of the Year.

Shellie Pfohl, the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will be the featured speaker at the Opening Session on Monday, February 24, 2014.

Shellie  was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation.

Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, will present YOU DON'T KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME, a one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.

Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

IOM: Whole-school approach recommended for physical activity
Healio
An Institute of Medicine report shared at Obesity Week 2013 gives many recommendations for schools to best approach the physical health of students, including making physical education part of the core curriculum. "Schools have played a role in child health for a long time in terms of vaccines, nutrition and other aspects," Dr. Nicolas Stettler, a member of the Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment, said in an interview with Endocrine Today. The IOM report specifically recommended preservice training and professional development for teachers in the area of physical education.  MORE
Survey: 40 percent of Americans support ban on youth tackle football
Village Voice
Recently, ESPN reported that Pop Warner football participation dropped by around 10 percent from 2010 to 2012. The abrupt decline - which followed decades of nonstop growth and comes at a time when the NFL is as popular as it has ever been - suggests that evidence of football's long-term harm on the brain has convinced many parents to pull their sons from the sport, at least at the youth level. Nearly 40 percent of Americans support a ban on kids playing tackle football before high school, according to a new survey by the Robert Morris University Polling Institute. Eleven percent were unsure.  MORE
Dance concert celebrates football
Kennesaw State University via Kennesaw Patch
Football and dance aren't usually mentioned in the same sentence - other than homecoming - but both are featured prominently - and work well together - in the upcoming production of "Touchdown" by Kennesaw State University's Department of Dance. Wonder how football and dance came together on the stage? Ivan Pulinkala, department chair and choreographer of the namesake piece, said, "There's a lot of overlap between athletics and dance: both emphasize kinesthetic training. The announcement of the start of football at KSU presented the perfect opportunity to celebrate our synergies." MORE
Too much exercise 'as bad as too little'
Telegraph
Too much exercise could be as bad as getting none at all, according to researchers who found that those who exercised for more than 14 hours per week were in worse health. While playing more sports generally has a positive impact on mental and physical wellbeing, researchers found that the benefits begin to decline after a certain threshold.  MORE
Should children play sports all year round?
The Associated Press via Houston Chronicle
More than 3.5 million children 14 and under are treated annually for sports injuries and the numbers are increasing. More than half of all youth sports injuries are preventable. In about half the cases, the injuries are associated with overuse, often linked with the growing trend of children specializing in one sport and playing year-round. Despite the warnings, the options to practice and play have exploded over the past decade. Competition now ratchets up before middle school, with select teams in clubs and leagues. Wherever you stand, parents with children who love sports are caught in the middle trying to make responsible choices. MORE

How teaching gratitude in school makes children happier
The Huffington Post
As Thanksgiving approaches, children may start hearing and thinking more about gratitude at school. Maybe they'll make handprint turkeys and write something they're thankful for on each feather or do something similar. Sure, it's a nice exercise but does being grateful really make a difference for children? Previous research clearly shows that it does. Practicing gratitude increases students' positive emotions and optimism, decreases their negative emotions and physical symptoms and makes them feel more connected and satisfied with school and with life in general.  MORE

Researchers: Rising pulse rates suggest children are less fit
Medpage Today
Resting pulse rates among preteens in the United Kingdom have increased over the last 30 years, suggesting a decline in overall fitness levels, researchers reported. The modest, but significant, increases were not explained by the precipitous weight gains among the age group over the same period and researchers warned that they could have important public health implications for future cardiovascular disease risk. Children today running much slower than kids 30 years ago
Mother Nature Network
Do you remember a childhood filled with running? Running around the playground, running while playing, running to your friend's house? Youthful scampering appears to be a lost art; childhood now seems more defined by sedentary activities, and in fact, a new study from Australia suggests the same. Grant Tomkinson from the University of South Australia's School of Health Sciences and his team analyzed 50 studies on running fitness between 1964 and 2010. Combined, they had data for more than 25 million children between the ages of 9 and 17 in 28 countries.  MORE

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart!  To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).

Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association.  These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues.  Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.

How It Works....
JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers.  They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school.  Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:

- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event.
- Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event.
- Tips for fundraising.  Participants ask friends and family for donations.  The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier!
- Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.

But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store.  Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.

With your support, we can help protect and improve children's health!  Sign up today!
