A message from your president |
THANK YOU!
I thank all of you who attended and stopped by our NJAHPERD affiliate booth at the 2013 NJEA Convention. We tried to answer many of your questions, distributed many hand-outs, signed up new members and renewed memberships for both professionals and future professionals. We also teamed up with the American Heart Association to sign-up schools who expressed an interest in getting involved with Jump Rope and/or Hoops for Heart programs. This is the 35th year of the AHA program and one which has become a big part of our quality physical education and health education programs promoting healthy lifestyles.
We also had lots of action from our 14 sponsored workshops and at least 20 other physical education, health and wellness programs. I thank you all for preparing and presenting on behalf of NJAHPERD at the NJEA Convention. Each and every one of you made a difference.
Also, please thank the teachers in your individual schools for collecting handouts for you if you were unable to attend. We also had many classroom teachers stop by because they were interested in becoming a part of the "Let's Move! Active Schools" program and how "Brain Breaks" would be able to help them in their individual classrooms.
All in all, it warms my heart to know NJAHPERD does make a huge difference for so many people in our school systems and communities.
If you are interested in being a presenter at the 2014 NJEA Convention, please contact Diane Glover, NJAHPERD NJEA Liaison at Diane's email. The 2014 theme will focus on the Common Core Content Standards and proposals need to be submitted by early March, 2014.
Last, but surely not least, please join me at our upcoming Health Education Conference, "Healthy Horizons" on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Monroe. The conference is the best one in the state for K-12 teachers and nurses who also teach health.
Best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

New PE Standards & Outcomes Offer More Guidance Than Ever Before |
AAHPERD
Physical education teachers across the country now have access to the fundamental tools they need to provide their students with quality physical education programs. AAHPERD is proud to announce that the new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education are now posted on-line.
In addition to the listing of the National Standards you will find grade-level outcomes-benchmarks that identify what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. They provide a roadmap that PE teachers can use to track students' progress toward becoming a "physically literate individual," which is the goal for all of the five new National Standards.
Click here to download a flyer listing the new National Standards for K-12 Physical Education.
Click here to download an extensive chart that details grade-specific outcomes for students under the new National Standards. |
Important Updates on the Teacher Evaluation Process |
NJAHPERD recommends that you review the article that appeared in the second edition of MOMENTUM, the new newsletter of the AAHPERD, Fall 2013 entitled: Please Share with Your Principal "What's going on in the gym?" Three Things to Look for When Evaluating Physical Education Teachers. Please share this with your colleagues and administrators.
The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples. |

2014 Annual Convention
National Teachers of the Year
We are pleased to announce the following National Teachers of the Year will be presenting at the Annual Convention.
Patty Kestell (Wisconsin) - National Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Charla Tedder Parker (North Carolina) - National High School Teacher of the Year.
Shellie Pfohl, the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will be the featured speaker at the Opening Session on Monday, February 24, 2014.
Shellie was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation.
Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, will present YOU DON'T KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME, a one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.
Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.
SPARK Wednesday Webinar Series...ARCHIVED webinars
When: Wednesday, November 20th Time: 6pm Eastern
Cost: Free Students come to us with different backgrounds, experiences and skill levels. If we want each child to learn, be actively engaged, and experience success, we cannot use the same content and instruction on everyone. It is important to modify the activities we teach and create environments where all students are challenged and ultimately, improve their health. But how?
We can improve opportunities for students to practice and develop their unique skills, use different teaching strategies so students can learn and participate at a level they feel comfortable with, and improve fitness by allowing more time for movement activities.
Join us for the next SPARK Webinar to learn how to apply inclusionary strategies and differentiate activities to engage all students. You'll leave with the tools and resources you need to create activity sessions that foster individual success!

Make this the healthiest year yet... |
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation
Fall is officially here! The leaves are changing, the weather is becoming cooler, and school year is in full swing! Now is the perfect time to reenergize your School Wellness Councils and kick off a year of good health at your school. We are looking forward to another great school year working together to increase physical activity and healthy eating! Welcome, Sean Gustafson, our new NJ Program Manager! Sean has come to Alliance for a Healthier Generation from Teach for America where he worked most recently as an Event Marketing Manager for the national office, taking the lead on developing large alumni and community summits. Prior to that role, Sean was a Math Specialist and Program Director, training teachers in Philadelphia. He got his start as a middle school math teacher in Philadelphia. Sean is truly excited to work with teachers again and to help schools achieve positive changes with students, teachers and administrators.
Spotlight on our local Healthy Schools Program Ambassador
In August the Alliance for a Healthier Generation announced Jennifer Cedeno, Principal of Terence C. Reilly School No. 7 in the Elizabeth Public School District as a Healthy Schools Program Ambassador. Cedeno's passion for creating a healthy school environment has helped her school achieve a Gold National Recognition Award from the Alliance.
Nineteen leaders in the school health space were selected to join our Ambassadors Network. Our Ambassadors play a number of roles in and around schools. They are parents, principals, superintendents, child nutrition directors, coaches and teachers just to name a few. And they do this while also leading the change for health on their campus. Our Ambassadors have used the Healthy Schools Program in innovative ways to overcome common obstacles for school health and they are ready to help you do the same. Meet our 2013 - 2014 Healthy Schools Program Ambassadors and see how their experiences can help you make healthy changes at your school.

Society of Health and Physical Educators, America (SHAPE America) Gets My Vote |
Chuck Corbin, Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University
Roberta Park, a noted physical education historian, has suggested that physical education (and I would also include health education) can become the renaissance field of the 21st century. She makes the case that medicine was a fledgling field prior to 1900, but became the renaissance field of the 20th century. The development of the medical sciences, strong delivery programs (treatment, prevention, and promotion), strong medical training programs, and a strong professional organization were the keys. MORE

Thoughts about SHAPE America |
Steve Jefferies, pelinks4u Publisher
Since AAHPERD president Gale Wiedow announced the proposed new name for AAHPERD, similar to Chuck Corbin I've had mixed personal feelings and heard both positive and negative comments from others. But on one thing we can all agree. For our professional association to move forward it's pretty obvious that everything can't stay the same. So it makes sense that we should consider a new name.
As a former NASPE President I confess I'm pretty attached to the NASPE name and its public recognition as the professional association for physical educators. A few years ago our Canadian colleagues converted themselves to PHE Canada - a name that I also like but recognize that the thought of copying Canadians would be an anathema for many Americans! More recently, our nutrition colleagues renamed themselves to the daft sounding acronym "AND" yet it doesn't seem to have negatively affected their 75,000 and growing membership. MORE

Fitness vs. Academics: The PE Tug-of-War |
ParentMap.com
Like a lot of kids, I loved gym class growing up, but I recall it being a lesson in survival. We would go home wearing welts from rubber dodge balls - if I had knocked out a good number of classmates before getting hit myself, I considered it a good day. Friends remember the discomfort of kickball games when team captains picked their players one by one. The great relief was to not be that last little kid standing against the fence. MORE

Physical fitness linked to better memory |

A new study looked at the connection between physical fitness and mental fitness in adults of all ages. Participants' aerobic ability and brain function were tested several times over many years. The study found that physical fitness predicted people's ability to perform well on memory tests. Those who were more physically fit were less likely to miss questions on memory exams. MORE

Has bullying been normalized in sports? |
The Huffington Post
Recently, Richie Incognito, a Miami Dolphins NFL player, was suspended indefinitely for bullying his teammate, Jonathon Martin. We need to ask ourselves why the cries of Jonathon Martin took so long to hear. Where were his teammates, coaches and the rest of people in the Dolphins organization? While the players have a code of conduct to which they have to adhere, why did it take the actions of Jonathon Martin feeling like he had to quit before someone heard him. If we think that this is an isolated incident and only related to Richie Incognito and the Miami Dolphins, then we are blind to what is really going on in sport. MORE

AHA Jump Rope for Heart 35th Anniversary!
| This year is the 35th anniversary of Jump Rope For Heart! To do something significant and celebrate this milestone, the AHA challenges you to hold an event in your school and raise $3,500 (or more).
Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) and Hoops For Heart (HFH) are national education and fundraising events sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association. These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues. Both programs are great ways to satisfy the national physical education standards, and meet the criteria for a comprehensive school physical activity program.
How It Works.... JRFH or HFH events are conducted in school by physical education instructors, coaches or teachers. They can be scheduled whenever it's most convenient-during physical education class, lunch or before or after school. Once you register, you'll receive an event kit with everything you need to conduct a successful Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event:
- Step-by-step instructions on scheduling, promoting and conducting the event. - Heart-healthy curriculum to support heart awareness with the event. - Tips for fundraising. Participants ask friends and family for donations. The American Heart Association online tool makes raising funds even easier! - Training and support from an experienced American Heart Association staff person or volunteer.
But that's not all, schools that raise $3,500 or more and successfully complete their event will be entered to win a free registration to the 2015 AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA, including a travel and lodging stipend, and a $100 shopping spree in the AAHPERD online store. Schools will be eligible for the drawing as long as the event coordinator is a member of AAHPERD as of 5/1/14.
With your support, we can help protect and improve children's health! Sign up today!

4th Annual U Got Brains Champion Schools Program |
Deadline: Nov. 30, 2013
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is hosting its 4th Annual U Got Brains Champion Schools Program - a contest to challenge New Jersey high school students and a faculty advisor to create a unique project aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving. Schools receive a stipend to help develop teen driving safety programs and compete against other high schools to win cool prizes...including the grand prize-a driving simulator for their school. Deadline to apply is November 30th. APPLY
We need help from your school to spread awareness about safe teen driving to help reduce teen driving injuries and deaths! Here's how it works:
- Develop an idea in your school for a project related to teen driving safety based on the key safety issues provided.
- Submit your project name, a 500 word summary of the proposed project, and a list of strategies and events to be implemented along with it.
- If your school's project is selected, you will receive a stipend to implement it.
- Selected schools will have several months to implement their projects and compete against other schools to win the ultimate prize: a driving simulator
for your school! - Participating schools will take part in an evaluation conducted by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Research Institute.
Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen injuries and death and you have the power to help change that.
This is a great opportunity to engage your students in an educational, fun and interactive competition, while addressing an important safety issue. To quote a teacher advisor who has participated in this program for three straight years, "In 25 years of teaching, this is the best program I've ever been involved in!". We are looking for creative campaign ideas that will draw attention and make an impact on new drivers. Learn MORE and APPLY

I Am Sun Smart Contest - Win an iPad Air!! |
Deadline: Nov. 17, 2013
Let's face it: as parents and teachers, we can tell teens to wear sunscreen again and again, but our safety tips often go in one ear and out the other.
It's a fact that teens are more heavily influenced by their peers.
In order to educate teens about skin cancer prevention, The Skin Cancer Foundation created Sun Smart U, an interactive education program for middle and high school Health and Physical Education classrooms.
As an added bonus, we've developed a contest to further engage your students by inviting them to help spread the message about sun safety, in their own words, teen to teen. Together, we can help prevent skin cancer deaths and ensure that proper sun safety goes viral.
It's a win-win! The students who come up with the most creative ways to teach their friends about sun safety will win an iPad from the Skin Cancer Foundation. And the winning students' teachers will win prizes, too. Plus, the winning entries will be featured on the WeAreTeachers and Skin Cancer Foundation websites to help other students learn about the dangers of skin cancer. MORE |
