EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
 Are your students physically literate?
Joanne DohertyI hope that everyone got off to a great start in September and now you are all into the swing of your school's schedule.
The new 2013 AAHPERD National Standards: The Road to a Lifetime of Physical Activity and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education were recently announced and I wanted to make sure you are aware of the excellent resource.  The primary goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity and this resource will provide you with a "roadmap" to track progress towards that goal.
As health and physical educators we have the responsibility to address the standards and assist our students in becoming physically literate. It is very important that we take the lead and work across the curriculum with all our colleagues.  We need to advocate daily as we have the power to enhance benchmarks within our individual schools.  Please continue to work toward quality health education and physical education in your schools and engage your professional colleagues.
Take the time to read the article below and download the free resources.

Best wishes,

JoAnn Doherty

NJAHPERD President

New PE Standards & Outcomes Offer More Guidance Than Ever Before
AAHPERD
Physical education teachers across the country now have access to the fundamental tools they need to provide their students with quality physical education programs.   AAHPERD is proud to announce that the new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education are now posted on-line.

In addition to the listing of the National Standards you will find grade-level outcomes-benchmarks that identify what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade.  They provide a roadmap that PE teachers can use to track students' progress toward becoming a "physically literate individual," which is the goal for all of the five new National Standards.

Click here to download a flyer listing the new National Standards for K-12 Physical Education.

IMPORTANT UPDATES ON THE TEACHER EVALUATION PROCESS

NJAHPERD recommends that you review the article that appeared in the second edition of MOMENTUM, the new newsletter of the AAHPERD, Fall 2013 entitled: Please Share with Your Principal "What's going on in the gym?" Three Things to Look for When Evaluating Physical Education Teachers. Please share this with your colleagues and administrators.

The Physical Education Evaluation Tool, a Guidance Document was developed by NASPE identifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to provide sound instruction in the K-12 physical education classroom. Its purpose is to assist principals, school district curriculum specialists, and others who evaluate physical education teachers as well as to guide physical education teachers in reflection and self assessment, and serve as an instructional tool in college/university physical education teacher education program. Please pay specific attention to pages 9 through 14 as they will be very useful in helping formulate ideas for your SGO's with specific examples.

2014 Annual Convention SNEAK PEEK!

National Teachers of the Year

We are pleased to announce the following National Teachers of the Year will be presenting at the Annual Convention.

Patty Kestell (Wisconsin) - National Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Jessica Shawley (Indiana) - National Middle School Teacher of the Year

Charla Tedder Parker (North Carolina) - National High School Teacher of the Year.

Shellie Pfohl, the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will be the featured speaker at the Opening Session on Monday, February 24, 2014.

Shellie  was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation.

Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, will present YOU DON'T KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME, a one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.

Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.

Comedy Night & Social

Prepare for an evening of sheer entertainment! Plan to stay overnight at Ocean Place on Monday night and join us for a comedy show featuring several professional comedians, DJ, raffles, refreshments and much more! Something different after a full day of great professional development!

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education

ARCHIVED

Cost: Free

Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.

Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

Physical activity in schools is essential to reversing childhood obesity
The Huffington Post
For those working to reverse the trend in childhood obesity, there is significant cause for excitement. After three decades of steady increases, obesity rates have, for the first time, remained level in nearly every state in the nation. The news, reported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is indeed cause for celebration. However, the current obesity statistics, particularly those among children, remain dramatic and concerning. This could mean that the current generation of children may live shorter lives than their parents - a first in this nation's history. MORE
Professor: Active children do better in class

If children are more active during their school day, they perform better academically, Darla Castelli told more than 200 participants in a Summit for Healthy Children. Missoula, Mont., is ahead of the curve when it comes to promoting healthy lifestyles for kids, said Castelli, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. MORE

Fitness vs. academics: The PE tug of war
Parent Map
In its 2012 Shape of the Nation Report, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education finds that the more balanced approach to physical education not only makes it a better experience for the less athletic student, it dramatically expands the skills - including academic ones - that each participant gains: social, cooperative and problem solving skills, as well as tools for self assessment and decision making. "The benefits of physical education extend outside the gym or playing field and across a student's entire education experience," the report states. MORE

Federal regulations on school cafeteria meals ignore risk of too much sugar
Center for Investigative Reporting
Almost everything about a school cafeteria meal has a regulation. The federal government caps the amount of fat and salt in breakfasts and lunches. It sets minimum standards for servings of fruit, vegetables, grains, milk and meat. But one widely used and often-overused product has no official limits: sugar. As Congress faces increased scrutiny over subsidies to the sugar industry, nutritionists and antiobesity crusaders are focusing on the amount of sugar in school meals - and asking whether regulations governing school lunches deliberately exclude limits on sugar to favor a powerful industry. RESEARCH

Obesity, regardless of social background, influences school performance
Stone Hearth News
Children who are extremely overweight achieve lower math grades and attend German upper secondary school physical education less frequently, is shown by a study, undertaken by the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. For the first time, it has been proven that obesity, regardless of the students social background, influences school performance. Previously, it was only known that people with lower education had a tendency to suffer from weight issues. In Germany, 15 percent of children and young people between the ages 3-17 are overweight and about 6 percent are obese. MORE
The link between physical fitness and academic success
The New York Times
Having recently wrapped up National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September, research demonstrating the positive effects of physical activity in children on their performance in school could not be more appropriately timed. It has already been widely accepted that exercise helps sharpen the ability of kids to pay attention and settle down in school or at home. But until recently, no studies had investigated the impact that physical fitness might have on the way children learn. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign decided to tackle this difficult question and ultimately found that physical fitness has a greater impact on comprehension and retention the more difficult something is to learn. Let's Move Active Schools
Become a Champion TODAY!

We know that you are facing all sorts of challenges and balancing multiple priorities, while striving to do every single thing you can to help your students learn and grow.

Let's Move! Active Schools is designed to address these challenges by spurring innovative solutions and offering customized support every step of the way.  We know that our kids need 60 minutes of physical activity daily, not only so they can grow up healthy, but also because we know it helps them succeed in school.  That's why this program empowers schools to find free or low-cost ways to incorporate movement before, during, and after the school day.  We'll help connect schools to grant opportunities, online resources, personal assistance, and hands-on professional development.

There's just one thing we're still missing-YOU, the CHAMPION! The one dedicated person to step up and start making a difference.

All you have to do is sign up at LetsMoveSchools.org and follow a simple, six-step process to create an active school environment and build support among leadership, staff, families, and other community members.  Along the way, you'll have access to free tools and resources to help you take action.

KaBOOM! Accepting Applications for Community Playground Construction Grants
Deadline: Project specific, time-sensitive
KaBOOM!, in partnership with Dr. Pepper Snapple, is accepting applications for grants to be used toward the purchase of playground equipment. To be eligible for a Let's Play Community Construction grant, playgrounds must be assembled using the KaBOOM! community-build model, and progress must be documented through KaBOOM!'s Our Dream Playground project planner.

Municipalities and child-serving organizations without a playground or with existing equipment that is unsafe for children are eligible for this opportunity. The grant cannot be used to add equipment to an existing playground.

The program provides a $15,000 grant award that must be applied toward the purchase of equipment from a KaBOOM! preferred vendor; access to valuable planning tools on the Our Dream Playground Web site; opportunity to receive one-on-one planning support from KaBOOM! alumni; and post-build access to the KaBOOM! Alumni Network, through which grantees may apply for additional grants to maintain and/or expand their playspace, as well as opportunities to learn more about the state of play in the United States.

Applicants must own the land on which the playground is built or have permission to build there, spend $24,000 to $40,000 on playground equipment, agree to finish the project within twelve months of the grant award, and serve a low-income population.
