A message from your president |
I hope you all had a great start to the school year and that you are taking the time to reflect and set your goals for the year for your individual programs. Included in the goals for the year should be participation in professional development events. Did you receive the "Save the Dates" postcard in your school mailbox? NJAHPERD leadership has worked diligently to schedule as many opportunities so that our members have choices of content, location and dates. We hope you will be able to attend at least one PD workshop/conference, as well as the Annual Convention. All workshops/conferences give us a chance to grow in our profession and bring new ideas back to our schools and programs. I believe it also gives us an additional opportunity to network with our colleagues from other schools and districts to be able to share our ideas and thoughts. I truly look forward to seeing and talking with you at one or more of these programs throughout the year. Postcard
I would also like to follow up on Fitnessgram and SGOs. Although it may seem like fitness scores are the easiest way to evaluate your effectiveness as a teacher, the easy way is not the best way! There is misguidance regarding the appropriate use of fitness assessments as an SGO. At NJAHPERD's request, AAHPERD Senior Director of Communications, Paula Kun, and the Cooper Institute have created a document to help you understand the appropriate uses of Fitnessgram. Please take the time to read WHAT EVERY PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THE APPROPRIATE USES OF FITNESSGRAM and forward it to your supervisor/principal. I am confident that you will find it to be a valuable tool in improving your student's health and fitness. Additional documents are available on the NJAHPERD website under the NJ Legislation/AchieveNJ tab.
NJAHPERD encourages you to embrace TEACHNJ and the evaluation process. If your program measures up as a high quality program, the task of creating SGOs that address all of the NJCCCS should not be difficult. Ask your students after every lesson: What did you learn that will help you lead a healthy, active life today and in the future?
I look forward to seeing you at one of NJAHPERD's fall conferences/workshops. Please encourage your non-member colleagues to attend with you so they too can benefit from NJAHPERD membership. NJAHPERD is committed to providing the best quality professional development so that you can have the most impact on the quality of your instruction and student's learning within your district. We need the 7000 non - members to be involved, so that all our programs are quality programs. Please use our QR Code and register today.
Best wishes,
JoAnn Doherty

Proposal submission deadline EXTENDED to September 30th! We know the start of school is a very stressful time, so we have extended the deadline for convention proposal submission for 2 more weeks. This is your chance to "give back" and share your quality program ideas with other professionals.Speakers receive a complimentary registration the day of their presentation. Yes, a FREE registration! Interested? Read on.....
The convention will be held at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa on the beachfront in Long Branch, NJ on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, February 23 - 25, 2014. By featuring you and your peers as presenters, NJAHPERD provides convention attendees with the strongest forum for information exchange, problem solving, and networking on the state level. MORE
2014 Annual Convention SNEAK PEEK!
Shellie Pfohl, the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will be the featured speaker at the Opening Session on Monday, February 24, 2014.
Shellie was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation.
Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, will present YOU DON'T KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME, a one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.
Mykee is no stranger to the stage and has been formally acting since age 11. It all started by creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University, in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people.
Comedy Night & Social
Prepare for an evening of sheer entertainment! Plan to stay overnight at Ocean Place on Monday night and join us for a comedy show featuring several professional comedians, DJ, raffles, refreshments and much more! Something different after a full day of great professional development! |

WEBINARS:
School Health Assessments: A Road Map for Improving Your School's Health Policies & Practices Date: Tues, Sept 17
Time: 3pm EST

We all know healthy students are better learners. So how can we ensure we're providing them with an environment that facilitates and encourages healthy behavior on a daily basis? We're excited to bring together representatives from the three leading school health assessments/inventories as guest speakers for this webinar, including Seraphine Pitt Barnes (Division of Population Health, School Health Branch, CDC), Sean Slade (Director, Whole Child Programs, ASCD) and Sarah Titzer (Healthy Schools Program Director, Alliance for a Healthier Generation).

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

Cheers To Water: First Lady Michelle Obama Asks Everyone to "Drink Up" With More Water! |
Let's Move!
First Lady Michelle Obama joined the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) and actress Eva Longoria to announce PHA's new effort to encourage everyone to drink more water.
According to the CDC, approximately one in four kids does not drink any water on a given day. Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to improve overall health and well-being and helps you have more energy and better focus. The campaign kicked off in Watertown, WI encouraging Americans to "Drink Up". It's a simple action that everyone can take. Mrs. Obama led a toast to water followed by an array of festival-like water games at Watertown High School. MORE

Is your child getting enough physical activity? |
USA Today
If anyone had asked our moms if their children were getting enough physical activity, they would've laughed. "Of course!" But today's increasingly sedentary lifestyle leaves many kids short on the exercise and play time they need to protect their health. According to a May 2012 Institute of Medicine report, only about half of America's kids and teens get enough activity to meet current guidelines. How can you tell if your child is active enough? Not your grandmother's gym class |
Reuters via Yahoo
Physical Education in the United States has come a long way since the one-size-fits-all regimen of jumping jacks and rope climbing that was the bane of the baby boomer generation. Today, where children learn can determine the type of fitness lessons they receive. "We have schools with rock climbing walls, Zumba classes, inline skating - amazing stuff that I would have loved to have when I was a kid," said Carly Braxton, senior program manager for advocacy at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, a nonprofit group that promotes physical activity and education. Physical education trend must be reversed |
The Huffington Post (Blog)
Ken Reed writes, "In an era of near epidemic childhood obesity, our schools need to reverse their priorities in this area and focus on creating more physical education, intramural sports and other physical activity opportunities for the student body at large. Varsity sports programs should be a secondary consideration in schools that exist for educational purposes. Schools shouldn't be in the business of developing elite-level athletes while the majority of students within their walls are becoming increasingly inactive. Bottom line: Our children need to move more and watch less." MORE |
Report: Time to update school PE programs |
The State Journal-Register
An effort is underway to update physical education programs in Illinois public schools. An Illinois state task force released a 148-page report that it submitted to Gov. Pat Quinn. The report calls for new strategies for P.E. programs to raise the emphasis on individual lifetime fitness and lessen the prominence of competitive sports. The report notes that research links physical activity with improved academic performance. MORE |
CDC reveals positive physical education trends over past decade |
Education Week
Since the turn of the millennium, the proportion of states and districts paying closer heed to students' physical fitness has increased significantly, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control. The "2012 School Health Policies and Practices Study" found that the percentage of districts requiring elementary schools to teach physical education increased by more than 10 percentage points over the past 12 years. In 2000, 82.6 percent of districts required physical education in elementary schools; by 2012, that figure jumped to 93.6 percent of districts. MORE |
New concussion guidelines say, 'When in doubt, sit it out' |
The Buffalo News
New guidelines for recognizing and managing sports-related concussions could help protect the brains of millions of athletes at all levels of play, from professional football to youth soccer. The guidelines were released earlier this year by the American Academy of Neurology. They step away from trying to "grade" concussions or diagnose them on the field or sidelines. Instead, they focus on immediately removing from play athletes who are suspected of having a concussion until they can be evaluated. Here are some of the AAN's findings and recommendation. MORE |

'Fat letters' have young children worried about their weight |
ABC News
A growing initiative by some schools across the country has students and parents up in arms: The schools are measuring students at an annual weigh-in and sending reports home telling parents whether their child's body mass index is healthy or dangerous. Schools in 19 states, from Arkansas to Illinois, participate in the annual student weigh-ins. Some pediatricians say body mass index readings are helpful in combating childhood obesity, which is a growing problem. But some eating disorder experts worry that taking the readings may do more harm than good. MORE |
Fast food: Students struggle with healthy options in short lunch periods |
Center for Investigative Reporting
For schools to receive federal reimbursement for lunches, they must serve - not just offer - each student at least a half-cup of fruit or vegetables. Lunches also must include servings of at least two other foods, such as a protein and a grain. The requirement, adopted in the last school year, is part of an effort to serve students healthier foods. And eating those foods takes time - more time than many students have. National school and health organizations and some states, including California, recommend that students have at least 20 minutes to eat lunch after they're served. But that's not happening in many schools. MORE |
5 percent of US children, teens considered 'severely obese' |
NBC News
Overall obesity rates for American kids may have leveled off, but a new report finds that children and teens at the far end of the spectrum are getting heavier, faster - with about 5 percent now classified as "severely obese." That means nearly 4 million U.S. youth fall into a new category of obesity risk, one that carries dangers of serious disease and early death, even beyond expected harms, according to a scientific statement published by the American Heart Association. Study: Every minute of physical activity really does count |
WITN-TV
A new study suggests something encouraging for busy people: Every minute of movement counts toward the 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity we're all supposed to be getting each week. Welcome Back!
Welcome back to the beginning of another school year! On behalf of NJAHPERD, I would like to extend my "heart-felt" appreciation for your continued support of the American Heart Association and its programming.
By choosing to conduct a Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event, and utilizing the AHA educational components, you are providing your students with the tools needed to learn the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and physical activity. At the same time, you are teaching them the valuable lesson of community service and
showcasing positive components of character education. The dollars raised through their fundraising efforts are helping the American Heart Association in their ongoing efforts to combat cardiovascular disease and stroke and to provide educational resources for us all.
New Jersey AHPERD's overall success of both JRFH and HFH events included 818 recruited schools-second only to NYSAHPERD in our "Founder's Affiliate." Despite many of our state's obvious challenges last year, over 88% of registered schools completed a JR/HFH or combined event which truly demonstrates the partnership between AHA and AHPERD. NJAHPERD will receive a total of $80,885.28 to sustain its programming and services to the membership.
There is still so much funding and research to be done as cardiovascular disease continues to affect so many families and loved ones. If you are aware of any school that is NOT currently participating in either JUMP or HOOPS, please encourage them to "reach out" to their regional AHA contact to arrange for an in-school visit.
As a thank you for your continued support of the American Heart Association's mission to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke, please note that (NATIONAL) AAHPERD is again offering a FREE one year membership to all coordinators who complete an AHA event that totals $1,000 or more. (see Coordinator Updates) ALSO, your NJAHPERD membership will be discounted by 50%. Simply indicate the date you completed an event on the top of your membership application and upon validation, your discount will be applied electronically at the NJAHPERD office.
Again, thank you for all you do in promoting HEART HEALTH and PHYSICAL ACTIVITY! Here's to a great 2013-2014 school year!
All the best,
Christine Baccarella

REINVENTING DRIVER EDUCATION:Educators partner with statewide coalition to breathe new life into a high school staple |
NJEA Review
Ask a teenager, "what's the first thing you'll need to do to obtain a driver's license," and he's likely to respond, "take driver's ed. " A staple in most New Jersey high schools for decades, driver education is considered the primary means by which all new drivers learn the rules of the road and basic vehicle operation. Driving, however, has changed dramatically since motorists first took to the road. Has driver education kept pace?
Yes and no, according to driver education teachers who responded to a statewide needs assessment conducted late last year by the New Jersey Teen Safe Driving Coalition (www.nsc.org/njteens-gdl4u). The coalition, a partnership of the National Safety Council and The Allstate Foundation, learned that while teachers are discussing "modern-day" topics like distracted driving and the state's novice driver licensing program referred to as "GDL" (Graduated Driver Licensing), the curriculum and how it's delivered hasn't changed much since these same teachers were students.
