A note from your editor... |
3, 2, 1...and we're off!
Welcome to your 2013-14 school year! I would like to thank all those readers who took the time at the end of the 2012/13 school year to respond to our FYI Reader Survey. The results were extremely positive with almost 100% of responders stating they were satisfied or very satisfied with FYI! I have tried to incorporate as many of the requested changes as I could (although there were not many) including moving the PD Events to the top of the email.
This e-newsletter is your resource. If ever you have a comment or suggestion, please do not hesitate to share it with me.
Wishing you a most successful, active, fit and healthy year,
Suzette de Araujo

A message from your president |
Quality Programs & Quality Assessments My Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a very productive, rewarding, and fun filled summer break.
As the new school year begins, we can expect changes and challenges as our profession embraces the requirements for AchieveNJ and the evaluation process. This is our opportunity to validate the importance of our programs. As you begin to develop your Student Growth Objectives (SGO) for the year, keep in mind that SGOs will assist you to keep focused on what your students should be learning so that they have the knowledge and skills to live a healthy, active life. NJAHPERD is committed to providing resources and professional development opportunities to help you reach your professional goals.
The primary purpose of an SGO is a long term academic goal that teachers set for groups of students. SGOs must be:
- Specific and measurable
- Aligned to New Jersey's Core Curriculum Standards
- Based on available prior student learning data
- Ambitious but achievable.
In physical education some examples of assessment could be:
- Performance Assessment: skills demonstration
- Portfolio Assessment: Portfolio of student work
- Student project-based work
- Log/comparison of workouts
- Traditional Assessment: Department tests (skills tests, exit questions)
Additional examples of assessments for Health and Physical Education will be posted on the NJDOE website under Model Curriculum and examples of SGOs will be listed on the NJAHPERD website in the next few weeks.
NJAHPERD's position is that fitness assessments alone should NOT be used as an SGO. Our NJCCCS include much more than fitness. This has been discussed at all NJAHPERD FitnessGram training workshops, listed in the FitnessGram Manual, on the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP) website and the NJAHPERD website. FitnessGram is a health-related, criterion-based assessment, which means it helps minimize comparisons between children and instead supports students as they pursue personal fitness goals for life long health.
What Fitnessgram is NOT?
- Part of a summative assessment (NO GRADES)
- Method of determining teacher effectiveness (not to be used as an SGO)
- Competitive activity: Teacher to teacher, school to school, district to district, state to state
- Information for public display.
You can find additional information to support this position on the NJAHPERD website.
Please keep in mind when you do your Professional Improvement Plans (PIP) that you should plan on attending NJAHPERD's professional workshops/conferences during the year, as well as our Annual Convention on February 23-25, 2014. Every presenter is required to provide an assessment piece to help you with your SGOs within your physical education programs.
When I took office as President in February 2013 at the NJAHPERD Convention, I stated to all who were in attendance "Ask not what NJAHPERD can do for you, but what you can do for NJAHPERD." As NJAHPERD starts its 95th year as an Association, I ask you again to be an "Advocate on the Move" and engage a non-member colleague in discussion of the importance of professional membership. You will be receiving a postcard in the next few days listing professional development events. Please share it with your colleagues and register for as many PD events as your district will allow. Use our new QR CODE to register online.
I am looking forward to working with you in a very challenging year ahead but I know together as a team we will come out as the "CHAMPIONS" we all are.
Best wishes and enjoy the rest of your time prior to opening day,
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD President

Raising Awareness for Quality Physical Education
ARCHIVED
Cost: Free
Physical education (PE) programs are being reduced or eliminated because of budget reductions or the mistaken assumption that less PE time will result in higher academic test scores. Despite all the evidence supporting hte need for quality PE in schools (including academic improvement), teachers still find themselves having to defend their program from elimination.
Have you found yourself in this position? Or do you just want to advocate for quality PE in your child's school or as a proven solution to our national childhood obesity epidemic? Attend our webinar (next week!) and learn about strategies and resources to help advocate for Quality PE wherever you are.

The new role of physical education |
Wisconsin School News
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Keith Bakken, executive director of Wisconsin Health and Physical Education says we need good physical education programs in Wisconsin. "Physical education is an academic subject," Bakken said. "It's more than learning how to play volleyball." MORE |

New Jersey school district to welcome inaugural 'Academy' class at high school |
The Jersey Journal
As summer vacation draws to a close, the Bayonne Board of Education in New Jersey is putting the finishing touches on the newly renovated "academy wing" of Bayonne High School, which will soon be home to the Bayonne Academy for Fine Arts and Academics. The new academy will take 200 incoming freshmen and place them in a program with a specialized curriculum, focusing either on fine arts, including visual arts, music and dance, or on an accelerated academics tract made up entirely of honors and advanced placement courses. Games prove to be winning fitness motivators |
San Francisco Chronicle
After years of failed attempts at self-motivation, it was an app that finally got Sally Albert out of bed and exercising every morning. The app featured a cutesy cartoon bird whose health and well-being hinged on her own physical activity. If she got up and went for that walk in the morning, the bird thrived, zipping across the screen and sometimes even singing. MORE

How should physical education class be graded? |
Parents
Karen Cicero writes, "From kindergarten to fifth grade, my daughter has always received the highest mark possible in gym class. You might think she's an athlete. Awesome at sports. Plays on a team. Actually, none of the above. While she rocks at hula-hoop and dance - and likes to swim and bike too - he's not so hot at some of the regular gym activities, like basketball, long jump, or even soccer. I simply assumed that her gym grade reflected her willingness to try, preparation for class, and good behavior. And until a couple of months ago, I thought that her teacher's grading philosophy was the norm. But in an informal poll of my friends and family, getting a high grade in gym is far from a given." Teen health problems linked to BPA, phthalates |
Mother Nature Network
The chemicals bisphenol A and phthalates are linked to obesity and insulin resistance in adolescents in two new studies, but the findings cannot yet answer whether the hotly debated hormone-like compounds are causing the negative health effects they are linked with, experts say. In one study, the researchers measured the levels of DEHP, a phthalate found in processed foods, in the urine of 766 adolescents ages 12 to 19. They found that teens with higher amounts of DEHP in their urine had increased rates of insulin resistance, a condition that can lead to Type 2 diabetes. MORE |
Obesity kills more Americans than we thought |
CNN
Just days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released statistics showing promise in the fight against childhood obesity, another study suggests the American public health system shouldn't be celebrating quite yet. While new statistics show childhood obesity rates in the United States are dropping, obesity in adults still accounts for 18 percent of deaths among black or white Americans between ages 40 and 85, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers say that's approximately 1 in 5 black or white Americans who are dying from illnesses related to obesity. MORE |
Nutrition: Best to eat before and after exercise |
The Washington Post
The body needs fuel to perform. But what fuel? And when? These are the questions many of us ask ourselves as we get ready for a long run or finish up an hour in the weight room. "You wouldn't expect your car to run on an empty tank, right? Same thing with your body. If you want to perform well, you have to fuel well," says Mansur Mendizabal, a Washington, D.C.-based fitness trainer and owner of www.mansurtraining.com. This means giving your body the carbohydrates and protein it needs. MORE

Getting kids involved with packing lunch teaches nutrition, responsibility |
The Frederick News-Post
Good news, parents - letting your children make their own lunches is not only convenient for you, it's good for them. But, they may need some guidance at first. Dietitian Amy Goldsmith recommends that children in second grade and younger have parental oversight when packing their lunches but, by third grade, they should be able to handle the task. By getting the kids involved early, she said, they are able to learn which healthy foods they like best and build good habits for the rest of their lives. MORE

Welcome Back!
Welcome back to the beginning of another school year! On behalf of NJAHPERD, I would like to extend my "heart-felt" appreciation for your continued support of the American Heart Association and its programming.
By choosing to conduct a Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart event, and utilizing the AHA educational components, you are providing your students with the tools needed to learn the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and physical activity. At the same time, you are teaching them the valuable lesson of community service and
showcasing positive components of character education. The dollars raised through their fundraising efforts are helping the American Heart Association in their ongoing efforts to combat cardiovascular disease and stroke and to provide educational resources for us all.
New Jersey AHPERD's overall success of both JRFH and HFH events included 818 recruited schools-second only to NYSAHPERD in our "Founder's Affiliate." Despite many of our state's obvious challenges last year, over 88% of registered schools completed a JR/HFH or combined event which truly demonstrates the partnership between AHA and AHPERD. NJAHPERD will receive a total of $80,885.28 to sustain its programming and services to the membership.
There is still so much funding and research to be done as cardiovascular disease continues to affect so many families and loved ones. If you are aware of any school that is NOT currently participating in either JUMP or HOOPS, please encourage them to "reach out" to their regional AHA contact to arrange for an in-school visit.
As a thank you for your continued support of the American Heart Association's mission to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke, please note that (NATIONAL) AAHPERD is again offering a FREE one year membership to all coordinators who complete an AHA event that totals $1,000 or more. (see Coordinator Updates) ALSO, your NJAHPERD membership will be discounted by 50%. Simply indicate the date you completed an event on the top of your membership application and upon validation, your discount will be applied electronically at the NJAHPERD office.
Again, thank you for all you do in promoting HEART HEALTH and PHYSICAL ACTIVITY! Here's to a great 2013-2014 school year!
All the best,
Christine Baccarella
