Institute of Medicine: Kids need daily hour of physical activity, PE should be core subject
|
The Washington Post
The prestigious Institute of Medicine is recommending that schools provide opportunities for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day for students and that PE become a core subject.
The report, released Thursday, says only about half of the nation's youngsters are getting at least an hour of vigorous or moderate-intensity physical activity every day.
Another concern, the report says, is that 44 percent of school administrators report slashing big chunks of time from physical education, arts and recess since the passage of the No Child Left Behind law in 2001 in order to boost classroom time for reading and math. MORE

Elementary school's morning workouts linked to better test scores
|
sctimes.com
As the sound system pounds out "Glad You Came" by The Wanted, the doors to the modest gymnasium at Sope Creek Elementary School fly open and children come streaming into the room, racing to take their place among the line dancers.
Suddenly there are 75 third-, fourth- and fifth-graders twisting, bending, lunging and hopping their way through a 20-minute set of dance tunes. When the set ends at 8:15 the children stretch, then head back to class.
There is an obesity epidemic harming American children. Childhood obesity rates are double and triple what they were back in the 1950s, when the President's Council on Youth Fitness was founded. Children are not only fatter, they are weaker. MORE

Longer physical education periods reduce childhood obesity |
Medical Daily
Critics of physical education in schools, get over it - Michelle Obama knows what's good for you. More time in gym class actually does reduce the likelihood that young children will become obese, according to a new study published in the Journal of Health Economics. The findings are some of the first evidence that physical education directly impacts the weight of elementary school children, researchers say. MORE |
New study recommends using active videogaming to improve children's health |
Stone Hearth News
Levels of physical inactivity and obesity are very high in children, with fewer than 50 percent of primary school-aged boys and fewer than 28 percent of girls meeting the minimum levels of physical activity required to maintain health. Exergaming - using active console video games that track player movement to control the game (e.g., Xbox-Kinect, Wii) - has become popular and may provide an alternative form of exercise to counteract sedentary behaviors. In a study to be published in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers studied the effects of exergaming on children. MORE |
Project Dance champions dance education in schools |
Haddonfield-Haddon Township Patch
Imagine a future where most high school course selections included dance. That's right: reading, writing, arithmetic and dance. Project dance is an integrative dance festival in which professional choreographers, teachers, young dancers and local musicians collaborate to create an evening of entertainment and self-expression. It supports the inclusion of dance in school curriculums and raises funds for scholarship awards to high school seniors pursuing dance or musical theatre degrees. MORE |
Students split on Illinois school's divided PE curriculum |
Chicago Tribune
It's known as the "lower" PE class but some students at one northwest Chicago suburban high school simply call it "fat gym." Officials at the Mount Prospect school say the approach, which PE experts call unusual but not unheard of, gives teens concrete and more individualized fitness goals. Detractors, while acknowledging the need to combat a national childhood obesity epidemic, say segregating out-of-shape students can be ostracizing in an environment where they may already be vulnerable to teasing. The rise and fall of physical education in schools |
Consumer Affairs
Despite the research showing the benefits of a physical education curriculum, the University of Michigan reports only 8 percent of elementary schools, 6.4 percent of middle schools, and 5.8 percent of high schools provide daily physical education to all of its students. In addition, 20 percent of all elementary schools in the U.S. have abolished recess in favor of increased classroom time under pressure to improve student achievement. With schools under increasing pressure to raise academic test scores, school administrators and government policymakers have been quick to cut back physical education. MORE |
Children's physical activity linked with friends' influences, research shows |
Emory News Center
According to a review article by researchers at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, friends are an important source of support for children's physical activity.
The review, led by Solveig A. Cunningham, PhD, professor at the Rollins School of Public Health, was published in the May 16 edition of the American Journal of Public Health. It reports three ways in which friends promote children's physical activity: MORE

Children's mental health...a new report |
CDC
On May 16, a new CDC report was released that describes, for the first time, federal activities that track U.S. children's mental disorders. Find out about children's mental health and what we have learned.
The term childhood mental disorder means all mental disorders that can be diagnosed and begin in childhood (for example, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette syndrome, behavior disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorders, substance use disorders, etc.). Mental disorders among children are described as serious changes in the ways children typically learn, behave, or handle their emotions. Symptoms usually start in early childhood, although some of the disorders may develop throughout the teenage years. The diagnosis is often made in the school years and sometimes earlier. However, some children with a mental disorder may not be recognized or diagnosed as having one. MORE

Workshop uses 'Brain breaks' to combat child obesity |
Evansville Courier & Press
"Brain breaks" students jumping out of their seat and counting by twos to 30 or by 10s to 100, are often used in Lindsay Rasure's kindergarten class at Fort Branch Elementary School in South Gibson County, Ind. Rasure was one of 95 kindergarten through fifth-grade teachers in a seven-county area who took part in the Take 10! workshop at Vincennes University Gibson Center in Fort Branch, Ind. With obesity rates among children and adolescents increasing significantly in the past 20 years, the purpose of Take 10! is to engage students through short bursts of physical activity, lasting about 10 minutes, in the classroom that also incorporates academic objectives. Children who spend more time in physical education classes are stronger |
HealthDay News
Spending more time in physical education classes helps students develop muscle strength and doesn't increase their risk of broken bones, a new study finds. The study included more than 900 girls and boys at a school in Sweden who had up to 200 minutes of physical education a week for two years. A control group of students continued with the standard amount of 60 minutes of physical education each week. MORE |

The program is believed to be a first in Australia and possibly worldwide. Attitudes in Reverse educates students about mental health, suicide prevention |
Times of Trenton (Opinion)
Each year, 20 percent of deaths of 15-to-24 year olds result from suicide, making it the third-leading cause of death in this age group, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For every completed suicide in this population, an additional 100 to 200 suicide attempts are made. Meanwhile, this age group is at the greatest risk of developing mental health disorders, which increase the risk of suicide if they are not treated. The mission of Attitudes in Reverse is to curtail this trend through education. MORE

Teen exercise: Physical activity shown to help teens stop smoking |
The Examiner
New results published by JAMA, indicate that of the teens who smoke, those who incorporate exercise are more likely to decrease or quit their daily cigarette use than those who do not. Through prior analysis of the American Lung Association's Not-On-Tobacco teen smoking cessation program, researchers initially thought that behavioral modification was the primary component to a successful smoking cessation program, yet these new results suggest that physical activity may have a greater impact on ending a smoking habit than previously believed.
