The NJ State Board of Education will consider a resolution to recognize May as Physical Education and Sport Month at the May 1st meeting. President JoAnn Doherty will accept the resolution on behalf of our members.

 

We have also received a Senate and Assembly Joint Resolution sponsored by Senator GORDON, Assemblyman EUSTACE and Assemblywoman WAGNER, honoring NJAHPERD and recognizing May as National Physical Education and Sport Month.

"EVERY CHILD STRONGER, EVERY LIFE LONGER" continues to provide the foundation for NJAHPERD's advocacy initiatives! FIT2ECSELL is the most recent of many NJAHPERD targeted movements to promote quality Health and Physical Education in New Jersey schools.

This initiative focuses on developing the first ever state- wide centralized data base for student health-related physical fitness. This collaborative effort between NJAHPERD, Rowan University, the YMCA State Alliance/Healthy U, and the Horizon Foundation of New Jersey has created a sustainable model for evaluating the health-related fitness status of New Jersey youth.   The project goal is to provide a comprehensive data profile of student fitness levels. The analysis of this data will lead the way for the development and implementation of viable fitness education and assessment programs in the future. The first year pilot includes 20 schools that are implementing the FitnessGram to assess local student fitness level. Local Health and Physical Education professionals as well technology staffs have been in-serviced regarding program implementation and data collection and reporting. The plan includes recruitment of additional schools each year. If you are interested in adding your school to this initiative, please contact NJAHPERD Executive Director, Jackie Malaska.

 

Grant funding is available for training and web based FG school site license.

Tournament Dates: August 20-25, 2013

Tickets Fore Charity is NJAHPERD's only fundraising event.  Through TFC, NJAHPERD (a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) we have the opportunity to raise significant charitable funds while becoming aligned with one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world.The Barclays is the first event in the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup and regularly attracts the biggest names in professional golf. The best part is 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of these tickets go to charity. NJAHPERD receives 75% of the proceeds with the remaining 25% donated to The First Tee of Metropolitan NY. Funds are raised by promoting ticket sales. Last year we raised over $3500 from sales and volunteers!

The volunteer package is $75 which includes shipping right to your front door as well as a logoed golf polo, logoed baseball cap, lunch vouchers on the days that you work, volunteer credential (valid all week, even when you aren't working), one grounds ticket per day for a guest, volunteer pin, lanyard and an invitation to the volunteer appreciation party. NJAHPERD is proud to recognize Dance Teacher of the Year, Barbara Brady, Linden High School and Middle School Teacher of the Year, Susan Toth, Tenafly Middle School.  Both teachers were honored at the NASPE Hall of Fame Banquet in Charlotte, NC on Friday evening as Eastern District TOYs.

 

Judy LoBianco was also presented with the Channing Mann K-12 Physical Education Administrator of the Year Award honoring an individual who exemplifies the highest standards in accomplishmnet and innovation, strong and vigorous leadership and significant scholarship within the field.

 

The National Association for Sport and Physical Edcuation proudly recognized Alexander Calleros, Wesley Ostrzycki and Natalie Santillo, William Paterson University and Cristofero Di Nucci, Kean University as the 2013 Outstanding Majors of the Year.

The delegates in attendance at the Alliance Assembly on Sunday, overwhelmingly approved unification. This is an historic moment in time for our 128-year old Alliance. Practical support helps teens get active

Families who want to help their adolescents become physically active should focus on logistical assistance more than emotional support, a study of 1,422 sixth-graders has shown. Emotional support from peers was associated with an increased likelihood of moderate to vigorous physical activity but not emotional support from families. Families did make a difference, however, by providing instrumental support such as transportation and sports equipment, E. It's PE time: Cue the DVD player
Napa Valley Register 
A physical education specialist from California's Napa Valley Unified School District is creating a DVD series to help elementary school teachers do a more creative job teaching PE. The program currently is being used as a pilot in eight of the district's elementary schools. All of the lessons on the DVD have been filmed with students at Napa, Calif., schools. Each DVD lesson includes a warm up, a game or activity description and a demonstration, according to the school district. Regularly eating cereal for breakfast is tied to healthy weight for children, according to a new study that endorses making breakfast cereal accessible to low-income children to help fight childhood obesity. Previous studies have linked eating breakfast with maintaining a lower body mass index over time. The new study looked at the role that breakfast, specifically cereal, plays in both weight and nutrition among low-income children. MORE 
Pushing children to eat may cause obesity later

While growing up, many children may have heard "clean your plate" or been denied candy. But how do parental attitudes toward food affect a child's weight? Denying certain foods to children or pressuring them to eat every bit of a meal are common practices among many parents. But researchers at the University of Minnesota found parents who restricted foods were more likely to have overweight or obese children. And while those who pressured children to eat all of their meals mostly had children of normal weight, it adversely affected the way those children ate as they grew older, according to the study published in the journal Pediatrics.

Just one daily soda can raise diabetes risk, study finds

Drinking just one 12-ounce soda a day may increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, a new study from Europe suggests. 

 

In the study, people who drank a 12-ounce sugar-sweetened soda daily were 18 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes over a 16-year period compared with those who did not consume soda. And people who drank two sodas daily were 18 percent more likely to have a stroke than those who drank one; those who drank three sodas daily saw the same risk increase compared with those who drank two, and so on.

 

The results held even after the researchers took into account risk factors for Type 2 diabetes such as age and physical activity levels, body mass index (BMI) and the total daily calorie intake.

The findings agree with earlier studies in the United States, which found daily soda consumption increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 25 percent.

 

However, the study found only an association, and cannot prove soda consumption causes Type 2 diabetes. It's possible other factors not accounted for by the study influenced the disease risk. In addition, participants answered questions about their diet just once at the study's start, and it's possible they changed their diets over time, the researchers said.

 

The researchers analyzed information from about 12,000 people who developed Type 2 diabetes between 1991 and 2007, and a randomly selected group of about 15,000 people, most of whom did not develop diabetes. All participants were taking part in a larger study looking into the interaction between diet, environmental factors and the risk of cancer and chronic diseases conducted in eight European countries.

 

People who drank one or more glasses of sugar-sweetened soda a day were about 30 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who drank less than one glass a month.

Because the link between sugar-sweetened soda and Type 2 diabetes was independent of BMI (an indicator of obesity level) and calorie intake, this finding suggests that other factors, such as the spike in blood sugar people experience when they drink soda, may play a role in the risk, the researchers said.

 

People who drank diet soda were also at increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes during the study compared with those who drank no soda. However, when the researchers took into account participants' BMI and total energy intake, the increased risk disappeared. This finding suggests that the link between diet soda and diabetes risk was driven by participants' weight: People who are obese, and thus already at risk for Type 2 diabetes, tend to report higher consumption of diet drinks.

Healthy food choices (such as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables), daily exercise and weight loss can help prevent Type 2 diabetes, or slow the progress of the disease in those with prediabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

NJAHPERD Legislative Action Committee Impacts proposed Recess Bill!

NJAHPERD Advocacy has had a very productive and busy year.  The Every Child Stronger Every Life Longer theme continues to drive us forward.  The creation of our new Legislative Action Committee is helping us to continue our proactive push to advocate and lobby with legislators and for legislative action that supports our mission.   We are working hand in hand with our lobbyist, the Torok Group, to strategize multiple and diverse ways to connect with NJ legislators as well as to educate our membership about legislative action and issues. Prescheduled bimonthly meetings as well as additional meetings based on need have facilitated this process.  Furthermore, our committee is developing stronger alliances and communication networks with partners and other stakeholders such as NJEA, American Heart Association, New Jersey Driver Education Coalition and the ShapingNJ Coalition.  Recently a proposed Recess Bill was brought before the NJ Senate for a vote.  The bill would require all elementary schools to provide a daily 20 minute recess period for all children.    NJAHPERD and partners pushed for an amendment that would stipulate that schools could not use recess in place of physical education class. The amendment was approved by the Senate! To become law, the bill will still need to pass in the New Jersey Assembly as well as approved by the governor.  The NJAHPERD Legislative Action Committee is currently working with the Torok Group and our many partners to support approval of this bill.

Feds limit driver distractions in cars

Federal regulators issued guidelines Tuesday aimed at making it tougher for drivers to become distracted by the navigation or infotainment systems in new cars.

 

But automakers say limits on in-car technology will backfire, enticing drivers into using their personal smartphones instead of cars' built-in systems.

 

The guidelines issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are voluntary, although widespread adoption is likely. Car companies are urged to restrict any system that lets drivers push buttons or otherwise manually input addresses or other data while the car is moving. Voice-activated systems are preferred. MORE

Hands-free texting still dangerous

New research suggests it's just as unsafe to use a voice-to-text mobile app while driving as it is to text manually.

 

The new study is by the Texas Transportation Institute, which says this is the first research on whether there are driving safety advantages in using voice-to-text apps.

 

Thestudy involved 43 licensed drivers in a 2009 Ford Explorer. They each drove four times for about 10 minutes at 30 mph: while not texting at all, while texting manually, while texting with the voice-to-text app on the iPhone, and while doing so with the Android smartphone voice-to-text app. MORE

Working in partnership with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), ING Run For Something Better (ING RSFB) is providing 60 grants to elementary and middle schools nationwide (up to $2,500 each) to establish a school-based running program or expand an existing one. The deadline to submit your completed 2013 ING RFSB school grant application is Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Childhood obesity is a serious nationwide health concern and ING RFSB is tackling the issue by helping kids become fit through free, school-based running programs. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) is pleased to again host the National Coaching Conference, supported by the USA Coaching Coalition members (NASPE, NCAA, NFHS, USOC) in Colorado Springs June 19 - 21, 2013. PSAHPERD Adapted Activities Convention  

June 22, 2013

This one-day ADAPTED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY  CONFERENCE is designed for professionals in the fields of health, physical education, recreation, dance, coaching, and fitness who want to learn more about working with individuals with disabilities in physical activity settings. Both hands-on practical and classroom based sessions will be provided.
Dr. Monica Lepore, Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at West Chester University, will be the keynote speaker.

July 11-13, 2013

Sessions across all three days will include nationally-known, invited guest speakers sharing their expertise on topics related to physical education and physical activity advocacy for individuals with disabilities. Conference sessions will also include poster presentations, free communication sessions and an Emerging Scholars Symposium.

Eating patterns that begin in childhood affect health and wellbeing across the lifespan. In the USA, we are in the midst of a childhood obesity epidemic that threatens to leave our children with a shorter life expectancy than their parents. As processed foods become more readily available around the world, other developed nations are beginning to follow suit. This course examines contemporary child nutrition in America from the individual decisions made by each family to the widespread food marketing targeting our children.  The health risks associated with obesity in childhood are also discussed. Students will learn what constitutes a healthy diet for children and adults and how to prepare simple, delicious foods aimed at inspiring a lifelong celebration of easy home-cooked meals. This course will help prepare students to be the leading health providers, teachers and parents of the present and future.
