TEACHNJ Update

On Wednesday, April 3, 2013, I attended the State Board of Education meeting in Trenton and gave public testimony on behalf of NJAHPERD. For a copy of the letter, click here.

I would like to thank all of you who have already taken the time to write to the State Board of Education members using the template we provided in the last issue of FYI or by sharing your own personal stories regarding the TEACHNJ Evaluation Regulations. I can honestly tell you they have made an impact on enlightening the members about our profession. But we must remain vigilant and keep those letters flowing. The next State Board meeting will be May 1st and public testimony will again be heard. If you would like to give oral or written testimony and need assistance or have any questions, contact the NJAHPERD office as soon as possible.

Notes from the road...
The Bridge, DOE

This month I witnessed the power of collaboration and the positive impact it can have on education. During conversations with different stakeholders, there was one overarching commonality - the desire for everyone to be on the same page and educated about new initiatives - specifically the Common Core State Standards.

At the end of February, Susan Toth, the Bergen County Teacher of the Year, invited me to the annual convention for the N.J. Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Susan is a dynamic teacher who is always looking for ways to motivate her students and staff to get active and stay healthy. While at the convention, I met and spoke with Health and Physical Education teachers throughout the state who were just as ambitious and dedicated. During the workshops, teachers were learning and sharing ways to keep their students and colleagues active before, during and after school. They also discussed how they incorporate the core subjects (math and language arts) within their lessons. I was so excited to be a part of such an important conversation. The more invested the entire staff is to helping students master the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the more students will achieve. MORE

 FIT2ECSELL

"EVERY CHILD STRONGER, EVERY LIFE LONGER" continues to provide the foundation for NJAHPERD's advocacy initiatives! FIT2ECSELL is the most recent of many NJAHPERD targeted movements to promote quality Health and Physical Education in New Jersey schools.

This initiative focuses on developing the first ever state- wide centralized data base for student health-related physical fitness. This collaborative effort between NJAHPERD, Rowan University, the YMCA State Alliance/Healthy U, and the Horizon Foundation of New Jersey has created a sustainable model for evaluating the health-related fitness status of New Jersey youth.   The project goal is to provide a comprehensive data profile of student fitness levels. The analysis of this data will lead the way for the development and implementation of viable fitness education and assessment programs in the future. The first year pilot includes 20 schools that are implementing the FitnessGram to assess local student fitness level. Local Health and Physical Education professionals as well technology staffs have been in-serviced regarding program implementation and data collection and reporting. The plan includes recruitment of additional schools each year. If you are interested in adding your school to this initiative, please contact NJAHPERD Executive Director, Jackie Malaska.

Grant funding is available for training and web based FG school site license.

NASPE's second infographic on physical activity in schools
AAHPERD
NASPE is excited to share our second infographic! This one focuses on physical activity in schools. The information in this inaugural series stems from data collected from all 50 states and the District of Columbia in the 2012 Shape of the Nation Report. Physical education is the cornerstone of a comprehensive school physical activity program. School-age children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. This infographic highlights missed opportunities for increasing physical activity outside of physical education class in schools. See which states are taking steps to create more opportunities to get kids moving and which are not. Be sure to also check out NASPE's first infographic, showcasing the status of physical education in schools. Scroll to the bottom of the Shape of the Nation web page to download and view both visuals. NASPE welcomes you to share the infographics through social media, emails, and other communication platforms to educate others and advocate for physical education and increased physical activity in schools! Education minister Ruairi Quinn said last year schools will be able to have it assessed as one of the short courses in the revamped Junior Cert, and now Mayo TD Ring has confirmed that the government is committed to making it happen as soon as possible. A time-honored way to make learning more lively and proactive is to frame schoolwork around enchanting and thought-provoking questions and to weave the content in as "answers" or "tools" in helping learners address those questions. The best essential questions are thought-provoking by design; that is, by their very nature they seek to bring minds to life. As noted in Chapter 1, a question isn't essential unless it awakens, heightens, or challenges thought.Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe use a sport example to show how the best questions make learning more active and enjoyable. Reasons not to stretch
The New York Times
Two new studies are giving us additional reasons not to stretch before exercise. One, a study being published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, concluded that if you stretch before you lift weights, you may find yourself feeling weaker and wobblier than you expect during your workout. Those findings join those of another new study from Croatia, a bogglingly comprehensive re-analysis of data from earlier experiments that was published in The Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Together, the studies augment a growing scientific consensus that pre-exercise stretching is generally unnecessary and likely counterproductive.  MORE
Olympians teach importance of physical activity
The Salt Lake TribuneIt is a well-known fact that physical education can help students be more physically fit but a new report strives to prove that PE in schools can also help students become better academically with more activity in their lives. That was the message that Champions For America's Future sent at Crestview Elementary in Holladay, Utah. They also presented Granite School District with a national PE award for willingness to keep physical education in the schools at an athlete-laden assembly. MORE
Public may no longer accept 'tough love' from sports coaches
The Christian Science Monitor via Alaska Dispatch
Calls continued to mount for the athletic director and even the president of Rutgers University in New Jersey to be fired for not taking tough measures sooner against men's basketball coach Mike Rice, who was fired and received what many see as a slap on the wrist for his violent treatment of players after ESPN brought video footage to light. But the incident is also prompting dialogue about broader societal issues, including the tolerance of anti-gay and gender-based slurs in sports, and whether the desire to build "toughness" in athletes too often turns into a destructive stream of negative feedback.  MORE

Let's Move! Active Schools

Let's Move! Active Schools
Become a Champion TODAY!

We know that schools today are facing all sorts of challenges.  They're balancing multiple priorities and dealing with shrinking budgets while striving to do every single thing they can to help our children learn and grow.

Let's Move! Active Schools is designed to address these challenges by spurring innovative solutions and offering customized support every step of the way.  We know that our kids need 60 minutes of physical activity daily, not only so they can grow up healthy, but also because we know it helps them succeed in school.  That's why this program empowers schools to find free or low-cost ways to incorporate movement before, during, and after the school day.  We'll help connect schools to grant opportunities, online resources, personal assistance, and hands-on professional development.

There's just one thing we're still missing-you.

We're looking for school champions to lead this effort in communities across the country.  Every school needs a champion, and anyone can be that champion.  From P.E. and classroom teachers to administrators, staff, and parents, all it takes is one dedicated person to step up and start making a difference.

All you have to do is sign up at LetsMoveSchools.org and follow a simple, six-step process to create an active school environment and build support among leadership, staff, families, and other community members.  Along the way, you'll have access to free tools and resources to help you take action.

Lincoln Leopards Jump Rope Demo Team
Lincoln Leopards
Lincoln Elementary School , Hasbrouck Heights

The Lincoln School Jump Rope Team has been part of the school's culture since the mid-1980's when legendary Physical Education teacher, Mr. Dean Hoskin, proposed the idea to the American Heart Association and the Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education.  The agreement was made and two decades later, the Lincoln Leopards are still going strong.

The primary goal of the Demonstration Team is to serve as "ambassadors" at kick-off assemblies for school's that participate in the American Heart Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser, however the benefits of this team go far beyond the funds raised.  For our school, for our students, this Demonstration Team is an opportunity to carry the torch and participate in something that has been going on for twenty years.  It is an opportunity to perform in front of their classmates, their teachers, their Principal, and above all their parents. The select few that are chosen to be part of the team carry themselves with a sense of pride knowing they must represent our school.  MORE

NJAHPERD Legislative Action Committee Impacts proposed Recess Bill!
Jim McCall, Advocacy Chair

NJAHPERD Advocacy has had a very productive and busy year.  The Every Child Stronger Every Life Longer theme continues to drive us forward.  The creation of our new Legislative Action Committee is helping us to continue our proactive push to advocate and lobby with legislators and for legislative action that supports our mission.   We are working hand in hand with our lobbyist, the Torok Group, to strategize multiple and diverse ways to connect with NJ legislators as well as to educate our membership about legislative action and issues. Prescheduled bimonthly meetings as well as additional meetings based on need have facilitated this process.  Furthermore, our committee is developing stronger alliances and communication networks with partners and other stakeholders such as NJEA, American Heart Association, New Jersey Driver Education Coalition and the ShapingNJ Coalition.  Recently a proposed Recess Bill was brought before the NJ Senate for a vote.  The bill would require all elementary schools to provide a daily 20 minute recess period for all children.    NJAHPERD and partners pushed for an amendment that would stipulate that schools could not use recess in place of physical education class. The amendment was approved by the Senate! To become law, the bill will still need to pass in the New Jersey Assembly as well as approved by the governor.  The NJAHPERD Legislative Action Committee is currently working with the Torok Group and our many partners to support approval of this bill.

Advocacy Tip of the Month
Your Legislators need to hear from advocates like you about the importance of physical education and health education.

Visit the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center to:

* Locate your Congressmen to request a meeting, ask them to visit your school, or to view a schedule of town hall meetings,
* Locate your local media contacts to submit an op-ed or letter to the editor about the importance of physical education and health education in your community,
* Continue to support physical education and health education by using the action alerts available on the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center

Guess who's driving distracted
The Patch

Think it's just teens who text and drive? Not so fast! A new AT&T survey found that 49 percent of adults admit to texting while driving, compared to 43 percent of teens. Perhaps most troubling is the fact that both adults and teens know that what they're doing is wrong.

The survey found that 98 percent of respondents are aware that texting and driving isn't safe. Clearly the educational campaigns urging motorists to put down their smart phones or other communications devices while behind the wheel are being seen and heard. But despite this messaging, the AT&T survey suggests that the problem is getting worse. Six out of every 10 respondents said that, three years ago, they never texted while driving. Meanwhile, 40 percent of drivers who admit to texting in the survey say it's a habit, not just an occasional slip-up. MORE
