It's JUST Recess...
Alyssa Merritt, Dorchester Elementary School

NJAHPERD awarded Dorchester Elementary School FlagHouse equipment worth $1000.00

The word "recess" has several different definitions.  According to the Miriam Webster Online Dictionary, the noun, "recess" means "the action of receding; a hidden secret or secluded place or part; or a suspension of business or procedure often for rest or relaxation" (Miriam-Webster Online 2012).  With these definitions, it is no wonder that our students have a difficult time playing together at recess.  Some of them choose to be secluded; some are excluded by others; and several want to do nothing during their time at recess.  These issues were the catalyst for change at recess.  Additionally, there were many discussions that students were deficient in the ability to play together without direct supervision from an adult.  A committee of teachers, parents and administrators worked together to develop "Project Play Fit", which used concepts from Dr. Curt Hinson.  The goal of Project Play Fit was to develop a structured recess program that focuses on nurturing students' social skills, providing students with developmentally appropriate activities, and increasing student self-responsibility, as well as encouraging an inclusive atmosphere for all students.   MORE

So you think you can dance...
Barbara J. Brady - NJAHPERD Dance Teacher of the Year 2012

As NJAHPERD Dance Teacher of the year, I was given the wonderful opportunity to attend a performance of "So You Think You Can Dance" at the NJ Performing Arts Center on November 27, 2012 with two of my dance students and my Linden HS Dance Company assistant, Melanie Jefferson.  Our evening was sponsored by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), the National Dance Association (NDA), and Ubisoft, makers of Just Dance 4.  What a thrill it was to watch these dancers perform live.  It was truly an inspiration for my students to see such beauty on that stage.  After the show, we were able to go backstage and meet the dancers.  It was very exciting for all of us to have this unique experience that we will never forget.  Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

What Research Can Help Your Students Score Higher on the Upcoming BIG Tests?
jensenlearning.com
This article focuses on three things that can help your students improve their chances to score up to their potential on assessments. By the way, kids never score above their potential; they're just not going to randomly make enough lucky right answers time after time after time (in statistics, it's called regression to the mean).

But, students often underperform for a host of reasons, even when they should perform much better. While we could focus on dozens of variables that influence standardized testing, we'll focus on these three: 1) brain chemistry, 2) priming, and 3) episodic memory triggers. MORE

A Letter to Phil Lawler, From Tim McCord
pe4life
A Letter to My Friend,

Phil Lawler, you would be proud.  I spent the weekend at our PSAHPERD Convention.  Phil always looked at conventions as an opportunity to network.  If you ever spent time with Phil at a convention you would know that it always took plenty of time to get from one end of the vendor hall to the other due to his networking with everyone.

During my time at our state convention I was so impressed with the passion shown not only by university students, but also by the veteran teachers that were in attendance.  I chatted with many physical educators who thanked me for the work we had done in Titusville and for our willingness to share with others the means by which we developed our PE program.  This never would have happened without Phil's influence. Healthy School Fundraising Resources
National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity
Given the high rates of childhood obesity and children's poor diets, many schools are reconsidering whether selling low-nutrition foods is an appropriate way to raise money. In addition, the USDA will soon propose nutrition standards for competitive foods (including fundraisers) sold in schools. While identifying and initiating new fundraising strategies can be a challenge, many practical and profitable healthy fundraising alternatives are available.

For additional information there are already a number of schools that have successfully implemented healthy fundraisers as well as a fact sheet on healthy fundraiser ideas with a list of healthier options.

Teens need to think of their health during the winter
Springfield Sate Journal-Register
For teenagers, winter brings more than frigid temperatures and falling snow. The change in seasons delivers a slew of finals, a series of college application due dates and for some, time-demanding jobs. "Our teens have so many things going on in their lives right now that they need to remember to take care of themselves," said pediatrician Dr. Sheref Unal. More

Prevention Data on Birth Rates
CDC and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics
Data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics showed that teen birth rates have fallen to the lowest level ever recorded. In 2011, the teen birth rate fell to 31.3 births per 1,000 from 34.2 per 1,000 in 2010. Following is a statement from Leslie Kantor, vice president of education for Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

"The teen birth rate has fallen to the lowest level ever recorded. This new data shows that reducing teen pregnancy is a winnable battle. Planned Parenthood works every day to ensure that teens have access to the education and services that work to prevent unintended pregnancy.

"The teen birth rate has been declining steadily for several years because more teens are using birth control, and more teens are using contraception and condoms together. We can continue this progress by doing what we know works, including expanding access to high-quality sex education and making long-acting types of birth control, such as IUDs and implants, more accessible to teens, which the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently recommended."

As an additional resource, the National Sexuality Education Standards  are available on the AAHE resources webpage. The Standards include clear, consistent and straightforward guidance on the essential minimum, core content for sexuality education that is developmentally and age-appropriate for students in grades K-12.

Tis' the Season for Migraines: How to Stay Headache Free this Holiday Season
Novocur Pain Management Centers
The holiday season is supposed to be a merry time, but if you are one of the 30 million Americans who suffer from migraines, the season could also be a headache trigger.

Dr. Alex Bigham, CEO of Novocur Pain Management Centers, said his offices are busier than ever between Thanksgiving and New Year's thanks to holiday stress. "If you think of the things that cause migraines, all of them seem to come together around this time - high levels of stress, changes in sleep, missing meals, increased dehydration, excess alcohol consumption and even the food you eat at holiday parties."

The following foods are migraine triggers:

- Red wine
- Chocolate
- Caffeinated beverages
- Certain types of cheese, nuts and nitrate-rich snacks, like pepperoni

For people who suffer from migraines, Dr. Bigham has put together some quick tips to help navigate the holiday season and avoid migraine headaches.
  • Carry medication: Always carry migraine medication with you in case of an attack. Whether it's a work function or a family affair, planning ahead can save you a lot of migraine misery later
  • Don't overextend yourself: Know your social limits. If you are only comfortable attending a certain amount of parties or functions or if you need to make time to rest, accept that it's OK to decline an invitation once in awhile.
  • Drink lots of water: Drink more water than you think you need - especially if you plan to indulge in alcoholic beverages over the holiday season
  • Think ahead: For people who have chronic migraines, more intensive treatments like steroid injections can help keep migraines at bay throughout the entire holiday season
  • Make party planning stress-free: Stress can make you more susceptible to your migraine triggers. Planning a dinner party for friends and family? Plan ahead and shop early. Enlist helpers and delegate duties to make last-minute details stress free as possible
  • Eat regularly: An empty stomach is known to spur migraines. Even if you are busy, it's important to make time to eat. Pack a snack with you when you are on-the-go to avoid skipping meals.
  • Get your shut eye: A lack of sleep or too much sleep can trigger a migraine. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule during the season. Pick a few key events and get an appropriate amount of rest.

Know your triggers: Certain foods and drinks can fuel a migraine. If cheese is one of your triggers, try choosing fresh fruits and vegetables as a substitute. Consider opting for the carrot cake if chocolate seems to lead to your migraine attacks. In other words, you can still enjoy, just think about your choices.

Obese children more vulnerable to food advertising
Elsevier via ScienceDaily
Rates of childhood obesity have tripled in the past 30 years and food marketing has been implicated as one factor contributing to this trend. Every year, companies spend more than $10 billion in the U.S. marketing their food and beverages to children; 98 percent of the food products advertised to children on television are high in fat, sugar or sodium. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers used neuroimaging to study the effects of food logos on obese and healthy weight children. More

CDC School Health Index
CDC
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) is pleased to announce the release of the updated School Health Index (SHI). First released in 2000, the SHI is a self-assessment and planning tool that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs.

Schools use the SHI to:

Identify strengths and weaknesses of health and safety policies and programs.
Enable schools to develop an action plan for improving student health, which can be incorporated into the School Improvement Plan.
Engage teachers, parents, students, and the community in promoting health-enhancing behaviors and improving health.
The SHI is based on CDC's research-based guidelines for school health programs, which identify the policies and practices most likely to be effective in reducing youth health risk behaviors. School health programs can help students establish healthy behaviors early in life, with positive results that are both immediate and long lasting. The SHI is available free of charge.

Contest: U Got Brains Champion Schools Program
Deadline extended to Dec. 15, 2012
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is once again hosting its "U Got Brains Champion Schools Program" - a contest to challenge New Jersey high school students and faculty to create unique projects aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving.

Schools receive a $1,000 stipend to help develop teen driving safety programs and compete against other high schools to win cool prizes...including the grand prize-a driving simulator for their school.  Deadline to apply is December 15.

Here's how it works:
- Develop an idea in your school for a project related to teen driving safety.
- Submit your project name, a 500 word summary of the proposed project, and a list of strategies and events to be implemented along with it.

If your school's project is selected, you will receive a $1,000 stipend to implement it.

Selected schools will have several months to implement their projects and compete against other schools to win the ultimate prize: a driving simulator for your school!

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen injuries and death.

This is a great opportunity to engage your students in an educational, fun and interactive competition, while addressing an important safety issue.

Remember, creativity is a must! We are looking for unique campaign ideas that will draw attention and make an impact on new drivers.
