Muscular body image lures boys into gym, and obsession |
The New York Times
It is not just girls these days who are consumed by an unattainable body image. Take David Abusheikh. At age 15, he started lifting weights for two hours a day, six days a week. Now that he is a senior at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., he has been adding protein bars and shakes to his diet to put on muscle without gaining fat. "I didn't used to be into supplements," said Abusheikh, 18, who plans on a career in engineering, "but I wanted something that would help me get bigger a little faster." MORE

How do you change the way kids eat? Ask a chef |
philly.com
The introduction of more nutritious foods to the federal lunch program this school year has brought news reports of kids going hungry rather than eating the added vegetables and whole grains, their spoofs and protests of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 immortalized on YouTube. What appears to be missing in the biggest overhaul to the school lunch program is creativity, flavor and the vision to entice kids to eat food that is not only tasty, but healthy and educational. So here's a revolutionary thought: bring more chefs to school for lunch. The lunchroom can be a classroom. MORE

NJAHPERD supports the initiative and has taken the lead to "spread the word" through our ShapingNJ partners. Contest: U Got Brains Champion Schools Program |
Deadline extended to Dec. 15, 2012
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is once again hosting its "U Got Brains Champion Schools Program" - a contest to challenge New Jersey high school students and faculty to create unique projects aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving.
Schools receive a $1,000 stipend to help develop teen driving safety programs and compete against other high schools to win cool prizes...including the grand prize-a driving simulator for their school. Deadline to apply is December 15.
Here's how it works: - Develop an idea in your school for a project related to teen driving safety. - Submit your project name, a 500 word summary of the proposed project, and a list of strategies and events to be implemented along with it.
If your school's project is selected, you will receive a $1,000 stipend to implement it.
Selected schools will have several months to implement their projects and compete against other schools to win the ultimate prize: a driving simulator for your school!
Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen injuries and death.
This is a great opportunity to engage your students in an educational, fun and interactive competition, while addressing an important safety issue. Remember, creativity is a must! We are looking for unique campaign ideas that will draw attention and make an impact on new drivers. Click here to learn more, apply or view last year's winners. |
Win $10k and more...What percentage of teens report using their cell phone while driving? |
Posted by Aaron Schiller (cause supporter)
With the holidays approaching we want to make sure the teens in your life are being safe drivers. To inspire you to take action, Toyota Teen Driver and Discovery Education are challenging high school teachers and students to help keep teen drivers safe behind the wheel in their communities-all with the chance to win great prizes. It's simple: High School Educators: Create a safe driving action plan for a chance to win $10,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a safe driving assembly and virtual driving simulator for your school! High School Students: Submit a two-minute video on how to make teens safer drivers for a chance to win up to $15,000 and a Discovery Film Crew to capture your vision! Pass this on to any teachers or teenagers you know and have them enter today.
