EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

Hurricane Sandy  Relief Updates

The NJAHPERD Executive Board has committed funds to provide basic equipment to schools that have been affected by the violent storm that ripped through our state. We have partnered with the NJEA and have received a list of schools identified as needing immediate assistance.

FlagHouse has generously provided product discounts and will ship the equipment as soon as possible.
We are grateful to the NJAHPERD members who have reached out to offer support. We have also been contacted by out of state schools and organizations that are willing to help and we will be coordinating the efforts during the next few weeks.

Equipment has already been ordered for the Lavallette School which has relocated to a site in Toms River. We expect to receive an extensive list from the NJEA Regional offices and will do our best to provide as many schools with the equipment they need to ensure their students receive the best program possible under these tough circumstances.

Additionally, if your school has sustained any damage and you need equipment replaced, FlagHouse has reduced prices by 25% plus free parcel shipping, for a combined savings of 41%. All of your standard physical education items will be available under this program. FlagHouse will also quote you special prices for any item you request including items cannot be discounted as steeply (for example, playground structures.)
If you would like to take advantage of this assistance, please call FlagHouse at 800-221-5185 and tell your representative why you are calling. They will attend to your needs.

If your school has lost equipment due to Hurricane Sandy, please notify the NJAHPERD office and we will do our best to assist you with the basics to get your students up and moving.

The 2012 Shape of the Nation Report: Status of Physical Education in the USA provides a current picture of physical education in the American education system. The 2012 survey finds areas of both improvement and decline since the 2010 Shape of the Nation Report. Thirty-eight states, 74.5%, mandate physical education in elementary, middle/high, and high school, but most do not require a specific amount of instructional time and more than half allow exemptions, waivers, and/or substitutions.  Read the report to see how NJ measures up!

The 2012 Shape of the Nation Report: Status of Physical Education in the USA provides a current picture of physical education in the American education system. The 2012 survey finds areas of both improvement and decline since the 2010 Shape of the Nation Report. New areas of the report include:

- whether physical activity is being used as punishment in states,
- information about state education agencies collecting and enforcing local school wellness
   policies,
- requirements for classroom-based physical activity breaks.

Advocates can use information from the Shape of the Nation report in presentations, letters, and other means of communication with federal and state policymakers, the media, and the general public as part of the basis for expanding and improving physical education. Why women can't do pull-ups
The New York Times
While the pull-up has been used by everyone from middle-school gym teachers to Marine drill instructors to measure fitness, the fact is that many fit people, particularly women, can't do even one. To perform a pull-up, you place your hands on a raised bar using an overhand grip, arms fully extended and feet off the floor. (The same exercise, performed with an underhand grip, is often called a chin-up.) Using the muscles in your arms and back, you pull yourself up until your chin passes the bar. Then the body is lowered until the arms are straight and the exercise is repeated. MORE

Are you using the President's Challenge for Fitness Testing?
President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition

The launch of this new program signals a new era in youth fitness assessment-one that focuses on health over performance. The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) began recognizing participation in the Youth Fitness Test in 1966. This step represents the first major changes to the test in 25 years. The new program features three key components: 1. Assessment, 2. Professional Development, and 3. Recognition and awards. The Youth Fitness Test, will be phased out during the 2012-13 school year to encourage use of FITNESSGRAM®, which provides a barometer on students' overall health and, when used in conjunction with the other elements of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, empowers kids and families to become physically active for a lifetime.

RESEARCH RESULTS

Lack of sleep increases injury risk in teenage athletes
News Medical
Adolescent athletes who have less than eight hours sleep a night are more likely to be injured when participating in sport than those who sleep for longer, show study results. The research also suggests that the risk for injury in young athletes rises with increasing age or grade in school. "While other studies have shown that lack of sleep can affect cognitive skills and fine motor skills, nobody has really looked at this subject in terms of the adolescent athletic population," said study author Matthew Milewski, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, California, USA, in a press statement. Parents in survey take responsibility for childhood obesity
Los Angeles Times
Sixty percent of the cause of the rise in childhood obesity rests with the parents, according to parents who took a Yale survey about food marketing. The parents assigned the rest of the cause to an unhealthy food environment. Parents buy an estimated $58 billion in food and beverages annually, so the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity wanted to know what they thought about marketing to children. It conducted an online survey of 2,454 parents of children ages 2 to 17 in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Their average income was $59,000 and most of them had at least some college education. MORE
Study: Right amount of exercise can boost mental health
Health Day News
People who exercise 2.5 to 7.5 hours a week have better mental health, but more than that is associated with poorer mental health, a new study suggests. Researchers compared mental health to exercise by analyzing self-reported data from more than 7,600 adults who took part in a U.S. national survey. MORE
