Water!!!

We all move to the rhythms of water.  We are attracted to its simplistic and complete beauty. Our bodies are about 2/3 water.

Water is our mate---the element  which we most closely match.   We yearn for water and we are quenched by drinking it slowly or gulping it down like a thirsty camel.  We bathe in water to cleanse and soothe.  We dance in rain (sometimes just in our imagination) and we play in water.  Water reminds us to be flexible, harmonious, and relaxed. Water is a primary source of our health. Our attraction to water is inexhaustible. What a miracle.

If You are Already Thirsty, It Is Too Late!

Ayurveda Tips for Daily Hydration

You should never feel thirsty -- this is a sign that you are already dehydrated.  Many of our challenging health conditions are instigated by dehydration. Keep fully hydrated with good daily habits.
  • Begin with Morning Lemon Detox (after scraping tongue which always comes first)--recipe to right
  • Drink 8oz of room temp water about 30 minutes before each meal (only drink 1/2 cup water with meal) to lubricate the stomach to receive food.
  • Sip 16oz or more hot spice water (1/2 tsp fennel, 1/4 tsp cumin, and 1/4 tsp coriander seed tea) through the day. You can let it cool to room temp in summer
  • Eat brothy soups and dahls
  • Drink herbal teas hot or cooled to room temp to take in healing Ayurveda herbs--recommend brahmi tea, mint tea, or chai tea.
  • Drink organic coconut water daily
  • If you need to snack, choose watery fruits like organic grapes, strawberries, and oranges
  • Add fresh lemon/lime slices or cucumbers to water for extra taste and vitamins/minerals.
  • Avoid alcohol, sugar, and processed foods--very dehydrating.
What Would Motivate You to Drink More Water?

Drinking water keeps our systems moist, our skin plump, our temperature regulated, and our blood flowing, right?  Sure--but oh so, so much more. Water is the essential element supporting all of the  physiological, mechanical, and energetic functions of the body.

Maybe Knowing the Science Is Motivating for You.

Here's one example of the science of water in our bodies.  Many cells hold a positively charged potassium ion within (intercellular) the water sac of the cell.  The water outside the cell is teemed with positively charged sodium ions (extracelular).  They interact with electromagnetic affinity to create the sodium-potassium pump.

This polar affinity causes movement in and out of the cell via a water gateway.  In this little miraculous action, nutrients are transported into the cell and waste products are transported out. So you see, it's more than hydrating to keep our skin, blood, and organs full of water and plump.

We can eat the best food, but if we are not properly hydrated, the nutrients will not get where they need to be.  Water provides the transportation action and is the medium for nearly every bodily function necessary to nourish and sustain our life systems.   WATER!
How Much Water Do you Need?

There are generally 3 determinants for how much water you need -- body weight, water loss, and capacity for absorption.

Many health professionals suggest we need about eight 8oz glasses of water a day.   Case Adams--the amazing Naturopath and author suggests that is not enough.  We lose 2-3 qts of water a day.

Case suggests 91 oz (11+ glasses ) for women and 125 oz (15+ glasses) for men on average.  If you are physically active or in weather that is dehydrating, you may need even more. A quick rough measure of what you need is to divide your body weight by 2 and that is the number of ounces needed each day.

Drinking this much water can be challenging, but you can be strategic. When and how you drink water can exaggerate effect. Water such as the lemon detox tea first thing in the morning when the body is naturally dehydrated has a bigger effect.   Drinking hot spice water (you can let it cool) where the water is activated with spices and by boiling has a bigger effect.

Eating watery foods is good.  We don't need to get all of our water by drinking it. About 80% comes from drinking water, about 20% from food.

Drinking 8 oz of water 30 minutes before eating has a bigger  effect.   Drinking water with herbs (teas) can be carried deeper into the tissues.

Not sure how much water your drinking?  Try filling a quart (32 ounces) with water  and drink it.  Can you do that 3 times a day?  Here's to your radiant health...bottoms up.

Lemon, honey, vinegar and cayenne form a classic, vivacious Ayurvedic blend to boost fat digestion and metabolism. A strong sour taste encourages the free flow of bile from your liver and gall bladder to your gut.

Watermelon--Is it Hydrating?

Sorry, but no.  Watermelon can quench thirst temporarily but primarily it dries the body because it is  high in potassium and a diuretic.

So if you have high Kapha and water retention or want to flush your kidneys, watermelon is good for you.  But if you want to hydrate, enjoy but in small amounts or also drink water.
