Radiant Life Ayurveda
Lean Into It!

Greetings!

OK...so..over the holidays we tend to indulge in food, drink,  and a social schedule that we could not and would not want to maintain for 12 months.  Many of our good habits go out the window ... temporarily.  To everything there is a season.
Come January, we get renewed visions of a healthier, fitter, leaner, more energetic us.  It is okay that we cycle through this each year. Having a little abandon for the sake of joy and community is a good thing.  The important action is to restore balance and carry on once we have gone too far in one direction.

According to Ayurveda, our perfect weight is particular to the individual.  Perhaps we gained weight over the holidays or over the whole of 2013.  With Ayurveda we can establish and maintain our right weight in the healthiest of ways.

Diets that focus on consuming or eliminating certain foods result in cravings. Ayurveda succeeds on its most basic foundation - a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle. Perhaps the greatest dieting myth is the low-calorie diet.  Calorie restriction signals your body that there is not enough food available so it better slow down your metabolism and store some fat to sustain.  With Ayurveda we learn how to increase metabolism and burn stored fat while clearing toxins.

When we select, prepare (with spices), and consume natural  (non-processed) foods that support our doshic balance, we enjoy the Ayurveda goal of perfect digestion.  We are then properly nourished which reduces cravings and improper assimilation of nourishment.

With knowledge of Ayurveda, you can learn how to (1) optimize your digestion, (2) eat to detox and balance your doshic type, (3) fire up a healthy metabolism, and (4) pay attention to how you eat. Weight change is not the goal of Ayurveda however, Ayurveda approaches lead the right size for your doshic type that is healthy and maintains over time.  The idea is not to make radical changes that you do not sustain, but rather to lean into an evolution of health by adding what is good for you which squeezes out what no longer serves.

In keeping with this theme, this eNews is "lean".  If you want to go deeper, check out the workshop "Lean Into Healthy Weight with Ayurveda" beginning early January where you can learn with others, custom menu plan for your needs, participate in hands-on demos. and take-home some samples.   I include some links for your further investigation in this eNews.

Live with radiant intention and be well. Rhonda

When you eat

  • Eat 3 meals a day with no snacking for weight loss or limited "healthy" snacking for weight maintenance.
  • Eat your largest meal at noon when your digestive fire is highest. Supper should be your smallest meal.
  • Eat at regular times and have supper by 6pm.
  • Eat only when hungry.  Skip breakfast or supper if you are not hungry. Don't snack to make up for it.

Note:  When we snack the body is digesting. There is no call for the body to pull out stored fat because it is never needed. Between meals we burn stored fat. (If you have hypoglycemia you will need to do what is best to take care of this).  A cup of tea may reduce a need for to snack between meals.  You may add a bit of honey if you like.

How you eat

  • Slow down, relax, enjoy your meal.
  • Be at peace when you eat.
  • You will digest much better if you eat without watching TV, doing email or arguing.

Note: If you relax when you eat you will not signal your body to store fat and thus you will digest and utilize the energy of what you are eating.  You will feel full when you have eaten enough to nourish you.

What you eat

  • Eat more foods that are good for you rather than restrict that are not good for you.
  • Ayurveda recommends eating foods that are in season. In January this may be winter squashes, dried beans,  nuts, grains, and seeds.
  • Eat warm cooked foods that are freshly prepared.

Check dosha balancing tips for more good foods for the current Vata season. As you attend to when, how, and what you eat, pace yourself.  Do not strain or your body will see the act of eating as a stressful emergency and store fat.

We celebrated Winter Solstice on December 21.  Now, we welcome the return of the light.

"Optimistic Voices"from Wizard of Oz and also known as "Out of the Dark" sings it well.

Take a trip down  memory lane with this short clip from the original movie and think---what is the "Wizard of Oz" really about?

You're out of the woods,
You're out of the dark, You're out of the night.
Step into the sun,
Step into the light.
Keep straight ahead for the most glorious place
On the Face of the Earth or the sky.
Hold onto your breath, Hold onto your heart, Hold onto your hope.
March up to the gate and bid it open
