Greetings!
October--up, down, here, there, calm, stormy--a month of variable weather and yes sometimes variable moods. We are moving out of the summer Pitta season of natural heat and fire into Vata Fall. Ayurveda has 3 primary seasons--one for each dosha. Vata season runs October through February. Vata season is like the Vata dosha within us--variable, cool, dry, windy (airy), ungrounded, enthusiastic, moving, and spiritual.
We do best to keep our balance and health if we make seasonal adjustments. As we enter Vata, we want to be more focused on generating our internal fire and warmth, eating more cooked foods, stoking agni with pungent spices, grounding ourselves with yoga, massage, and meditation practices, feeding our enthusiasm by connecting with others, and using more oils in our cooking and on our body to moisten ourselves in this dry season.

Vata can easily be disrupted so no matter your primary Ayurveda constitution and primary imbalances, it is healthy to also attend to balancing your Vata in the Vata season. Check out some tips in this newsletter. I invite you to select at least 2 or 3 to adopt into your radiant lifestyle.

How do we know our Vata is out of balance? Look for these signs:
- anxiety
- difficulty falling asleep
- a weakened immune system
- constipation
- skin dryness
- emotional conflict
- inability to make decisions
- impulsiveness
- fast and disconnected speech or difficulty speaking up
If one or more of these is you, your Vata needs balancing. Additionally, Vata is the most common imbalance present over half the time. As we live longer we our Vata increases. Fall is Vata season. All good reasons to do something about your Vata now.

Fire Up Your Digestions with Spices!
Spices enliven our digestion and create more Ojas (juice of life) from what we eat. In Vedic fire ceremonies spices, oils, seeds, and nuts are offered to the fire. It is a practice of devotion and reverence to the elemental energies of life. Through such a practice we can invoke the subtle energies of the elements and call forth blessings to our life.
Likewise, we can think of our daily eating as ritual and we are offering food, spices, seeds, and the like to our digestive fire. As you take in the earth's bounty, think about the energy and intelligence with which you are nourishing yourself. As you do this, daily nourishment will transform from eating for calories and quick energy to eating for healing, cosmic intelligence, and deep nourishment. Here are some particularly good spices to use for pacifying Vata. When cooking with spices first cook in a little ghee or olive oil. Well actually first honor the spice and bless it for your nourishment, saute, then offer it to your fire---feel the full experience of that.

Vata pacifying spices (warming and moisturizing)
- cardamom
- cinnamon
- saffron
- salt
- cumin
- ginger
- cloves
- mustard seed
- cayenne and black pepper (in moderation, too much is drying which is anti-vata)

Tip to meet the fall flu and cold season head on.
Immune System Strengthening Tea
I love the taste of this.
Add a 1 " piece of fresh ginger sliced, a stick of cinnamon and 2 black peppercorns or trikatu powder (ayurveda herb) to a quart of boiled water. Put in a thermos Drink through the day. Add honey per taste.

Best Ayurveda Tip Ever!!
Hot Spice Water
In a liter/quart thermos:
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
1/4 tsp coriander seeds
slice of fresh ginger- optional
Add seeds to thermos and pour boiling water into the thermos. Sip this hot spice water throughout the day. You can add more boiling water if you drink it up. But the next day make a fresh batch.
The effect of the hot water on the side of the tongue signals your body to digest. If you have not just eaten, the signal will be to digest stored fat. Since this is where toxins often hang out, drinking the hot water will pull out ama (toxins) along with fat and discharge from your body.
The 3 spices are digestive spices so this is an added bonus for digestion and healthy metabolism. Once you start doing this, you will feel much cleaner as digestion will be more complete.
