Radiant Life Ayurveda
Greetings!

How can something so yummy be so good for you?  That has to be one of life's little miracles.
split coconut
Coconut has been used reverently in Ayurveda for thousands of years for its noted immense health benefits and has recently emerged as the darling of the broader natural health world.

We can enjoy the benefits of coconut from the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet and anything in between.  We can ingest it or use it topically.  Coconut is used in many forms---the meat can be eaten or pressed to make oil or milk. The water from the core is very sterile and nutritious making for a superior health drink.

All forms of coconut are cooling so the hot days of August are an excellent time to go a little coconut-ty.  Explore the uses and benefits of coconut in this eNews.  Perhaps you will find something you would like to try.

Live with radiant intention and be well, Rhonda

What a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts:

green coconutCoconut is considered a divine plant in the Vedic tradition.  Ayurveda's revered ancient healer,  Sushruta, noted that tender coconuts are "bal maans prada" in nature, meaning they strengthen muscle, the cardiovascular system, and the seven body tissues.  According to the Council of Maharishi Physicians, there is much to love about the tender coconut.  Here are a few benefits:

  1. There are times when your body fills up with pitta-charged ama-visha (toxic matter). This causes the pH levels in the deeper digestive system to fall, leading to severe hyperacidity or amla pitta. Coconut to the rescue is capable of getting all the toxins and Vata to move downward, helping to move pitta and purify the digestive system.
  2. Ayurveda considers coconut a natural stress-buster.
  3. Coconut has keshya properties-that is, it improves hair quality. Applying coconut oil to hair every day maintains the proteins and nurtures your long, lustrous locks.
  4. Due to its soma-enhancing or nurturing value, coconut heals hot flashes and restores emotional stability in menopausal women.
  5. Coconut improves the complexion, heals wounds, and is especially effective at preventing the formation of scars if applied topically.
  6. There is a word called karshan meaning "that which supports the body to stay slim by enhancing fat metabolism." Recent research suggests that coconut is good for burning fat and lowering cholesterol- and it is clearly written in ayurveda that the oil has karshan properties.
  7. Best of all, it is delicious!

Coconut Oil is Good for Weight Loss...Really?

Coconut oil is a saturated fat and since the mid 20th century--those have been on the bad list. Saturated fats have been purported to increase cholesterol which is reputed to cause heart disease.  However, saturated fat is an essential nutrient for proper cellular function.  Saturated fats include animal fats like lard and butter and tropical oils coconut oil like palm and coconut.

Coconut has the highest amount of saturated fat at 92%, however, over half of those are made up of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) that are metabolized much differently than the long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) prevalent in most vegetable and seed oils. LCFA's are more difficult to break down and more easily stored as fat.

Research shows that MCFA convert directly into energy, lower cholesterol, and  boost metabolism.  Ingesting coconut oil balances body fat, helping underweight people restore body fat, and overweight people metabolize the fat they already have. This is because they are easily digestible and quickly turn into energy while not spiking  blood sugar levels because insulin is not needed to digest this oil.   Coconut oil also contains the most lauric acid of any plant, a potent anti-microbial that supports the immune system.

So overall...one of nature's blessings.  Try cooking with coconut oil or ingesting a small amount daily ---1 tsp.  Some Ayurveds suggest that you may need to do this for 3-4 months to see weight loss results.

Even though sweet in taste, recent research shows that coconut water actually exhibits blood sugar lowering properties.

Coconut water is one of the beverages most biocompatible  to the human body and its hydration.
