Radiant Life Ayurveda
Greetings!

The key to Ayurveda  weight management???...add and squeeze.  I'll get to that.

Our individual state of health and balance is unique. According to Ayurveda, our perfect weight is particular to us.  Our size and shape are rooted in our constitutional make-up.  We cannot and should not all be thin, regardless of the marketing and current vogue look. Vatas by nature tend toward thinness, however, Kaphas are solid and roundish, and Pittas are strong and medium sized.

When we understand our true nature and live in balance with our natural rhythms, our perfect weight is revealed.  When we panic, perseverate, or try to conquer excess weight or supplement to pack on weight, the worry can create an "emergency state" and we react to stress by storing fat (overweight) and/or muffling a healthy appetite (underweight).  What can we do?

Clearing Ama
We need to slow down and listen to our inner intelligence and engage in mind-body-spirit practices that lead us to a weight that is right for us. If we recognize and embrace our body type by constitution, eat for the dosha we wish to balance, have a strong agni (digestive fire), low ama (toxins in the body), and eat consciously, then all systems support our body to find its resting point in the right weight for us.

Does that seem like a lot? Well ok, as you read this newsletter find a place to begin by selecting a few new foods, spices, or behaviors to add in to your life. Ayurveda does not recommend deprivation as a weight loss strategy such as no carbs or only protein, rather rather add and squeeze. As you take on a few new healthy actions, you squeeze out what is no longer needed because it is no longer attracting you..the desire falls away. Ready now...add...now squeeze...feel better?

Know Your Dosha: Customizing Smart Weight Choices

Do you know which is vata, pitta and kapha?

Kapha Weight Imbalance:

Kapha overweight imbalance is due to low digestive fire and slow metabolism.  Even if you eat small meals you may put on weight.  Digestive impurities from processed and junk food deposit as ama in fat tissue and accumulate over time.

Balance Kapha:  Introduce some fire into your diet.  Eat freshly prepared foods with pungent spices like pepper, fresh ginger, and turmeric. Add green leafy vegetables,  split mung dahl soup, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts,--all cooked, and quinoa cooked with a little olive oil. Exercise is critical to balance Kapha. Add fire with hot spiced water daily.

Pitta Weight Imbalance:

Pittas may have long-term ama build-up and the channels especially around the stomach are clogged which create too much heat in the body. Pittas are usually firey so you would think they would have great digestion. However, if they do not eat regularly to feed that fire, ama will coat their digestive system and lower their metabolism resulting in weight gain. The appetite may be high and there may be excessive thirst or other issues such as heartburn or irritability.

Balance Pitta: Start by eating 3 meals a day at regular times. A stewed apple or oatmeal is a good start for breakfast. Try an herbalized tea of 1/4 tsp each of coriander (detox), licorice (cooling), and fennel (digestion). Eat lots of sweet juicy fruits. Squashes that are white inside like zucchini, asparagus, and yellow slit mung dahl are cooling and detoxing for Pitta.  Quinoa and basmati rice are good.  Cooling spices like fennel and small amounts of cumin and turmeric balance Pitta.

Vata Weight Imbalance

True...Vatas are often thin, but not always. Sometimes Vatas can be too thin and require more nourishment.  Eating warm cooked grounding foods such as winter squashes and a daily rasayana such as chyawanprash can nourish and fortify.  Vatas also can have weight gain.  Vatas are susceptible to mental stress and emotional eating of sweet, sugary foods which may result in weight gain.  When ama is thick, even vatas can become overweight.

Balance Vata: Vatas do best with regular meal times and warm cooked foods that easily produce ojas such as fresh, organic, and whole.  Zucchini is good as are watery soups and light dairy products like panir cheese. Hot spice water supports vata pacifying and you can cook with fresh ginger and cardamom.
