5 things to do with technology during an office visit

Colleagues  |  Community  |  Costs
The use of technology is ubiquitous these days. The American Academy of Family Physicians' Family Practice Management journal recommended that physicians using computers during the visit:
  • Tell patients what they are doing on the computer;
  • Use templates for documentation, but not for structuring patient interviews;
  • Point out information on the screen;
  • Look at patients, not the screen; and
  • Encourage patient participation when inputting information
A 2005 study found that patients' "overall visit satisfaction, satisfaction with the physician's level of familiarity, communication about medical issues and the degree of comprehension with decisions made during the visit all improved significantly" after their physician began using a computer in the exam room.

Skywriter MD revolutionizes physician workflow in this new era of computer technology and medicine by removing the heavy administrative burden of EMR navigation and EMR documentation.  Skywriter MD keeps a physician's attention on the patient and aids in informing and involving the patient.  With verbal directions, the physician or other provider can:
  • Locate patient information for review, such as lab results, radiology images, procedure notes and historical records
  • Enter assessment and plan information into the EMR
  • Transcribe orders and prescriptions
  • Respond to messages
  • Relay instructions to office staff
By offloading these clerical tasks, providers spend a greater portion of their time interacting with patients, which improves care quality and directly contributes to greater job satisfaction.  Additionally, physicians improve their lifestyle by eliminating hours of post-shift documentation, recovering precious family and personal time.

CSHP recognized by UnitedHealthcare
Colorado Springs Health Partners recently earned the UnitedHealthcare PATH Excellence in Patient Service Award.

The PATH program was developed by UnitedHealthcare to help improve outcomes for its Medicare Advantage members by encouraging greater use of preventive health care services. The PATH Excellence in Service Award is based on clinical results that measure how successfully practices have closed gaps in patient care.

Through the PATH program physicians track and identify gaps in patients' care with the goal of improving health outcomes. Physicians who meet the PATH program's clinical and quality goals are recognized annually for their efforts. In 2014, CSHP was among approximately 1,000 practices nationwide that successfully met the program's goals.

"At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is patient outcomes," says Dr. Dennis Schneider chief medical officer of CSHP. "PATH does require extra steps, but the results make it worth it. We get to know our Medicare Advantage patients better, and our relationships with them are stronger. And that makes for a better experience for these patients."
