News & Information from your local medical society
October 2015

Greetings!
Physicians as leaders is not a new concept.  There just seems to be so much more to lead these days.  As healthcare becomes more complex, clinical and business opinion leaders become more important.  There are several opportunities for physicians to be leaders coming up, and taking these opportunities ensures the valuable and important physician perspective is kept in the center.  Leading physicians is what we have for you in this issue.

Staff from the American Medical Association (AMA) will be in our community to gain the valuable insight and perspective of local physicians.  This is part of a new research project lead by the AMA to understand the needs and the daily challenges impacting your professional life, and develop solutions to these challenges

If you are willing to meet for 20-30 minutes for an informal interview, please contact Ray Helm at the AMA (Raymond.helm@ama-assn.org.) This phase of the project aims to speak with 1200 practicing physicians in solo/small/practice settings across the country in order to:
* Understanding physicians' motives, needs and challenges
* Identifying unmet needs of the daily practice of medicine
* Gaining qualitative data to inform potential development of new products and services
* Fostering a two-way communication to align common interests

Physician thought-leaders guide the policies of the AMA, and result in actions such as their analysis and position on health insurer mergers earlier this month. Topics covered during the interview will include physicians' challenges, current and future healthcare trends, real and perceived impact of EHR and other relevant themes affecting your daily life and the lives of people around you.

Ready for ICD-10
Check Up

EPCMS asked our members "Which of the 7 dwarfs are you when it comes to ICD-10?" in an online survey on July 16 and again on September 14.  In July, we were 60% Grumpy - irritated at having to move to ICD-10.

In September, an additional 10% of medical providers in our community were approaching ICD-10 with organized, rational behavior compared to July.  This marks a significant reduction in the number of Grumpy medical providers.  In addition, none are Sneezy (allergic to the upgrade and avoiding ICD-10) or Dopey (unaware of it).

Despite EPCMS bringing two ICD-10 experts to speak to the community and mounting an education and awareness campaign with concrete tools to transition, no one is Happy.  In both surveys, zero respondents reported that they are friendly towards the upgrade to ICD-10.
No industry experts are predicting Tenageddon on October 1st, although a 20% drop in productivity with a corresponding drop in revenue is expected.

Nationwide, recent surveys report that 50% of providers are "Happy" as well as 90% of hospitals and health systems, and 60% of payers. The group that is lagging behind is vendors, with only 40% reporting they are "Happy" when it comes to ICD-10.
