Physician Connection: Work and Well Being
| |
| |
Colleagues | Community | Costs How did you make the decision to become a physician? Did you want to help people? Was it because you enjoy a challenging career?
While some of these reasons may have factored into your choice, your personal values are likely to have initiated your interest in a medical career. On a list of top ten personal values, the majority of physicians ranked benevolence as the highest. Power was ranked as the least important value.
Those physicians who ranked benevolence as an important value also report having a high level of satisfaction in their work, while those who identified power as important report being dissatisfied with the medical profession. Remaining true to your values carries rewards. Those who work in careers that do not match their values are more susceptible to burnout.
5:30 PM May 21 at Cheyenne Mountain Resort, Presented by
Dr. Wahl's insight into the challenges faced by medical professionals comes from an appreciation of the complexity of medical institutions gained as medical director of a psychiatric hospital and vice president of a large medical center's medical staff, and over twenty years assisting medical professionals and others with acute issues of stress, personality, or devotion in order to improve their well-being and expand their capacity to help others.
"Each profession tests the professional at different times in his or her career, " commented Dr. Wahl, whose greatest professional rewards have come from helping these professionals maximize their career performance through healthy adaption of their unique personality traits.
Dr. Wahl is a consultant for the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners, the Colorado Attorney Regulation Counsel, and the Colorado Physicians Health Program with expertise in medical ethics. He has been selected by his colleagues as a 5280 Magazine "Top Doc" for multiple years.

Physician Connection: On track for the future
| |
|
Three years ago, the EPCMS Board of Directors updated its strategic plan, and focused our organization on three pillars:
- Becoming a clearinghouse for exam-room relevant tools and resources;
- Operating at the center of our community's health care system; and,
- Serving as the voice of our community's physicians.
We're implementing this plan by focusing on 3Cs - cutting your cost of providing care, contributing to a stronger health care community, and connecting with your colleagues.
As part of this updated EPCMS we've taken a look at our bylaws, and are considering a few updates to make sure we're both relevant to you in the future and following the best practices in association management.
We're considering a few changes and are opening these concepts for member input over the next sixty days. Afterwards, our Board will look at any feedback and make a final recommendation to the EPCMS membership for consideration at the September Physician Connection. View a summary of the proposed changes here

Harvard Medical School's Center for Primary Care uses staff social workers, community resource specialists, and, eventually, telepsychiatry to make mental health part of its healthcare practice.
Part of an ambitious plan to transform primary care delivery and education, the initiative began four years ago with the opening of its Center for Primary Care. Aimed at developing models of sustainable transformation to help doctors deliver better care under tremendous cost and quality pressure, one of its recent projects is now tackling mental health.
Called the Alice Rosenwald Initiative, the program involves six primary care practices in Massachusetts that are taking steps to integrate mental health services for their patients using a team-based approach. Four of the primary care sites are affiliated with Cambridge, Mass.-based Cambridge Health Alliance, the integrated health system that is also a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School. The other two sites are affiliated with Boston Children's Hospital. Eventually, the mental health integration initiative will be implemented at all six Harvard-affiliated hospitals as well as nineteen practices.
"Mental health disorders are so common that it's really part of the skill set that primary care doctors need to have in order to be a resource and help their patients manage their health," says Russell Phillips, MD, director of the Center for Primary Care.| Link
