From The Executive Director:

As we prepare with our families for the upcoming holidays, ACLAMO too is busy with anticipation.  October featured many events with our community partners, namely Ursinus College, the Norristown Police Depatment and the Upper Main Line Rotary Club, for which we are grateful.

In the coming months, we hope you will share in our efforts to help children and families.

PENCIL SHARPENING TIME

As the last quarter of the tax year gets underway, ACLAMO notes the importance of careful planning. Here are four ways in which your generous donation to ACLAMO Family Centers can reduce your tax liability - and accomplish much more!

1. Your gift will provide vital support and encouragement to Latino children as they work hard to succeed in school.

2. Your gift will help teach adults computer and employment skills.

3. Your gift will show your commitment to helping others less fortunate.

4. Your gift could reduce your taxes!

If your employer has a matching gift program for which your gift to ACLAMO is eligible, it will make your donation go even further toward helping those in need.  Consult your employer, or e-mail Justin Fink (jfink@verizon.net) for assistance.

The larger the gift, the bigger the results.  PLEASE DONATE!

Thank you!

ACLAMO GOES TO COLLEGE
The ACLAMO team includes volunteers from numbers of colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area.  One of these is Ursinus College, located conveniently almost exactly between ACLAMO´s Norristown and Pottstown centers.
Jocelyn shows everyone how she jumps rope.
ACLAMO is a community partner of the Ursinus College Bonner Leader Program and students from this program assist in many ways.  One of these is to invite ACLAMO students to campus numbers of times a year for a variety of activities.  The ACLAMO-Ursinus Field Day in October was held inside the campus field house.  55 ACLAMO students and 30 Ursinus students enjoyed a wide range of activities, providing lots of fun and exercise for all.

ACLAMO MAKES THANKSGIVING "THANKFUL"

Each Thanksgiving, ACLAMO works hard to provide a delicious meal to as many needy families as possible.  Newsletter readers can be a tremendous help.  The below link provides the details.

    STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Gina Davis translates for Sergeant Greenway.

ACLAMO and the Norristown Police Department have a long history of working together to maintain and strengthen community relations.  Sergeant Greenway is an expert at this task and came to ACLAMO in October to listen, answer questions, and provide information to a class of parents in ACLAMO´s Family Literacy Program.

    ACLAMO "GOES GERMAN"

Upper Main Line Rotary Club members enjoy Oktoberfest.

This month, long-time ACLAMO supporters Stacey Ballard and Kim Smith invited Executive Director Juan Guerra to the Rotary's
2nd Annual Oktoberfest Celebration. This event was organized to raise funds for Rotary's community partners and featured a large  beer hall tent, complete with German food, dance and a traditional "Oom-Pah-Pah" band.  ACLAMO was invited to organize a booth where its mission could be shared with those in attendance.

"We are thankful to our 'German' friends", quipped Guerra, "Once again, the Upper Main Line Rotary organized a fun, family oriented event. We are grateful for their support!"

ORGANIZER, MOTIVATOR AND
 LEADER PAR EXCELENCE!

As she smiles at the reader with Philadelphia´s City Hall in the background, Varsovia Fernández gives the impression that she always achieves her goals. Indeed, these days she usually does. But it wasn´t always that way!

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Puerto Rico, Varsovia first wanted to be an architect. But when an X-Acto knife injured her thigh while she was working on a building model, she ended that career aspiration.

Varsovia next began studies leading to a career in computer programming. However during an internship with a small computer start-up company, the owner realized that she was excellent at organizing, motivating, and leading. He convinced her to continue her studies part-time and to join the company as a full-time office manager.  Varsovia has never looked back!  Her effective handling of the management challenges facing a rapidly growing company was a key factor in its growth into a publicly traded corporation with over 200 employees.  Eventually Varsovia moved on, but her career direction was firmly established.

Throughout her career, Varsovia has brought her strengths to numbers of top-level positions, including Vice President of External Affairs at Congreso de Latinos Unidos and currently as President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She also offers her encouragement and support to numerous other groups such as ACLAMO Family Centers.

Varsovia explains that her reason for supporting ACLAMO is because "educating our children through early learning programs and extra-curricular activities is key to enhancing the future workforce in Montgomery County and our nation.  ACLAMO does a fine job with our children in Norristown."

ACLAMO celebrates its 37th year of providing economic, educational, health and cultural opportunities for low-income residents of Norristown and Pottstown, especially those of Spanish language heritage.

ACLAMO stands for Accíon Comunal Latinoamericana de Montgomery County, or  Latin American Community Action of Montgomery County. ACLAMO is derived from the Spanish word "aclamar," which means "to acclaim."
