About Us

One can see the pride in the faces of José and Laura as they receive their certificates of recognition from Juan Guerra

From The Executive Director:

June marks the month for our annual Family Literacy celebration and the conclusion of our After School program, both highlights of a year of great effort on the part of our students and families.

From its inception 12 years ago with 16 participants, our After School program is now at capacity with nearly 100 students. These children, ages 5 through 13 faithfully attended this program receiving homework assistance, tutoring and mentoring from teachers and local college students. We take pride in the fact that our students have maintained a better than 90% attendance record. We also have graduates who themselves attended, stepping up to help their young counterparts - that's how we know this program works!

We are now a few days away from the start of our Summer Bridge program which offers children who would otherwise have little to look forward to, a fun and educational experience these long hot months.

Thank you for your faithful support!

-Juan I. Guerra

HIAS PENNSYLVANIA DOUBLES  IMMIGRATION SERVICES OFFERED AT ACLAMO

Judith Berstein-Baker
Executive Director
HIAS Pennsylvania
In the 1920s, a dangerous tide of anti-Semitism was building in Europe and would eventually lead to the unmitigated disaster of the Holocaust. One of the tragedies of that era occurred when an angry soldier in Poland yanked a handful of hair from the beard of a poor Jewish farmer, Samuel Maslowitz, the great-grandfather of Judith Bernstein-Baker. What that soldier did not know was that his criminal behavior would lead to a series of events which would bring invaluable immigration information advice to ACLAMO families in 2014!

ACADEMIC YEAR END CELEBRATIONS!!

ACLAMO´s Norristown location was full of celebrations in June.

Children and parents graduating from the Family Literacy Program gathered for a special graduation party, featuring remarks by Joseph Leaf, who is retiring as ESL Coordinator at the Norristown Area School District.  Rosa Sanchez, a mother graduating from the Family Literacy Program, was the valedictorian. Rosa described what ACLAMO has meant to her and her son:

"Two years ago, I made the decision to come to ACLAMO with two important goals: to learn English and to have my son gain new and important knowledge useful for his future.  It was an excellent decision, because in this program I received great support and learning.  I don´t have enough words to adequately thank all the people who helped me."

Several days later our lobby was packed with students, families, and volunteers as the After School program celebrated the end of a successful academic year with a lunch and awards ceremony. "Once again, the mothers prepared a delicious assortment of traditional Mexican dishes", said teacher, Marla Benssy. "We are very proud of the many achievements of our participants in the program."

    ACLAMO PREPARES FOR SUMMER BRIDGE

Teacher Marla Benssy works
 on the schedule of activities.
105 kindergarten through eighth grade students are preregistered and eagerly awaiting the June 30 start of ACLAMO´s Summer Bridge Program.

Thanks to the cooperation of Principal John Sweeney and the support of the Norristown Area School District, ACLAMO students will again be using classrooms in the Marshall Street Elementary School this summer.

ACLAMO teachers will be joined by volunteers from Dow Ambassadors, PECO, Penn State, and the Girl Scouts, plus Dr. Bubbles, who promises to enclose groups of students in giant soap bubbles!

Students will be studying math, language arts, science, technology, music and art, as well as taking field trips. The overall goal of the program is to encourage students to keep up their study momentum and to enjoy productive summer activities.

BUCKLE UP!

Miriam, Elena and Maribel listen closely as staff members from the Montgomery County Department of Health explain to a class of mothers the importance of correctly using car seats for children.  Class members also learned how they can arrange for a Norristown Fire Department officer to check and adjust the car seats they are using.

ACLAMO celebrates its 37th year of providing economic, educational, health and cultural opportunities for low-income residents of Norristown and Pottstown, especially those of Spanish language heritage.

ACLAMO stands for Accíon Comunal Latinoamericana de Montgomery County, or  Latin American Community Action of Montgomery County. ACLAMO is derived from the Spanish word "aclamar," which means "to acclaim."
