Spotlight On: An Emerging Artist

Charlotte Knight

This past June, the members of our new No Strings Theatre Emerging Artists Program staged their first show: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The production was a great success, and we were delighted to welcome all the participants to our No Strings Theatre family.  Soprano Charlotte Knight delighted audiences as the Spelling Bee moderator Rona Lisa Peretti. An accomplished classical singer and a graduate of the University of Western Ontario with an Honours degree in Voice, Charlotte's studies have taken her to the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy, the Vancouver Summer Opera Studio, the Halifax Summer Opera Workshop, and Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, to name just a few. Recent stage roles include her work with Toronto Operetta Theatre as Cecily in Earnest, The Importance of Being and Hanna in Cousin From Nowhere; Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème with The Opera Project in Vancouver; and Le Feu in Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges with the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy.

And what has Charlotte been doing since Spelling Bee? Well, she just won the Shaw Festival's "Do Your Best Doolittle" Contest - you can click here to watch!

For her wonderful Eliza impression, Charlotte won tickets to the Shaw Festival's production of Pygmalion, with an opportunity to meet the cast, a trip to the Spa at White Oaks, and a swag bag full of Shaw Festival goodies!

You can see Charlotte next in Toronto Operetta Theatre's HMS Pinafore. Congratulations, Charlotte! We hope to see you back at No Strings Theatre soon!

Music Theatre Roundup: The Buzz

September 27, 2015, was a great day for music theatre fans in NYC, because that was the date of the very first Elsie Fest!  This brand-new open air festival showcased an
amazing lineup of Broadway performers, for one show only.  Headliners included Aaron Tveit (Next to Normal, Catch Me If You Can), Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables), Laura Osnes (Cinderella), Leslie Odom, Jr. (Hamilton), and - of course - festival organizer Darren Criss and Starkid!

Speaking of Darren Criss, on September 13 he joined fellow Hedwigs Neil Patrick Harris and Taye Diggs for the final Broadway curtain call of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, along with the amazing Lena Hall (Yitzhak).  Hedwig ran on Broadway for a surprising 76 weeks, with Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, and creator John Cameron Mitchell also donning the iconic wig in the lead role.  If you missed it, you'll just have to travel a bit farther for another chance: the show will be opening again on London's West End.  No word yet on casting.
