Message from Mrs. Kunze

Yesterday we received a surprise visit from the FL Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Stewart, and representatives from Macy's to announce that Mrs. Laurie Zentz is one of the top 5 finalists for the State Teacher of the Year Award!!  Mrs. Zentz is truly an amazing teacher who is extremely deserving of this recognition!  Mrs. Zentz was presented with a $15,000 check and a $500 gift card from Macy's.  Swiss Point received a $1,000 check.  The State Teacher of the Year Banquet is Thursday, July 14th at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando.  Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Zentz and wishing her good luck in the state competition!!

The 8th grade trip to GradVenture last night was fabulous!  The overall attendance at the parks was low, so students were able to ride many rides and the weather was pleasant.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Mrs. Rizzuto for organizing the entire trip and to all of the 8th grade teachers who chaperoned, so students could have a memorable night with friends!

8th grade students received information about the dance this past week.  Students voted on a theme and selected Royal Ball.  Tickets MUST be purchased by 2pm this Thursday, May 12th.  The cost is $25.  We can accept cash or checks made payable to SPMS.  The event will take place on Friday, May 20th from 7-10pm at Switzerland Community Church on SR 13.  The dress is semi-formal - no jeans, shorts, or sneakers.

The 7th grade field trip to the movies is THIS Friday, May 13th.

Another HUGE THANK YOU to our fabulous PTSO for the luncheon this past Wednesday during Teacher Appreciation Week.  The food from Hero's Eatery was delicious and the Swiss Point umbrella as an appreciation gift was perfect.

Message from Ali Lindenfeld, our PTSO President
Every year, SPMS honors our outstanding 8th graders at an awards ceremony on the last day of school, Thursday, May 26th. This year's event will again be held in Swiss Point's auditorium.  Due to space limitations, the parents of the award recipients will be the only parents invited to attend.  This year PTSO will be helping with setting up for the awards and providing refreshments afterwards for all students.  PTSO is looking for volunteers to help with setting up, serving, and breaking down for the ceremony and refreshments. We are asking for a maximum of 20 adults to help with the event. If you are interested and if you can stay all day (arrive by 8:30am for set up and stay until release at 1pm), please contact PTSO president Ali Lindenfeld at SPMSPTSO@ hotmail.com. Volunteers will be assigned on a first come first served basis. We will also accept monetary donations to help with the cost of the refreshments. Thank you for your support!

Testing continues and we are still in need of proctors.

I have noticed that many parents are bringing in their child's shot record with 2015 dates they received the shot.  Thank you for bringing them in!  If your child had their Tdap shot and you are unsure if we have received it, please do not hesitate to contact Norma Miller at norma.miller@stjohns.k12.fl.us or Cynthia Casper at cynthia.casper@stjohns.k12.fl.us.  The school does have access to the state wide Florida Shots system to review your child's immunization record and print it.  Before you know it school will be starting and your student will not be able to start on the first day or get their schedule. There will be no exceptions! The Tdap shot must be documented on a Florida 680 form. No receipts will be accepted. If you have any questions please email me at joan.beccard@stjohns.k12.fl.us or call 547-8628.

Information Changes
It is imperative that parents call into school to change home phone numbers, cell numbers, work numbers and email addresses as soon as they are changed.  In an emergent situation, it is difficult to get contact parents when the information provided is not correct. Please contact Norma Miller at norma.miller@stjohns.k12.fl.us with changes.

EATING FOR EXAMS!!!

Exam Tip #1
Keep calm and Breakfast on!  Its true breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it gets the brain going.  Protein and carb coupling is a good way to go. A protein example is:  eggs, meat & cheese, A carb example is vegetables, breads and cereals.   The carb makes us full and happy and the protein sustains us.  Did you know eggs contain a nutrient called choline, it is thought to help cognitive performance and improve memory as we age.

Exam Tip #2
Stay Hydrated.  Water allows many of the chemical reactions in our bodies to take place and therefore, the speed at which our brains can work and process information will be affected if we become dehydrated.  Mayo Clinic recommends:
3L of water/day for BOYS, that's 100 oz , or 6 water bottles/day.
2.2L of water/day for GIRLS, that's 80 oz, or 5 bottles of water/day.

Exam Tip #3
Dude, chewable Vit C is not a meal!   Supplements are good but real food is better.  An orange contains Vitamine C, fiber, beta carotene and other minerals.  So, pack whole food items like apples, bananas, clementine's, carrot sticks and dried apricots.

Exam Tip #4
Going bananas with all this testing?  GOOD!  Fruit ranks high among the best foods you can eat for your brain.  Blueberries get a lot of attention because they contain powerful antioxidants and other nutrients.  Natural sugars in fruit offer clean energy so you don't experience the crash that follows consumption of refined sugar, like candy.

Exam Tip #5
It's a no brainer, the better food your brain gets the better you will be able to perform on your tests!  Iron and B vitamins are especially important to maintaining the physical and mental energy necessary to study well.  Iron -containing foods include red meats, cereals and spinach.  Foods that contain B vitamins include whole grains, eggs and nuts.  Fish and soy are other foods that are known to boost your brain by providing the nutrients it needs.

SJMSAA Softball
The Swiss Point Softball Team finished up their season Thursday night (4/28). The team was one of only 4 teams to make it to the playoffs this year. Our semifinal game was against the #2 seed Valley Ridge. Swiss Point jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never let up thanks to solid pitching that was backed up by good defensive play and key hitting.  The 7-4 win put us in the Championship game against the #1 seed Fruit Cove who was undefeated this season. This was another great all around game for the Swiss Point Softball Team. We played to a 2-2 tie and in the last inning with 2 outs Fruit Cove came up with the winning hit. After each of the games yesterday parents and coaches from the other teams were very complimentary of our Swiss Point Softball Team. The best part of some of the comments we received was that they were not only about how well the team played but many complemented the team on their sportsmanship. This was a great season and we are very proud of you.

Looking ahead to next season - many of these ladies that played on the team this season are moving on to high school so the team will need girls to tryout. Tryouts are open to everyone and are typically held in the late January early February time frame. We would like to encourage you if you are interested in trying out and are not currently playing softball on a team to look into playing on one of the Fall programs in the community.
