Good Morning!
You have probably heard that Gov. Scott is requiring validity testing for the new Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) in Reading, Math & new EOCs for Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 before scores are released. Due to the validation process, districts have been told that scores will probably not be released until September or possibly later. This delay in scores has had everyone concerned about Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, since these EOC exams count 30% of the students overall grade.
Yesterday afternoon, FL DOE released a technical assistance paper (TAP) to districts stating that for this year only districts should calculate final course grades and make promotion decisions without regard to the 30% requirement that typically applies in these courses only - Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The TAP states that districts can recalculate the scores this fall once scores are received.
Students must still pass the EOCs for these 3 math courses, if they are trying to earn the Scholar High School Diploma, which everyone taking Algebra 1 Honors or Geometry Honors in middle school should be trying to obtain.
There are NO changes for Civics (middle school), Biology (high school), and US History (high school), since these EOCs were written by Pearson and did not change this year. The scores for these EOCs should be returned to the district early June and will continue to count 30% of the student's overall grade.
I will continue to keep you informed as we receive more information. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at Lisa.Kunze@stjohns.k12.fl.us
