Message from Mrs. Kunze

Students completed the FSA Writing this past week and did an amazing job with our schedule and putting forth great effort on the assessment.  There were a few minor glitches with the 8th graders testing on the computer, but overall everything ran pretty smoothly.  Thank you to everyone who helped by proctoring an exam!

With the addition of District Determined Assessments (DDAs), we have drastically increased the number of proctors needed.  If you are available, please sign-up.  We are in desperate need of your help.  The link to our Sign-Up Genius is below in the Volunteer section.

We found out last night that we placed 3rd place in the jeans drive competition!!  Congratulations to the Leadership class, Mrs. Huber, and to all the Raiders who brought in jeans. Overall, the competition collected 42,346 jeans for homeless people around the country.  That is pretty amazing!  Everyone should be very proud of our efforts and what we have done to help those in our community.  The 3rd place prize is a donation of $500 to a charity of our choice.

10th place - 930 jeans - Cumberland HS

9th place - 999 jeans - Troy MS

8th place - 1,200 jeans - Alice Deal MS

7th place - 1,555 jeans - United Township HS

6th place - 1,788 jeans - Linked Together (community group)

5th place - 2,910 jeans - Hardin HS

4th place - 4,260 jeans - Taft HS

3rd place - 6,382 jeans - Swiss Point MS

2nd place - 6,569 jeans - South Ancorage HS

1st place & 3 time champs with 7,279 jeans - Harriet G. MS

As you know, we collect (anonymously) questions/problems from students during the year pertaining to middle school life in a similar fashion as "Dear Abby" articles.  We call ours "Dear Raider Aide".  We have a student giving the advice.  Here's our anonymous question/problem for this article:

"Dear Raider Aide, I am so mad at my parents because they won't let me bring my best friend with us on our spring break trip."

(Response written by Christina Flores, a 7th grader):  One good thing about vacations is that it is a good time for families.  Kids get to see their friends every day at school, and sometimes on the weekends.  And having another person to watch out for makes it harder for your parents.

Changes in Personal Information

Parents, your help is needed. I spend many hours each week calling parents when students are sick, injured, etc. However, I find when I call home numbers I  often get a message that says "this number is disconnected." I call work numbers and they say "they have not worked here in 5 years." Then your student says " my parents got new cell numbers but I don't know what they are." Please notify our computer operator, Norma Miller, at 547-8626 for changes in your contact numbers. You can also e-mail
Norma.miller@stjohns.k12.fl.us  We will also change it on your paper copy emergency card.

Raider Band News

Many of our band students will be performing at the Music Performance Assessment (MPA) this weekend. Best wishes to our Raider Bands!!!

During band classes on Monday and Tuesday, March 9th and 10th, students will have the opportunity to have their band photo taken with their instrument for a keepsake.  Sheets will be sold for $16 each, ordered online and delivered in the spring.  More information is coming soon in an email to band parents.

Fundraisers
To fund our excellent band program we are always excited to offer carefully chosen fund raisers.

Dunkin Donuts Coffee should be delivered before spring break.  Thank you for supporting our coffee sale!

We have a fundraiser with Bozard Ford that continues on from last year. Purchase an oil change certificate for $20: a $35 value. These certificates are good until June 1, 2015 and ALL of the funds raised stay with our band program. Thank you Bozard Ford. Forms again are available with Mrs.Zentz or contact Michelle Bedell, michellebedell@gmail.com.

Another continuing fundraiser is our car magnets for $5. They are in Mrs Zentz's office and are available the day you send in your money. Wear your school and band pride on your car!

We will also have one more Firehouse Sub night this year. Put March 25th on your calendars now and treat yourself to a night of no cooking! Show the SPMS Band flyer when you order and we receive a percentage of your order. This can be done at the Firehouse on 210 or on 13, whichever is more convenient for you.  Firehouse Sub Flyer

Our last fundraising opportunity right now is Chip In for Youth Tickets for The Players on May 5 - 10, 2015. These tickets are available for $45, cheaper than purchasing them elsewhere, AND we keep $25 of that for our band. Another perk is that they can be used any day of the tournament. You can order them directly by going to  www.chipinforyouth.com and entering our code, which is SPMSRAIDERBAND. The deadline to order these tickets is April 24th, 2015.

Thank you for supporting our fantastic Raider Bands!!!
