Important Dates for 8th grade parents!

8th grade Dance - Thursday, June 5th from 7-10pm at San Juan Del Rio.  Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by May 12th.

Message from Mr. Purvis, Director of Transportation

The routes for 14-15 will be a part of the School Board packet for the May 13, 2014 School Board Meeting.

If approved, the routes will be made available through the District's web site; and appropriate public announcements will be made.

Our intent is to provide parents with the route information prior to the end of this school year and to encourage their input . We will follow-up in late July 2015 with route/stop information post cards. These are our efforts to identify any route issues early, working toward a smooth school opening next August.

SAC Needs Assessment Survey

Each year we ask parents, students & staff to complete a Needs Assessment Survey.  We use this survey to help us make improvements within the school.  For the next few Fridays I will respond to some of the concerns from the survey.

There were several complaints similar to this one...............

Most teachers do not respond to emails in a timely manner (48hours) or some do not respond at all.

The district expectation for every employee in the district is to respond to emails or phone calls with 48 hours.  This could be longer if the email was sent on a Friday and the teacher does not read emails over the weekend.  We stress to teachers the importance of good communication with parents.  If you have a teacher who is not responding to emails, please let me know.

There were a few comments similar to this one...........

The sports program at SPMS needs to be looked at.  Too much politics involved and it's very discouraging for a large number of your students.  Some sports at SP have gotten the reputation of being a joke because of the politics.

The school only "owns" volleyball & basketball.  These are the only 2 sports that are officially ran through the school that I hire coaches and oversee.  The other sports teams on campus - football, cheer, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, etc - all belong to the St. Johns Middle School Athletic Association, which was started a few years ago by parents.  The district has given the association permission to use school names and facilities to offer after school sports, but everything is ran through them.  I have no say in what coaches are hired, who makes the team or the policies of the association.  All complaints or concerns would need to be directed to the SJMSAA President, Curtis Carter.  My suggestion would be to get involved.  The association is ran by parents, so you have a voice.  A link to the association website is below.

Camp Safe Haven
Camp Safe Haven is a free, grief support camp for children ages 6-12 who have lost someone close to them.  This is a camp that is designed to help children understand their feelings of loss and find peace.  The trained staff and volunteers provide an opportunity for fun and therapeutic activities which will help them work through their feelings of grief.  This camp is open to any child who has lost a loved one.  The loved one did not have to be a patient of Haven Hospice in order for the child to attend.  They support all those in our communities who have suffered a loss.

Current 6th grade parents! NEVER TOO EARLY!

It is never too early to get your child their Tdap shot,  7th grade immunization requirement.   As soon as they have their 11th birthday they can get their Tdap shot.   If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call me. This school year we had 108 students that did not have their Tdap two  weeks before school was to start!     Please don't wait till the last minute!   This shot must be documented on a Florida Certification of Immunization.

To all the 6th grade parents who have turned in the shot records for their student who has received their Tdap shot.  Keep up the good work!

Applicants Interested in Serving on SJC Planning & Zoning

The St. Johns County School District is seeking applicants interested in serving on the St. Johns County Planning and Zoning Agency (PZA).

Florida growth management legislation requires all counties to have a School Board appointment as a non-voting member to participate in discussions on rezoning amendments to the land use plan that impact density.  The St. Johns County Commission has agreed to go beyond the legislative requirements to make the School Board appointment a full voting member of the PZA.

Applicant must be a resident of St. Johns County.  Selection will be based on a number of factors including the applicant's involvement in the county and in public education.  Deadline for applications is noon on March 31.

Each applicant will need to attend the workshop with the School Board on Tuesday, May 6 at 8:30 am.  The School Board plans to make its appointment at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at 9 am.

Applications may be obtained on the School District Website at
www.stjohns.k12.fl.us under "What's New" or by calling Marcia Holmes, executive secretary for Facilities Planning & Growth Management, at 547-7680 or in person at the School Board Administration building at 47 Orange Street, St. Augustine.

Blood Shortage Appeal

Since the holidays we have been either short or critical on most blood types. On a national level, blood donations have been trending downward, but usage continues to stay at high levels.   If we have a large need like we did last week when Mayo performed 3 O+ liver transplants in one day, we can easily become critically low on any given blood type. Please contact the Blood Alliance at www.igiveblood.com or call 824-1891.
