Policy Reminders
|
New Charging Policy in the Cafeteria
Student are encouraged to ask about their account balance, but are told verbally of a low or negative status of their account. Absolutely no ala cart items can be charged. Students who do not have the required payment will be allowed to charge up to two meals (5.20). The charge will appear on the point of sale system.
If a student has an outstanding charge and does not have the required payment after two meals have been charged, the student will be served a cheese sandwich and a milk without prior notice.
If a student has an outstanding charge and has been provided a sandwich and milk after five instances, the student will not be provided any further meals without payment.
Use of the online payments system is recommended to alleviate any problems with student not turning in lunch money. This program gives you access to monitor what your child is purchasing and their account balance. The website is www.paypams.com
Cell Phones
On page 23 of the St. Johns County Student Code of Conduct there is an entire section on cell phones. Paragraph 1 states: Students may possess cellular telephones and other wireless communication devices at school, on buses, and at school function. However, they must be turned off, stored in student's backpack, purse, locker or vehicle. The device shall not be used during the school day without administrative approval or on school buses to and from school. Failure to comply may result in the device being confiscated. Repeated failure to comply will be considered defiance of school rules. Paragraph 3 states: When there is reasonable suspicion that a student has used a cell phone or wireless communicative device in violation of the Code of Conduct or other school rules, or for an unlawful purpose, the school administration may review the phone's call log, voice messages, text messages, photographs and any other applications to furtherance of its investigation of the suspected violation.
We have communicated this district policy to the students every quarter in our behavior expectation assemblies. We have communicated that their cell phone may not be used on campus at all, which includes in the hall or outside at dismissal or upon arrival to school. We will no longer ask a child to just put their cell phone away. The phone will be confiscated. Students who are not feeling well need to go to the clinic to call their parent not call or send a text from their cell phone. PLEASE talk to your child about following school rules. We have a phone in the main office that students are allowed to use. Thank you for your support.
Do you have a New Cell or Home Phone Number....maybe new email address? Parents, if you have a new home number, work number, cell number or e-mail address, please notify Norma Miller in Guidance. Contact her at 547-8626 or
millern@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Media Center News

Congratulations to Jenny Hanson, Amanda Higley, Lexi Smith, Emma Geiger, Sarah Kroehler, and Maanasi Vadlamani (alternate) who placed first in the county-wide 2014 Middle School Battle of the Books competition.
Melanie Tahan, Director for Instructional Technology, Media Services and Instructional Resources for St. Johns County School District, wrote the following concerning the Battle:
The 2014 SJCSD Middle School Sunshine State Battle of the Books was held in the Fullerwood Auditorium on April 1st. It was an extremely close match throughout with the final score being a difference of only one point between first, second and third places. It was exciting to see the determination and knowledge of the students as well as the supportive parent audience that were in attendance.
The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) is a program co-sponsored by the Office of Library Media and the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME). Started in 1984 this reading motivation program for students in grades 3-8 is designed to entice students to read high interest, contemporary literature for personal enjoyment. The long term goal of the program is to nurture lifelong readers who will continue to read for information needs and personal pleasure.
So once more, a huge congratulations to the Switzerland Point Battle of the Books Team for winning the 2014 SJCSD Middle School Battle! They were able to take home the trophy again after having won last year's competition as well.

Applicants Interested in Serving on SJC Planning & Zoning
The St. Johns County School District is seeking applicants interested in serving on the St. Johns County Planning and Zoning Agency (PZA).
Florida growth management legislation requires all counties to have a School Board appointment as a non-voting member to participate in discussions on rezoning amendments to the land use plan that impact density. The St. Johns County Commission has agreed to go beyond the legislative requirements to make the School Board appointment a full voting member of the PZA.
Applicant must be a resident of St. Johns County. Selection will be based on a number of factors including the applicant's involvement in the county and in public education. Deadline for applications is noon on March 31.
Each applicant will need to attend the workshop with the School Board on Tuesday, May 6 at 8:30 am. The School Board plans to make its appointment at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at 9 am.
Applications may be obtained on the School District Website at www.stjohns.k12.fl.us under "What's New" or by calling Marcia Holmes, executive secretary for Facilities Planning & Growth Management, at 547-7680 or in person at the School Board Administration building at 47 Orange Street, St. Augustine.

Cinderella at BTHS
Imagine this! Twinkling lights, beautiful music, twirling dresses, and two people meeting for the first time only to fall instantly in love. The ageless story of Cinderella and her Prince Charming has returned to the Bartram Trail High School stage, and it's better than ever!
From April 10th to April 13th, you can experience the romance, excitement, and wonder of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella produced by R&H Theatricals. Evening performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:00 PM with a matinee on Sunday at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $10/guest and can be purchased at the door beginning one hour prior to each performance. Advanced tickets are available by calling (904)-547-8340; extension 22574 or emailing ava.fixel@stjohns.k12.fl.us
If you're looking for even more fun, you can be part of Cinderella's magical experience by attending the Cinderella Meet and Greet in the courtyard immediately following the Sunday matinee. Take pictures with Cinderella and her friends while posing like royalty with a real princess carriage and horses! The cost of the Cinderella Meet and Greet is $5/child. Parents are complimentary. Be sure to dress in your best fairy tale costume. To capture this memory, make sure to bring your camera.
Remember to join us for an enjoyable, fantastical, fanciful, and all around fun time with Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella!

On a national level, blood donations have been trending downward, but usage continues to stay at high levels. If we have a large need like we did last week when Mayo performed 3 O+ liver transplants in one day, we can easily become critically low on any given blood type. Please contact the Blood Alliance at www.igiveblood.com or call 824-1891.
