Switzerland Point Middle School is excited to offer two technology courses, Computer Application in Business 1 & Career Planning and Computer Applications in Business 2, for all 7th graders next year. Both courses will provide an opportunity for students to engage in advanced course work in computer literacy skills and career exploration.
During the first semester, students will take Computer Applications in Business 1 & Career Planning. This course will assist students in making informed decisions regarding their future academic and occupational goals and to provide information regarding careers. Course work includes intermediate keyboarding, intermediate word processing, intermediate electronic presentation, intermediate computer hardware, intermediate Internet, introductory spreadsheet, and soft skills for business applications. In addition, students engage in online career explorations using FACTS.org to complete a personalized academic and career plan. For example, students will develop a career and education plan that includes short and long-term goals, high school program of study, and postsecondary/work goals. In addition, students will participate in the Reading Plus program, a research based online program that helps students improve silent reading comprehension and reading rate.
During the second semester, students will participate in Computer Applications in Business 2. Course work includes advanced keyboarding, advanced word processing, advanced hardware, advanced Internet, intermediate spreadsheet, introductory digital design, and soft skills for business applications. In addition, students will participate in the Reading Plus program, a research based online program that helps students improve silent reading comprehension and reading rate.
Competition of both courses will prepare students for the 8th grade elective - Introduction to Informational Technology.
Introduction to Informational Technology is a high school course that gives students a practical arts elective credit. This course also allows the student to meet the online course requirement needed for graduation. Students will take Microsoft certification exams in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and possibly Excel. Introduction to Informational Technology is the entry level course for 6 of the Career Academies in the District, including the VyStar Academy at Bartram HS. Students who take this course are given preferential consideration when joining the academy and go directly into the 2nd year elective as a 9th grader.
