Monday, Oct 21st - Black Day - Exams in LA & Soc Studies

Wednesday, Oct. 23rd - Black Day - Exams in Sci & Math

Science Fair - we are listening!
The science department met and decided that by forcing advanced students to complete a science fair project we are causing unnecessary stress among students and teachers. The teachers felt that forcing everyone to participate was not creating a passion for science in our students. Please look on Edmodo or in your email for a message from your advanced science teacher explaining what needs to be completed and what is optional. We are hoping that some students will still want to participate in our school fair in December in hopes of representing SPMS in the district fair.
Common Core Standards
Below is a link to a newspaper article from the SunSentinel that will be helpful if you are still confused about what all the fuss is about over Common Core standards.
Common Core Q&A: Explaining new standards for Florida students
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/os-common-core-qanda-20131004,0,4401216.story
Students using science equipment for a hands-on approach to learning. Thank you parents for your science donations and teaming with us to make a difference. We appreciate you! Yankee Candle Fundraiser
Yesterday we kicked off the Yankee Candle Fundraiser with the students. Our goal is $5000 to go towards technology for the school. If every student sells $8, our goal will be reached. Every student received a packet that contained a 36 page catalog, prize flyer, order form and information sheet. The fundraiser will run from October 3-October 17. Out of town family and friends can also shop. Here's how: 1. Go to www.yankeecandlefundraising.com 2. Click on the Seller Login button 3. Fill out the Sign up to be a Seller form 4. SPMS group number is 990036173 to register 5. Follow instructions to send shopping emails to friends and family. Click here to view information flyer. Please encourage your child to sell, sell, sell! Red Ribbon Week We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week Oct. 21-24 which is a national week where schools across the country promote awareness of the dangers of using drugs. We will start showing drug awareness commercials on Friday, Oct 18th on the morning announcements. If you would like to preview these commercials/short videos please click on the following links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_56BQmY_e8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXLrMGVj6ss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkOO4tchyAY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bgl7jXtLAwY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=392jFOsvpoQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHYFS7Fvy34 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4xmFcrJexk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuh2w2sFRMI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUWnmChsvQ0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOoh8clYREA Edmodo Update Remember that the parent view of Edmodo is very different from the student view. You may want to use your child's account. As we continue to use this program if you have suggestions on how we could make things better, please email me.

Current 6th grade parents!
It is not too early to start preparing for your child's 7th grade immunization requirement. As soon as they have their 11th birthday they can get their Tdap shot. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call me. This school year we had 108 students that did not have their Tdap two weeks before school was to start! Please don't wait till the last minute! This shot must be documented on a Florida Certification of Immunization.
Parents and students, we have many students with asthma. What can you do to help keep them in school and not trigger an asthma attack? Please don't wear anything with a strong odor like perfume, talcum powder, cologne or body spray into the school. All of these things are asthma triggers. Perfume can also be a trigger for a migraine. |

There will be information about resources available for Mom and Dad. (Bottled water will be available but no food or candy will be served at this event so you might want to bring your own snacks.) A big thank you to Publix for donating the pumpkins and bottled water.
We are also looking for students who want to volunteer to help out with this event. It would be a great opportunity for those needing service hours. Chili's Fundraiser Chili's at Bartram Crossing on Old St. Augustine Road is hosting a fundraiser for us on Tues. Oct. 8 from 11am-11pm. If you take in our coupon they will donate 10% of your check to us. We will be giving these funds to HEAL. So please put it on your calendar now!! Please let your family, friends and neighbors know as well. Click here to print coupon. Contact Linda Gomolka for any questions or information at lgomolka@jcpcares.org or 327-6144

Ancient City Kids Day will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 11am-3pm at Francis Field on Castillo Drive. This event, coordinated by local agencies, is a day of fun-filled activities for children and families. The event is free for the public, and will include over 40 youth service agencies offering carnival style games and activities, arts and crafts, contests for the kids and free entertainment all day plus Smokey the Bear. No child will leave empty-handed as t-shirts, prizes or goodies are given out all day. Educational information on resources in our community is available for parents. The only cost to the public will be for food or drinks. Ancient City Kids Day has grown to be one of St. Augustine's biggest youth activities, and is a popular event for the whole family.
