Message from Mrs. Kunze
Change to online graduation requirement
Your child is required to take a high school credit course online before he/she graduates. The district has options available to help students meet this requirement, so the course does not have to be taken at home on the student's own time. Many of our 8th grade students however, take a course during 8th grade or over the summer, so they are done with this requirement before they start high school. The Driver's Education course has counted as meeting this online requirement until now. Starting July 1, 2013 Driver's Education no longer meets the online graduation requirement. If your child has started Driver's Education online, the course MUST be completed before July 1st for the course to satisfy the online graduation requirement.
Explanation of exams
I have been asked to explain some of the exams that our students are taking.
EOC = End of Course Exam
Currently the only EOC's administered are written by the State and administered state-wide. These State written EOC's are called Tier 1 exams.
Examples of Tier 1 EOC's....
Civics EOC, which Swiss Point 7th graders field tested this year. The test will be administered state-wide next year and will count as 30% of the student's overall Civics grade. Initially, the State said that this exam would be pass/fail and used for promotion starting in 14-15. During this current legislative session the change was made to count the Civics EOC as 30% and not have it count pass/fail for promotion. We are excited about this recent change.
Algebra EOC - The Algebra EOC is a pass/fail exam to earn high school credit in Algebra. This EOC MUST be passed in order to earn a high school diploma. Our district also counts this exam as 30% of the students overall Algebra course grade.
Geometry EOC - The Geometry EOC is 30% of the students overall Geometry grade. Originally, the State said this exam would also be pass/fail to earn credit. During the current legislative session the change was made to not count the Geometry EOC as pass/fail and for it to count as 30% of the course grade.
US History and Biology EOCs - These 2 EOC's are administered in high school. The exam counts as 30% of the overall course grade. The Biology EOC was initially a pass/fail exam to earn credit. Again, during the current legislative session Biology will no longer be pass/fail, but will remain as 30% of the overall course grade.
Tier 2 & 3 EOC's
Starting in 14-15 EVERY course not tested with a State EOC or tested by PARCC (Reading & Math) or FCAT 2.0 (8th grade Science) will have a Tier 2 or Tier 3 EOC.
Tier 2 exams will be exams written by the district using State provided banks of questions. Examples of Tier 2 middle school exams will be Science 1 & 2, World History, M/J US History, PE, Band, Art, Beginning Spanish, Drama, Band, Critical Thinking, etc.
Tier 3 exams will be written by a consortium of districts for courses that are have low enrollment. An example of a middle school Tier 3 exam might by Latin or Chinese, if there are only a small number of schools in several districts that offer these languages.
FCAT 2.0
Currently students in middle school take the FCAT 2.0 in Reading, Math, 8th grade Science & 8th grade Writing.
We will continue to administer the FCAT 2.0 during the 13-14 school year.
PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers)
The Common Core standards, which is a national movement with 44 states adopting these standards will be tested through PARCC exams in Florida.
There are Common Core Standards for Language Arts, Math and Literacy Skills in Science, Social Studies & Technical Courses.
The PARCC exams are slated to start in 14-15 in Reading and Math and will test the Common Core Standards. When the PARCC exams are in place, the only FCAT 2.0 exam that middle school students will continue to take will be 8th grade Science.
District Exams
The district has written quarter exams that are administered district-wide to help teachers and students prepare for the EOC exams currently in place and that will start in 14-15. These exams were written by local teachers and can change each year as the district adjusts the curriculum maps for each course to ensure that course content is taught before the EOC is administered.
I hope that this information helps clarify some of the confusion in regards to exams. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email me at kunzeL@stjohns.k12.fl.us
Will your child be attending Bartram next year?
John Rorabaugh, Bartram Trail High SAC Chair, would like to extend an invitation to parents of rising BTHS 9th graders to their next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, May 21st at 6:00pm in the BTHS Media Center.
Chess Club Announcement
Due to some unruly students this week, there was behavior resulting in damaged chess sets, spilled drinks and additional messes. Therefore chess club will no longer be open to anyone who wants to come. For the last few weeks of this year, any student wishing to come to chess club must bring an essay discussing one of three topics: what they enjoy about chess, what they have learned while playing chess, or an interesting piece of chess history. The essay must be handwritten (no cutting and pasting from the internet) and be at least two paragraphs long. The student must show the essay to the study hall teacher before they can leave to go to chess club. If a student brings the essay (neatness doesn't count, but it has to be legible) and actually plays, he or she can stay. If a student causes trouble, they will be returned to their classroom.
Chess Tournament
The chess tournament held today was a success. There were 17 students who participated and had a great time. A special THANK YOU to Mr. Hayes, parent volunteer, and to Mr. William Bowman, Jacksonville Chess Club President for running the tournament. Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Pollinger, who volunteered to help supervise.
Important Testing Dates - PLEASE mark your calendars!
Tuesday, May 21st Geometry Honors students will take the State's Geometry EOC. This test will be 30% of the student's overall grade.

Host Families Needed for 28 days in July
Spanish exchange students arrive in the area on Sunday, June 30 and return to Spain on Friday, July 26th. Local families are needed to host these students. Host families provide a room, meals, limited transportation and a warm supportive environment. Students are to have chores and be treated like a family member not a guest. All students speak English and come with their own spending money and medical insurance. We have two field trips a week in which host family members are welcome to come along at group discounted pricing. We will be visiting Universal Studios, Sea World, Daytona Lagoon as well as local sights.
This is a great program for families with younger children as it's a great way to start off the summer with a responsible teenager in the home especially when day care is no longer available for your 5 th & 6th graders. Enrich your life with an exceptional young person and open doors to learn about a new culture. Hosting can change your world!
