Message from Mrs. Kunze

Congratulations

Congratulations to Dawson Lear, SPMS' Outstanding Student Volunteer of the Year and Daniel Moody, our Outstanding Adult Volunteer of the Year.  On Thursday, April 4th a reception was held by the district to honor the outstanding volunteers from each school.  Kathleen Roberts, Front Office Receptionist, was honored as well as SPMS' Volunteer Coordinator. Dawson Lear has volunteered at Timberlin Creek Elementary for 4 years helping teachers and with karate.  Mr. Moody helps Mrs. Joyner's class every Wednesday with students in the PAES lab.  He has volunteered every Wednesday for the last 2 years to help the special needs students learn skills needed for future employment.  Again, congratulations to both!

New Swiss Point Faculty member

Christina Talbot is the newest member of Swiss Point in the Science Department.  Ms. Talbot has 15 years of teaching experience - 3yrs in middle school, 8yrs in high school and 4yrs with FL Virtual.  Please help me welcome her to Swiss Point!

Non-core courses for next year

Since all middle schools will be on a 7 period day next year, students will take a 3rd non-core course.  Below is what will be added at Swiss Point.

ALL rising 6th graders will take a course in the computer lab. They will spend time using Reading Plus, reading program to improve fluency and comprehension, learning to type and then learning basic Word and PowerPoint skills.

Rising 7th graders will take middle school Spanish 1. Students were given a sheet to opt out of Spanish 1 if they wanted to take Chorus instead.

For the last few years we have tried to offer choice to the 8th graders.  Over a hundred rising 8th grade students had selected art as on of their choices, so we will be adding a 2nd art teacher to accommodate their requests.  8th graders will also have the option of taking middle school Spanish 1.

Expectation Assemblies

Students attended expectation assemblies this week to remind them of school and district policies for behavior expectations.  Students were all reminded that if they receive ISD or OSS this semester, they will NOT be allowed to attend the end-of-the-year trip.  Students have been asked to think of consequences before they act.  PLEASE talk to your child to review your behavior expectations.

Relay for Life

Copies of a flyer regarding Relay for Life will be sent home with students on Tuesday, April 9th.  Relay for Life of Bartram Trail will be May 4-5 with the Luminaria Ceremony on Saturday, May 4 at 9:00 pm.  The flyer allows you to buy luminaries to remember those lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer and rejoice with those who have fought the disease and won!

Click here for a sneak peak of the flyer.  Extra copies will be available in the cafeteria during lunches.

Attendance Issues:

There have been many students absent due to sickness the past several weeks.    In the event of an absence, a note signed by a parent is required within 48 hours of return, stating the student's name, date of absence, the specific reason for the absence and a parent's signature.  The excuse note must be brought to the attendance office before or during homeroom.  Upon return from an absence, it is the student's responsibility to communicate with teachers about any make-up assignments.  A computer generated phone call may be expected as a courtesy notification of each absence; however, a written note signed by a parent is still required within 48 hours of returning to school.

Example of an Excuse Note:

Date

Dear Principal or teacher:

Please excuse Johnny Smith's absence on Thursday, September 7, 2012.  He had a sore throat.

Thank you, Mrs. C. Smith

The following reasons for absences are valid and will be excused:  illness, serious illness or death in the immediate family, health related appointments, emergency medical or dental attention, authorized religious holidays, and absences approved in advance by the administration. The form to request a Pre-approved Absence may be found on the Switzerland Point website.

Any student arriving after the end of the third (3rd) period or dismissed prior to the end of the third (3rd) period will be considered absent for the day.  Any student arriving after 10:57am or dismissed prior to 10:57am will be considered absent for the day.

After 15 total days of absences(excused or unexcused), a student must have a doctor's verification for all subsequent absences due to illness for the absences to be excused.  If a parent writes a note after 15 total days of absences it will be recorded as "unexcused with note".

A student is deemed truant after five (5) unexcused absences within a calendar month, or ten (10) unexcused absences within a 90-calendar-day period.  The parent will receive written notice by mail regarding the unexcused absences and the consequences if the truancy continues.

Please be certain to carefully read the Student Code of Conduct concerning Student Attendance for further explanation.  Regular attendance plays a very important part in determining success at school.

Phone Number Changes

Please notify the front office(547-8621) of any changes in your student's emergency card such as change of home number, new cell number or new work number.  This is vital in case of an emergency and we are trying to reach you.

Procedure for Student to Carry Over the Counter Medication

An adult must bring in all medications  to the clinic. If you want your student to be able to carry an over the counter medication you must have an over the counter medication form filled out with the medication that you bring. It must be in an original sealed container. Your student fills out the bottom of the form stating that they will not share this medication with anyone. This form can be found on the SPMS website by clicking "Parents" at the top and then clicking on "Clinic/Health Information" on the left side of the page. There you will find both the prescription and the over the counter med sheet. You must have a doctor fill out our St. Johns County prescription form when you bring in a prescription that you want the nurse to give. I cannot give the first dose of any medication in case of a reaction. Call me or e-mail me if you have any questions.

Requirements for 7th Grade

VERY IMPORTANT! Rising 7th graders can NOT attend classes or receive their schedule in August without proof of Tdap vaccine! This shot must be documented on a DH 680(Florida shot record) Please do not wait till the last minute to get this!  If you have any questions, please contact Joan Beccard in the clinic at 547-8628.Check with your physician to see if your student has already had the shot and have them document the Tdap along with your student's other immunizations on a DH 680(Florida shot record).

NEW INFORMATION:

If you choose to go to a walk in clinic you must ask the clinic to print you out a hard copy of the 680 shot record which shows the Tdap your child received. A receipt from the clinic will not be accepted! If you choose to go to the St. Johns County Health Department (825-5055) please call ahead to see if you qualify for their Vaccines for Children Program.

Internet Safety Highly Recommended by Dr. Joyner

and it is FREE to the Public

Over 95% of teens use social networking

ˇ       Last year over 500,000 kids had their online identity stolen

ˇ       85% of teens have been cyber bullied at least once

ˇ       Sexting: 71% of teen girls and 67% of teen boys have participated in posting/sending sexually suggestive content.

These are only a few reasons why Dr. Joyner stresses the importance of registering for the Community Empowerment Series final event featuring Cyber Expert,  Theresa Payton.  Circle the date, Saturday, April 27th at Nease High School, doors open at 9:00am.  You can't afford to miss this opportunity to learn from one of the country's leading experts regarding Internet Safety and Security.  Payton was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) in the White House, the only female to hold that position, and is listed as the top 25 most influential people for online security.

She will be discussing cyber bullying, online identity theft, cell phone safety and other areas of cyber safety.  From teachers, to guidance counselors, to parents  and especially students, this event should be mandatory.  Sure, some proms are in the evening, but before your kids go to prom and start posting those pictures to their Facebook and Instagram profiles, shouldn't they find out the consequences first?  There will be plenty of time to get ready for prom and these few hours in the morning of an education of their digital future will actually provide them with the tools to insure their digital footprint for a bright future.

Click here  to view flyer.  See you on Saturday the 27th!  Online registration is recommended.  See flyer.
