Congratulations to Cameron Wellington, Manoj Kandakumar, Lauren Saarela, Becca Jaeger, Taylor Friedman and Sneha Kapil who placed first in the county Battle of the Books competition. The competition is based on the 15 Sunshine State Young Reader's Award books. In the county contest, teams from across the county come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. SPMS is so proud of our winning team and thanks them for all their hard work SPMS Summer Reading This summer you will select your own books for summer reading. Students going into 6th grade are to read at least 250 pages. Students going into 7th grade are to read at least 350 pages. Students going into 8th grade are to read at least 450 pages. The number of books you read is up to you, as long as you reach the page requirement for your grade level. Use this form to complete the information for each book you read and have your parent sign beside each book listed. Put your name on the top right corner of this paper and give it to your language arts teacher the first day of school. Be prepared to participate in a class activity in which you will discuss your reading and make book recommendations to other students. Click here to print the form. - A. We were one of fifteen middle schools awarded the opportunity to offer a technology class. Students will get a certification for Microsoft products. Students who pass this certification will earn money back for our school. Students will earn a high school credit. There are 6 high school academies that this class will count as an introduction course. Partial funded through "Work Force Florida" who will provide support to our school and additional supplemental materials.
- B. Course selections are going on now, information was mailed home. Due by May 25th
- C. Rising 7th and 8th grade parent night was May 14th. Over 100 parents came

Keeping The Kids Sharp During the Summer If you are looking for a way to improve your child's skills during the summer you may want to consider utilizing SOAR (Student On-line Achievement Resources). SOAR is an internet based application on which students take assessments aligned to state standards and then directs them to individualized tutorials to improve skills where needed. Parents can check on their child's progress and are provided with resource materials. SOAR is brought to you by the Military Impacted Schools Association (MISA). Monday, June 4th at 9am we will have the 8th grade awards ceremony in the gym at Swiss Point. Every student will have their name called and will be given a certificate of completion. All parents are welcome to attend!
8th Grade Textbook/Lock Return
8th graders may (it is optional) return their books/locks on Tuesday, May 29th during the extended homeroom time from 7:40-8:15. 8th grade students who have not returned books/locks can do so during study hall on Monday, June 4th.

Pre-Excused Absences
Students planning a future absence MUST submit a completed "Pre-Excused Absence Form" to the attendance office at least one week prior to their absence. The form is available on line or from the attendance office.
Vaccine Requirements
Students entering,repeating or transferring into the 7th grade will need to provide to the school Guidance Department proof of their Tdap vaccine before they can receive their schedule for the 2012/2013 school year. It is not too early to take care of this requirement. You can go to your private physician or the St. Johns County Health Department(825-5055). If you choose to go to a walk-in clinic,a receipt will NOT be accepted as proof of the Tdap vaccine. The vaccine must be documented on a Florida shot record. If you have any questions,please call Joan Beccard at 547-8628.

Winterguard Tryouts
Wintergurad tryouts were held this past week and the students that were selected for the 2012-2013 Winterguard Squad will be posted as soon as they are available.
SPMS Basketball Camp
Switzerland Point Middle School will be hosting its Annual Summer Basketball Camp for boys & girls ages 6 - 14. The camp will have three one - week sessions June 11-14 (1A session is closed), June 25-28, and August 6-9 (Notice this session is now completely booked and is not available). This is a fun filled camp where "Teaching Never Stops". Don't be left out of this year's camp because the camp fills up fast. SJMSAA Football Team
The Swiss Point Raiders middle school football team played there spring football on May 19th versus Landrum Middle School. The team lost in the final minutes 3-0. SPMS Golf TeamThe Golf Team's record will be announced in the next Raider Rap. SJMSAA Boys Baseball
The Switzerland Point Raiders middle school baseball team finished the regular season 14-2 en route to winning their first St. Johns County Middle School baseball title. Luis Torres pitched a shutout in a 11-0 win over Gamble Rogers in the semifinals. Jarred Davenport followed that with a shutout of his own in a 7-0 victory over Landrum Middle School in the finals.
