Grades being updated in Parent Assist

In an effort to help parents know when grades will be updated and to give teachers time to grade, we will have grades updated on three dates throughout the quarter.

February 6th

February 27th

March 19th

Please check parent assist on these days for the most accurate grades.  Please contact the teacher first if you have any questions regarding grades.

Expectation Assemblies

All students attended expectation assemblies this past week to review school rules and behavior expectations.  Since we are in the 2nd semester ALL demerits from 1st semester have been erased and students start over.  We hope by now that they have learned what is expected.  The 2nd semester reward trip is a larger field trip to a theme park.  If a student serves In-School Detention (ISD) or Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) this semester, he is ineligible to attend the reward trip.  Please talk to your student about behaving appropriately at school.

Dress Code Reminders

Please talk to your child about dressing appropriately for school.  We are not trying to pass judgement on outfits worn.  Most of them are very cute and are appropriate for the movies, the mall, etc, just not for school.  We are here to focus on academics and do not need any additional distractions.

The following items are not appropriate for school.....

-yoga pants

-low shirts that expose cleavage

-shorts or skirts that are shorter than 4" above the knee

-mesh or see through shirts with a tank underneath (the tank can be seen)

-shirts with wide cut necks that hang off a shoulder with a tank underneath

-sleeveless shirts or tank tops

-backless shoes

Reporting Incidents

During every expectation assemby we encourage students to report incidents that occur to Dean Hurst.  We tell students that reporting a student who is picking on someone or reporting an incident is not tattling.  By reporting, they are keeping Swiss Point a safe school.

Backpacks

Students have been reminded again that only drawstring or small backpacks can be carried to class.  This bag is not supposed to be used to carry books and notebooks.  It should be used to carry supplies such as pencils, pens, calculator, notecards, highlighters, etc.  Books and notebooks should be carried using their hands and arms.  All of the schools in the north end of the county have this rule.  Our hallways are just too crowded for large backpacks and our rooms are not large enough to have large backpacks sitting in the aisles blocking movement.  Students are allowed to visit lockers several times during the day.  The most we are asking them to carry is books and notebooks for 2 classes.  If a student carries a backpack to class that is not allowed, he/she will be sent to their locker to put it up and will be marked tardy to class.  The consequence for 4 tardies to a class is one day of ISD.

Keep hands and feet to yourself!

Adults in our building say this constantly.  Most incidents occur because someone was touching someone or something that did not belong to them.  Please talk to your child about keeping their hands and feet to themselves.  All horseplay that results in an injury is an automatic suspension.

Electronic Waiver Form

On Monday in study hall each student will be given another copy of the electronic waiver form to be completed.  A student must have a completed waiver form to use a Nook, Kindle, IPad or other eReader at school or to bring a laptop.  Since many of our students have received these items as gifts over the holidays, we need to ensure that the form is on file.  Ipods are NOT allowed at school.

Attention 8th grade parents!

On Thursday, our 8th graders attended High School Blitz at the World Golf Village to learn more about the various academies offered at all of our St. Johns County high schools. Parents were also invited to attend the High School Showcase that evening. Parents and students were able to meet teachers and other students representing these programs and were also able to receive information on programs of interest. .Online Academy Registration opened Friday (Jan. 27th), so your 8th grader may now choose to apply for an academy! The academy registration deadline is Feb. 13th. St. Johns District Schools offers a variety of Programs of Study and Career Academy options. Students can prepare for further education in academic and career areas which require post-secondary education at a college, university, community college or technical institute, and in career areas which are open for immediate employment upon graduation. Academy students can earn free college credit through dual enrollment or by earning industry certifications which may articulate to college credits. Please take the time to visit the academy website (click here to viewto explore the exceptional programs that St. Johns County has to offer. Parents and students may also attend the Academy Night offered at each high school if they would like to meet the teachers and get more information on particular academies of interest. Students Who Failed a Class for the First Semester

A letter was mailed home this week with information for parents regarding opportunities to recover an "F" on the report card using Florida Virtual School. Any parent making the decision to register a student to take a semester of World History (6th grade) or Civics (7th grade) needs to register for m/j World Cultures (6th grade) or m/j World Geography (7th grade). We will accept the semester of either class for grade forgiveness since FLVS does not offer m/j World History or m/j Civics. Please contact your child's guidance counselor.

SJMSAA Soccer News:

A Message from the Girls Soccer Coach

Congratulations on a great season!  Here are the final results.  We placed third out of nine middle schools.  Our record for the season was 6-4-1.  The girls scored a total of 47 goals and had 10 goals scored against them.  We had 17 girls out of 22 total players score at least 1 goal for our team.  We had 12 girls with at least 1 assist.

One of the best parts of this past season was when the sixth graders scored their first goals while playing on the big field.  The look on their faces was priceless.

The girls played an outstanding game against Landrum in the semifinal game but we were not able to find the back of the net.  We lost that game 1-0.  We had constant pressure on Landrum throughout the first half.  We were all tied at 0-0.  We came out a little flat in the second half and a miscommunication causes a goal to be scored against us at about 10 minutes into the second half.  We did not give up after that goal was scored on us.  We woke up and started playing like the first half and almost scored in the last 5 minutes of the game but were unsuccessful.  Unfortunately Natalie and Nicole both rolled their ankles with about 12 minutes to go in the second half.  They are okay.  The girls gave their best effort and left it all out on the field.

On behalf of Coach Dustin Siple and myself I would like to say that the girls were great and it was a pleasure to coach them this season.

Our leading scorer for this season was Savannah O'steen with 13 goals.  Here is a breakdown of the players that scored;

Local Pediatric Dentist Leads "Give Kids A Smile" in St.Augustine, Florida: Practice Provides Free Oral Health Care to Underserved Children

As part of the American Dental Association's Give Kids A Smile Day (GKAS), St. Augustine area Pediatric Dentist Dr.Matthew McLellan leads a group of volunteer dental professionals to provide a day of free care to underserved children. Each year, the Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program successfully treats more than half a million kids at approximately 2,000 locations nationwide.

Dr. Matt and the other volunteer dental professionals will provide free oral exams, cleanings, x-rays and fluoride treatments to underserved children ages 5 to 12 years old at 1100-2 S. Ponce de Leon Blvd. on Friday February 3rd 2012. from 9 am to 2pm.

Dr Matt arranged the logistics and volunteer assignments to ensure that the children in the immediate area received needed dental care on this special day.

Nearly one in four children, aged two to eleven years old has untreated cavities in their baby teeth, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Give Kids A Smile is held annually to:

  • Provide free dental services to local, qualifying children from underserved families
  • Raise awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease occurring here and across the country and
  • Raise awareness of the need to build local public and private partnerships to increase access to oral health care to solve this crisis.

Parents of prospective patients can contact the office at 904-829-9399 ext 102 or click here to email AnnMarie or click here to email Colleen.
