Message from Mrs. Kunze
We are constantly telling students to keep your hands to yourself. We have suspended four students this week for punching another student. We did NOT have 4 big fights, instead 4 boys got mad or irritated at someone and punched them. Students need to think about the consequence of being suspended before they react. Tell an adult if someone is bothering you - don't handle the situation yourself.
The end of the day is very hectic for us. If you need to check your son or daughter out, you must do so at least 30mins before the end of the day. We can not check students out after 1:30pm M,T,Th,F and 12:30pm on W. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Swiss Point will have a Yankee Candle Fundraiser this month to raise money for technology needs. We will have kickoff assemblies during study hall....

Volunteer Designation
Many volunteers from the elementary schools, whose children are now in 6th grade are very enthusiastic about volunteering at SPMS (and it is appreciated!). SPMS is probably not indicated on the approved volunteer file as a facility where the volunteer would like to donate time and must be added before volunteering. Please email Mrs. Casper at casperc@stjohns.k12.fl.us to have SPMS added to your volunteer file. Thank you.
HELLO PARENTS: WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A GENEROUS PARENT TO HELP US OUT AS A VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR - Anyone who is interested PLEASE contact Kathleen Roberts at 547-8650.

- 4:39 Principal Update: Lisa Kunze
- SPMS student count is 962, which is up from projections. Therefore, an associate teacher position has been added to be hired in the coming weeks. A request has also been submitted to add an ESE teacher.
- Town hall meetings are being held concerning rezoning of FCMS/SPMS and DCE/HCE. Many parents are displeased with the potential for rezoning and expressing their concerns vocally within the community. FCMS student count is 1450; SPMS student count is 962. Rezoning is inevitable based on school populations. SPMS currently sits with 5 empty classrooms and no portables. Spread a positive perspective on rezoning within the community, and speak highly of SPMS to ease tensions concerning rezoning.
- Teacher evaluations have changed at the state level. St. Johns County is using an evaluation tool based on research from R. Marzano. By 2014-2015 school year, teachers' pay will be based on evaluations and student performance, as measured by End of Course Exams administered for all students. These changes are resulting in a revitalized focus on standards-based instruction. Parents and community members should be attentive to new classroom procedures and a focus on learning goals and mastery teaching or grading. While different teachers are choosing to implement new teaching/grading methods at different depths, all SPMS teachers have committed to making zeros recoverable, having only standards-based extra credit opportunities, and consistent discipline for academic integrity for the 2011-2012 school year.

Guidance News | Guidance Counselors
Ellen Dail - 6th grade & 7th grade A-L
Tanya Moseley - 7th grade M-Z & 8th grade
Teaching our Children Leadership
The St Johns County School Counselor Professional Learning Community's October Discussion was on Leadership.
Counselors across the district read books that are age appropriate for each of their students' age group: The Leader in Me by Stephen Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens or The 7 Habits of Happy Children , both by Sean Covey.
These books are full of "hands on" ideas for students to develop critical thinking skills, self awareness, empathy, and resourcefulness all in the context of what being a Leader really means.
As school counselors we look for opportunities to grow these skills in our students and even though our rare and short time in the classroom is a luxury - especially at the middle and high school levels - we can use the suggestions these books offer in our discussions with students, parents and teachers.
Leadership needs to be purposefully taught, for children do not truly understand what it encompasses. All adults would do well in "fine tuning" their vocabulary in order to teach this very important concept to their children, friends and students and reading these books is an easy and enjoyable method of doing it.
November's professional reading for school counselors will be on Your Defiant Child - 8 Steps to better Behavior by Russell A. Barkley and Christine Benton, a book about parenting.
Tutoring List
Is your child in need of extra help? If you would like a copy of tutors in our area please have your child come to the guidance office or email Mrs. Moseley or Mrs. Dail. Tutors work with your child for a fee after school and are available for different subject areas.
Parent Assist and Teacher Class Pages
It is the parent's responsibility to be aware of their child's grades on an ongoing basis by going on the Parent Assist account. If you do not have your password, you must send in a copy of your drivers license and a signed parent waiver (you can download it from our website) with your child to Ms. Miller in Guidance. If you have a question about an assignment, please check your child's planner and/or go to the teacher's class webpage on our website, with your child present, to try to find the answer. If you still have a question then email the teacher.
Attention parents of 8th grade Algebra and Geometry students!!
Your 8th grade child is being given the opportunity to take the PSAT at Switzerland Point on Saturday, October 15th from 8am to 11am. This is a national test day for the PSAT and there is not a make-up date. The cost is $20. The PSAT gives your child personalized feedback on their test performance allowing them to see which questions they answered incorrectly and which academic skills they may need to improve. The PSAT is excellent practice for the SAT which your child will take in high school. Payment (cash or check payable to SPMS) for the PSAT should be turned in to Guidance this week. The last day for payment is Friday, October 14th. Your child will receive a receipt. A parent info letter and PSAT Study Guide was given to your student last week by Mrs. Robbins. Please email Mrs. Moseley if you have further questions. |
