Message from Mrs. Kunze

It is hard to believe that the last week of school is here!  We have had a great year at Swiss Point and want to thank all of the parents for their continued involvement, which makes Swiss Point such an amazing school.

We have many activities this week.  Your student was given a green sheet for the last 8 days of school with everything listed.  If he/she has misplaced this, you can print a new copy from our website.  A brief overview is below..

Monday, June 6th

6th & 7th graders attend all classes.  ALL students need to clean out their lockers.  This is the LAST day that students can bring a backpack to school!  Textbooks will be turned in.  PLEASE bring any textbooks that you have at home.

8th graders have Awards Ceremony at 10am at Bartram Trail HS in the auditorium.  Their dance is from 6-9pm at the St. Johns County Convention Center which is connected to the Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village.

Tuesday, June 7th

6th & 7th graders have field trips.

6th graders are meeting BEHIND Swiss Point.

7th graders are meeting down the road from us at Cross Creek Church.

8th graders have their yearbook signing & relay races

Wednesday, June 8th

6th & 7th graders have their Awards Program, Yearbook signing & relay races.

8th graders have their field trip.  The are meeting BEHIND Swiss Point.

Thursday, June 9th

All students will attend every class.  1pm dismissal

Students will be given report cards & summer reading assignments.

Library Fines

We have MANY students who owe library fines for overdue books or owe for a lost or damaged book.  Students will NOT receive their yearbook until fines are cleared.  Students who owe will NOT be allowed to participate in the fun day activities.  PLEASE have your child clear his debts.

FCAT Scores

The FCAT scores will be available online to principals this Monday morning.  Teachers will be given scores to share with students on Monday.  I do not know when the scores will be available on Parent Assistant or when paper copies for students & parents will be delivered.  We will share information as soon as we know.

74 station computer lab

We are trying to raise funds to install a 74 station computer lab for next year.  The cost is $28,000 and we have $21,900.  We are in need of $6,100.  The PTSO is hosting a Gold & Silver Party next week on Tuesday & Wednesday to help raise funds.  We are also accepting donations in any amount from any family or business who can donate.  Checks need to be made payable to Swiss Point Middle School.  Please mail your check or send in with your child,  Attention:  Computer lab

We are adding the new computer lab to prepare for all of the required computer-based testing, but also to allow rising 8th graders the opportunity to take HOPE online next year here during the school day instead of PE.  HOPE (Health Opportunities through Physical Education) is required for high school graduation.  If this course is taken online, then students will have an extra period at Bartram their 9th grade year to take something else.

Tdap - REQUIRED for rising 7th graders!

We currently have 280 6th graders, upcoming 7th graders, that do not have their Tdap for 7th grade.

Please don't delay on getting your student ready for 7th grade!  Students will NOT be allowed to attend class in the fall until we have proof of this vaccination.

Summer Reading

Students will be given a sheet regarding summer reading on the last day of school.  We are allowing total choice this year on books to read.  The reading requirement is to read a minimum number of pages per grade level & to complete a book report on the book or books read.

rising 7th grade - 350 pages

rising 8th grade - 450 pages

Book report forms & the information sheet that your child will recieve on Thursday will be posted on our website this week.

Wow! We are so proud of our students for having made our paper recycling program a success this year. During the summer please save all paper at home so your child can bring it to school when school starts in August. All homerooms have paper recycling containers that get emptied often. The following paper items can be recycled: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, direct mail, office paper, school paper and shredded paper in clear plastic bags

SPMS Sponsors a Dream

The Switzerland Point Middle School Dreams Come True Club, which raises funds for children battling a life-threatening illness, is pleased to announce that we helped make a "dream come true" for a former student, Hannah Lee.  We are thrilled that we were able to contribute $4,000 to Hannah's Hawaiian Dream through our fundraisers.  100% of the money raised goes directly to sponsoring the dream, and we earned funds through selling Krispy Kreme Doughnut Cards and coffee, Domino's Pizza Cards, Dreamsicles, and the Annual SPMS Student Talent Show.  We appreciate the support of our amazing club members and our school community for helping to make this happen!  A special THANK YOU goes to the Publix and Winn Dixie stores located on 210 for their help with our party needs!

Middle School Math

The math curriculum has become much more rigorous.  Algebra 1 now requires students to understand concepts that were not introduced until geometry and Algebra 2 a few  years ago.  Middle school students are capable of understanding these concepts, but often they need more practice and different kinds of practice than older students.

We are offering a "preview" of the more difficult and basic concepts your student will need as he or she advances in math.  We will make sure students have a through understanding of integers, linear equations, inequalities, and graphing .  We also work with students on word problems that require them to apply the concepts.

For students entering or continuing pre-algebra, we will work with problems containing fractions, as well as analyze the individual math issues of each student.

At St. Johns Learning, we work with each student individually, tailoring the instruction and the materials to his or her needs.

Our teachers are certified math teachers and college graduates with degrees in math and engineering.  We use patience and understanding to help students become more confident in their math skills.

One to three hours a week, depending on your child's needs, could make next year's math course much more successful and much less stressful. Our schedules are flexible and we have family pricing available.  We have been serving St. Johns' families since 2005.

Please contact us to discuss your child's needs.
